Couldn't fault the service, food was nowhere near the standard I expected.
Roast served at 6.45pm was effectively a re-heat from lunch or just tasted like it and the Butternut curry was pretty dry and lacking in temperature.
If I was looking to go somewhere beautiful for a drink and a view you couldn't go wrong but definitely beware when ordering food.

Absolutly terrible experience here! I am not a person who likes to moan, I try to see more positives then I do negatives but there was nothing good I could say about the new managment, chefs etc, it was better as the 'tarka inn'

The wait was about 45 minutes and when it came out it was burnt and cold!
I demarded to see the manager who said it was himself, I explained i was disapointed with the meal and he went to our table and said 'The fish pie was burnt, Ill give you that!' No sorry, no sincerity about the situation..
we paid for our drinks and left, we have never returned, we do not wish to return.
it was better the traka inn.

Slow service, forgetful staff. Food could be better. We waited over an hour for our food. Our drinks that we ordered from the waitress never materialised. (So we had to go to the bar and order ourselves after a 35 min wait).

When the food finally came, there were discrepancies of what we had been told we could order and what was on the plate. Example: my dad ordered fish and chips and garden peas and instead they brought mushy peas... When he queried it, they offered baked beans!).

When I ordered my food (a standard beef roast) I was told it would come with mash. I thought this was a bit quirky so just went along with it. When it came out there was no mash just a few small roast potatoes instead, they tasted like they had been left over from lunch time unfortunately. For my Sunday roast i was also served a very flat and sad looking Yorkshire pudding. When we were asked if we wanted any sauces I asked for mustard. ...Obviously that never appeared.

Portion size is quite small here, so if you are hungry you may want to look elsewhere (think smaller than London portions). We didn't stay for dessert in the end as it had taken so long to get to the main meal stage.

Went here to try the new valentines menu. It was the first night of the new menu so you'd expect them to be prepared however they were missing parts of the menu one of which being the reasons we wanted to eat there (the new elderberry tart). The waitress just dropped the wine at our table never asked us if we wanted to taste it first or offered to pour. There was bread missing form our starter and when my husband asked for it we were told it didn't come with it. We also ordered one of there berry Ceme brulee and when it arrived we were told it was orange and seeing as how someone prepared it we didn't want to send it back however we wish we had it wasn't very nice. Will not be going back to this restaurant. Having said that parts of our food were very good and we really enjoy there bar food. The staff are usually always happy and friendly. Just think there restaurant management and food ordering need a review

This is a great location with outstanding views. Inside you get comfy armchairs and log fire.

If you go for lunch you will get reasonably good food at quite a high price. It is recommended though that you should not be in a hurry because service it really really slow.

The place looked nice. It was quiet but we're placed in a corner.

My wife's meal was cold. We were never asked whether the food was okay.

There lots things missing off the menu including the roast menu on a Sunday which was half the menu.

Lovely calming atmosphere, fantastic food and very friendly service.

My dog yogi really enjoyed his burger. Its fab that they welcome our furry friends.
We live in Liverpool but come down to meet family, come here every time we visit and enjoy it!

Loving the new decor

Beautiful building, good value food and dog friendly. Visited in November as in a dogs holiday in North Devon, but beautiful outside space that must be lovely to enjoy in the summer. Wide selection of good food, and Suprisingly great value set menu meals, allowing the place to cater for all budgets. Bar staff were friendly, steak was cooked very well and plenty of space inside for the dog. Nice dessert and coffee selection also.

I've visited a few times before and for I always have high hopes, but which sadly are never quite met.

It starts with the large car park and castle like features of the building. The view into the River Taw, especially at sunset, can be really stunning. And that's the very best thing about this restaurant.

The service is fine, but not exceptional, and as is the food. They can't quite get a steak right, which is a fundamental of any restaurant. I also can't quite put my finger on what's exactly wrong with the place. I suppose it's that for the price there are better alternatives in and around Barnstaple that I'd rather visit.

Oh and the Wi-Fi is awful. It's O2 and they ask you to sign up with all manner of personal details. Then they'll send you a code to your phone (which means giving away your number). But this is Devon, and it took until I had already left for the code to come through to let me join the Wi-Fi. Very frustrating and another reason I won't be looking to re-visit.

Next time I'm in the area I'll invariably be attracted to the view and to give the place another try (I hear it changes ownership frequently), but I hope I remember this review and my last visit and opt to try another place.

Arrived at this fantastic looking place which clearly looks to be abit upper class, menus and prices are limited and quite pricey and the food came out warm and cold their condiments are lacking hugely I had some cold chips and warm chips the toilets are miles away not very impressed to say the least came here with family to have a final farewell and a nice meal was let down massively

Nice place. Great views. Not sure about the food, was pretty dry (chkn blt). Could do with some butter on the toasted bread... I guess it caters more for the retired as that was most of the clientele, food menu is as such. Staff were friendly enough.

Wanted to really like this place as the surroundings and very picturesque. However, after a number of the items were missing from the menu, children's size chicken breast the 1/4 of the size you would expect, wine delivered to the table but no glasses (helped ourselves from other table), 20 mins after ordering a glass of wine to be told none left, lamb shank that was more fat than meat, one waitress that was clearly having a bad day with attitude and shockingly bad service (all clearly an effort). All of the above and more, a night I would not want to repeat. On this basis, I can't recommend this place.

Stopped here for dinner.Amazing building with lovely views from the gardens where you can eat admiring the view.
Very dog friendly with water & biscuits for them.
Had the chicken pie which was lovely.
Unfortunately when ordering our sweet,they
brought us something completely different than we ordered.
After half an hour our original order arrived after asking twice where it was!.
Staff very courteous and did apologize for the mistake and time it took.

Infuriating experience: The location of the pub is beautiful, the exterior and interior are both pleasant and the staff we encountered were friendly. However, we waited 45 minutes for two (out of five) people to get their food, then were informed that the rest of us wouldn't get our meals until the first two had finished as they were "technically starters". Even after asking for them all to arrive at the same time - apparently rules are rules.

We left feeling angry and I would never go back out of principle. I'm only giving it two stars because the location was beautiful.

Nice location. Generous portions and reasonable food. Was disappointed that my fish cakes and roasted vegetables consisted of new potatoes and a few peppers. To be fair they changed it, and what I was eventually given was pleasant but by the time my food was returned, my family had finished. Think they were short-staffed.

Arrived for Sunday lunch just before midday and had to wait outside for ten minutes. When we got inside we were told that we would have to wait a while to order food as the kitchen wasn't ready. After 20 minutes or so we asked one of the bar staff if we could order, knowing that others had already done so. She asked someone who seemed to be the manager, who told her - rather rudely - that there was still no point ordering yet as the kitchen still wasn't ready and we'd get our food no quicker. We gave up in the end and went elsewhere. We've been here several times and never had a particularly good experience.

Lovely location, nice atmosphere and lovely staff . As for the food I thought the kids meal was good (pizza and chips) but the steak was extremely tough and no juice in any of them and they were suppose to be medium rare. We are assuming they were put in the oven after they had been cooked which really dried them out. Was a disappointing end meal to our holiday.

Giving 4 stars as opposed to 5 as the food is good but not absolutely amazing... I like lots of gravy which you won't get (hardly any of) unless you ask for it. It's nice but not outstanding. I do however love sitting outside in the Summer when the evenings are light, having a drink and looking out onto the estruery. The view is gorgeous! I recommend this place as an evening pub in the warm weather.

The place presents a peaceful setting with views of the beach right out of the windows. Reasonable prices and decent size portions. The pub looks like a dog friendly place as there was a few when we arrived. The staff seem very friendly but watch out for the waittress who tells you she will be right back but is forgetful and needs reminding that your still there.

Good service, lovely staff, good lay out everything was spot on only negative thing was my onion rings seemed like they weren't crispy or cooked enough, very white instead of golden brown and no crunch, soft and oily could have done with a few more minutes , apart from that lovely place

Very nice atmosphere and friendly staff. Very dog friendly, dogs are allowed anywhere in the bar area, and there is water and biscuits for them. Our dog lived all the fuss she was getting too. The food was excellent, which is a bonus, a little more expensive than other places, but the quality of the food made up for it. I will definitely come back to eat here the next time we are in Devon.

Covid measures good and not intrusive.

Covid measures good and not intrusive.
Staff were 10/10 for service and attitude

Calamari starter tasted good but looked a tad miserly on quantity. However it was just as well - the size of my fish mains meant I couldn't finish the meal, so no complaints overall.
The fish and chips main was tasty and excellently cooked. Best tartare sauce I've had. My wife's prawn cocktail and slow cooked beef was given the thumbs up and she's fussy!

Overall, good value good quality meal with service with a smile.
