HIGHWAY ROBBERY-LEARN FROM MY MISTAKE:
Please heed my warning and avoid this company at all costs. Don't be like me and ignore the well-earned one star rating. Hibner only gets a 1-star rating because zero stars is not an option. I will never get back the money that I lost, but I hope I can save someone else.
I scheduled an appointment with Jim (who turns out to be both a technician and also the proprietor of this Ponzi scheme) for 3pm on a Friday. He told me that if he came after 5 pm or during a weekend, it would cost extra for overtime. As a medical resident it can be pretty tough for me to break away from the hospital. A friend of mine was kind enough to leave work early so that she could be there to meet Jim at 3. He, of course, shows up at 5:15pm. He proceeded to spend the next hour discussing his life, his children, his vasectomy, his time in the Air Force, his recent back injury and resultant surgery and hospital stay, and issues with PTSD. Sufficed to say, I got the rundown on Jim and the Hibner family.
A little after 6pm, he takes his first look at my AC unit. After explaining how other companies would try to swindle me by simply adding freon or telling me I needed new parts, he said that my problem is a dirty AC unit, which is a result of the leaves that have built up on my patio.
He then proceeds, without being asked to do so, to start cleaning up said leaves. Using my rake, Jim starts cleaning up my very small patio (appx 10-12 feet wide). At this point I make it home, and help Jim. For the next 30 minutes or so, Jim and I rake leaves and discuss whatever flight-of-ideas topic enters his mind. It was great.
After raking, of course, it's time to hose off my patio, which I do personally, at Jim's instruction. It is now 7pm (2 hours after his arrival, four hours after he is scheduled to be there) and Jim decides to actually work on the AC unit. He sprayed it with chemicals that looked pretty homemade and meth lab-ish. He then rinsed off the unit.
For those still reading and keeping score at home, my AC unit has been sprayed with chemicals and rinsed off, for a total of, eh, 8 minutes of work.
Jim then hits me with the bill: $550! Five hundred and fifty American dollars for 8 minutes of AC cleaning plus an hour of yard work that a) no one asked him to do and b) I helped him with. Throw in another hour or two of story time (which again, no one asked for, trust me) for the grand total.
He was gracious enough to waive the service fee when he saw my soul leave my body after reading the initial bill, so I only had to pay a meager $480. Which is great, since I pretty much live paycheck to paycheck on a resident salary, and had $600 in the bank at the time of this robbery.
I am still in complete disbelief over this whole thing. Jim, of course, was in denial of any 3pm appointment we had. He perseverated about how honest and hardworking he is, and how a lesser repairman would've charged me thousands for the work he did!
Like I said, my money is long gone, but PLEASE don't make the same mistake I did.
