A total "your not from around er are you" feeling and attitude, staff were disinterested, rude, intentionally unhelpful and unpleasant. Not welcome or wanted at all. Left without eating and went somewhere else.

Nice place. Food was alright, although not fantastic. Burgers are a good size but the 'well done' steak was overdone. There was a notable wait for the mains, but they seemed fairly busy. The building and gardens are very nice.

The staff worked their socks off to make us feel safe and welcome. They also had to put up with many difficult customers who didn't seem to understand that in order to run the pub safely they couldn't have too many walk-ins or provide normal service as the staff too need to maintain social distancing. My family have nothing but praise for them.

Had a very bad experience here a couple weeks ago on Saturday the 27th.

When we arrived we ordered drinks, my father asked if it was any cheaper to double up on Gin - We were told it was a restaurant not a chain pub (a comment which I would agree with providing the rest of the evening went smoothly). Whilst we were getting drinks we saw someone else send their meal back although I understand it can happen (and we'd walked half an hour to get here, there was no where else)

We sat down and ordered the food, everything my parents wanted was unavailable so my father settled for a rib eye, my mother a steak and myself and my partner burgers.

At the end of the night when we went to pay they tried to charge us for the whole order, we had to inform the waitress (who I very much doubt was not aware of our problem) that we sent it back for her to remove it from the bill.

We ordered another round of drinks whilst we waited for a taxi, we saw the chef come out, I believe he was new as the waitress asked him if he "had got the hang of clocking in and out yet"

Such a shame for such a lovely building, with a nice interior but the meals really let it down, comparable to a chain pub in quality.

I would like to come back again, but I'm not sure whether we would look at the meal.

Returned after a long break due to awful service by last owners. Such a shame that the service is always what let's this place down as it is a beautiful setting and beautiful decor. However when 5+ parties are waiting at the bar for nearly 10 minutes before a member of staff comes to serve, it really takes the shine off. It is not a cheap place, which can be justified when service and experience is on point, but just seems greedy to skimp on staff when it is not. Will hesitate to return when there are many places in the local area with a much better customer experience.

You'd be hard-pressed to find a better place for lunch in North Devon. Fantastic location right on the Tarka Trail, beautiful building, good selection of drinks, wonderful food at reasonable prices friendly staff. There is a large dog friendly garden and a lovely play area for the kids. What more could you ask for !

Has Potential to be Great.

Has Potential to be Great.

Great location and layout. Especially during summer when the view of the estuary really makes a lovely backdrop.

The food and drinks are generic but well made. I've been twice and I can't remember what I had; a true sign of an ok restaurant.
The layout is spaced enough to be intimate and cosy enough to be a family pub or date venue alike.
The only down side is the lack of service. Food is ordered at the bar so it does end up feeling a bit cheap and impersonal.

This page is gorgeous and the food smells great, but we've been waiting for almost an hour to even have our orders taken. In the same time, another (large) group has come in, gotten drinks, ordered food, etc. We came here on a date and I really wanted to like this place due to the pretty decor and lively environment but now I'm just hangry and disappointed. I would definitely give this place another try on a less busy day, but I'm really not very happy right now.

Edit: Amended my review up to 4 stars. Just we we were leaving a very friendly waitress noticed and chased down our food. She was very apologetic and the food itself was lovely. I don't know how we fell through the cracks but in the end, it WAS worth the wait. I don't like to leave a bad review, I just hope that this won't happen again next time we visit.

This place has the wow factor. Fantastic views from the rear sunny garden, and very smart interior design. We've driven past several times when visiting North Devon previously, but this time the sun was out and it looked so inviting, and so glad we gave it a go.

Saw this place on the side of the road whilst driving through and it looked so nice and idyllic that I had to stop off here for food on our way back. Great views over the estuary. We had our dog with us and the staff were really friendly toward us and the pup. Great food choices, good coffee. This isn't your standard "pub", so is a little more expensive but you get a large increase in quality with that making it good value.

I used to live in the area for over ten years and everytime I visited the tarka Inn there was an issue with either service or quality of food so stopped going, stupidly I thought I'd try it again since it has changed its name to Heanton Court and it again was massively under staffed in the hight of the tourist season and people were having to wait 45mins or food.

Lovely pub, something a bit different as it's in the style of a castle. Completely beautiful place I loved it the food was lovely and staff friendly. A beautiful outside seating area as it looks out over the river and has access straight onto the tarka trail for a walk with the dog. The pub is also dog friendly which is lovely for a summers walk along the river and stop for something to eat and a drink in the sun on the terrace. Over all a lovely styled pub , lovely food and staff good size car park and beautiful terrace by the river. Would definitely recommend a visit.

Lovely atmosphere, cant fault the staff, attentive and polite. My only gripe would be the portion sizes for the price you pay. 6 of us booked for lunch time, all had a main meal each, 3 had deserts and we all had 2 non alcoholic drinks More

Beauitful relaxed atmosphere and very friendly staff. Amazing standard food, alot more than your standard 'pub food and not over priced. I chose something off the vegan menu just because it sounded really tasty , which it certainly was. Taste and presentatation 10/10.Will definitely be back soon to explore the menus further. Nice touch it's gone back to its original name as I remember coming here as a kid.

Great food, provided in a beautiful venue with an accompanying beer garden overlooking the estuary. Staff were friendly and accommodating. Unfortunately they had run out of quite a few items on the menu, which has been a common occurrence in other Vintage Inn's I've been to also. Otherwise, good!
