Was a bit surprised by the exhibits here- one on the cultural and political dialogues associated with hoodies, one reimagining birdhouses... it was unusual and there wasn t a lot of information to help connect the viewer to the art/artist vision.

Even better than expected. The exhibits (including when we were there: Dissident Gardens) were all beautifully arranged and everything is nice and spacious. Nice to have a look at the existing bookshop afterwards; many beautiful books! Combination with house Sonneveld is recommended. Parking nearby and indoor catering, so fully equipped.

Many good events and lectures are organised by the Instituut, however if you are looking for a nice exhibit of Dutch architecture that is NOT the place to go to. Exhibitions are pretty small and the best one was not relevant at all, though pretty good. 4 out of 5 for events and 3/5 for the displays.

The place is fantastic and worth spending if only to see the building.

The permanent exhibition gives a complete and entertaining vision of the history of architecture in the Netherlands.

The ticket entitles you to visit the magnificent Sonneveld House.

During my visit I found this place to be bland and unsure of itself mostly. The building itself is beautiful but all the exhibitions I saw were discreet and dull. However you do however get free entry to Sonneveld House (a wonderful modernist building next door) with your ticket and that is one of Rotterdam's treasures. A must-see. Only visit Het Nieuwe Institut if you have done everything else you want to do in Rotterdam.

Their exhibitions are experimental, bold, creative, expansive and with many profound meanings. I couldn't agree more to the use of the word "Institute" instead of "Museum". I'd be so proud of this place if I had been living in Rotterdam.

I visited the exhibition 'Steve Bannon, a propaganda retroperspective'. Very interesting but not very accessible, partly because of explanations with long and unnecessarily complicated sentences. Furthermore, every exhibition on the 3rd floor is unfortunately a torture for people with a fear of heights. You walk over grids so you can / have to look down meters. Architecturally sound but quite worthless from a user perspective! :(

One of the best museums in the Netherlands and a must-see for lovers of design, architecture and avant-garde. The programming is of rare relevance and always offers questions and points of view both on what our current society is and on what it could become.
The building is superb, the exhibitions, as much for their content as their staging, are excellent and always very well explained although experimental, and easy to access to a large audience, if tempted that we take the time to read a little. I go back there as soon as a new exhibition opens.

Unfortunately, the entire standard collection is not there. We came for architecture, there is currently only fashion. I did not find it clearly stated on the site that there is nothing of the new institute.

I wanted to see the exhibition about van Doesburg. It turned out to be in the basement and only accessible from the back because another hall was still under construction. The bookshop turned out to be closed for the whole day an hour later. And I also thought it was a bit messy. But nice people who help you and kindly show you the way. Nice terrace. Reasonable cappuccino in a paper cup. So all in all it was not such a bad visit at all. The Doesburg exhibition was worthwhile. There weren't that many visitors yet.

About Het Nieuwe Instituut

Het Nieuwe Instituut: Mapping and Visualizing the Rapidly Changing World

In today's world, we are witnessing radical technological, economic, cultural, and social changes that are transforming our lives in unprecedented ways. Keeping up with these changes can be a daunting task for many of us. However, Het Nieuwe Instituut is a Dutch-based organization that aims to map and visualize these rapid changes while promoting discussions on design-related topics.

Het Nieuwe Instituut was established in 2013 as a merger between three Dutch institutions: the Netherlands Architecture Institute (NAI), Premsela – the Netherlands Institute for Design and Fashion, and Virtueel Platform – the e-culture knowledge institute. The organization is located in Rotterdam's Museumpark district and has become one of the leading institutions in Europe dedicated to architecture, design, digital culture, and urban planning.

The primary objective of Het Nieuwe Instituut is to explore how design shapes our world by examining its impact on society at large. The organization achieves this goal through various activities such as exhibitions, research projects, lectures series', publications as well as educational programs.

One of Het Nieuwe Instituut's most significant achievements is its extensive collection of archives related to architecture and design history from the Netherlands dating back over 100 years. This archive includes drawings from architects such as Gerrit Rietveld or J.J.P Oud; photographs by Cas Oorthuys or Ed van der Elsken; posters by Wim Crouwel or Anthon Beeke; furniture designs by Martin Visser or Gerrit Th. Rietveld; fashion designs by Viktor & Rolf or Iris van Herpen among others.

Moreover, Het Nieuwe Instituut has an impressive track record when it comes to organizing exhibitions that showcase contemporary art installations related to architecture and design themes. For instance,"Architecture of Appropriation" exhibition explored how architects have used existing buildings' structures rather than designing new ones from scratch while "The Hoodie" exhibition examined how this garment became an icon for youth culture worldwide.

Another essential aspect of Het Nieuwe Institut's work is research projects aimed at exploring emerging trends in architecture and urban planning fields while also addressing societal challenges such as climate change or social inequality issues. For example," Automated Landscapes" project investigated how automation technologies could transform urban landscapes' appearance while "Designing Democracy" project explored how designers could contribute towards creating more inclusive democratic processes.

In addition to exhibitions and research projects,Het Nieuwe Institut organizes lecture series featuring prominent speakers from various fields related to architecture, digital culture, and urban planning.Their educational programs include workshops, symposiums, and masterclasses aimed at providing students with hands-on experience working on real-world problems related to their field.Het nieuwe institut also offers scholarships for talented students who want to pursue careers in these areas but lack financial resources.

Finally,Het nieuwe institut publishes books, journals, and other publications aimed at disseminating knowledge about emerging trends within their field. They also collaborate with other organizations worldwide, such as MoMA New York,Tate Modern London,Pompidou Paris,to name just a few,to promote cross-cultural exchange ideas about contemporary art installations related themes like digital culture, fashion, cinema, music among others.

In conclusion,Het nieuwe institut plays an essential role in mapping out rapidly changing worlds through its various activities. Its extensive collection archives, research projects, live events, and educational programs make it one of Europe's leading institutions dedicated solely towards exploring emerging trends within their field. Moreover,it collaborates with other organizations worldwide promoting cross-cultural exchange ideas about contemporary art installations related themes like digital culture, fashion, cinema, music among others.Hence,it continues shaping our world through innovative approaches towards understanding societal challenges posed by rapid technological, economic, cultural, and social transformations happening around us today!
