Nature right in the city. Multiple interconnecting trails for hiking, biking, skiing, running, etc. Short and long loops, through marshes and forests, past ponds, beautiful vistas, and connecting different neighborhoods. Parking area and outhouse.

Super awesome hiking trails. Highly recommend going to the rock Knob. You get a great view of all of the neature. Only complaint I have is the maps along the trail are kind of confusing to read, but Google Maps does a GREAT job of making out the major trails. I'd suggest using that (we all had great phone reception, which was a big plus as well)

Great area to explore, experiment, and get some healthy exercise for the entire family. The only recommendation I would make is to add some additional signage so you know which direction you should head in when coming out of some of the many trails.

Can't tell you how many great runs and memories I've had in this place throughout college and then some. This is one of my favorite places to go in all of Duluth and it is so beautiful in the fall time.

Great City Park with lots of amenities. They have great winter bike and running trails as well as classic ski trails. In the summer lots of running/hiking/biking trails. They have a pond that has reasonable kid type fishing. They also run day camps, have a preschool and do evening and weekend activities for adults.

I love that there are places in the middle of Duluth, like Hartley, where I can get outside and be in the middle of the woods while also still being in the city. Hartley is gorgeous all season round with things to do like hiking, skiing, snowshoeing, and running. The Nature Center has events, camps and provides a place to go inside if need be. I enjoy coming here often and getting away by myself or connecting with friends.

The nature center has lots of great animals (mostly dead but some living) for kids to see. The preschool is phenomenal and the kids spend all day everyday outdoors! There are lots of hiking and mountain biking trails for adults and little boardwalks to hidden ponds and fallen trees for kids to climb. Hartley is a way to get away from it all but still be in the city!

Hartley is Duluth's Central Park. The park is on the northern end of Woodland Ave...After a drive down a winding, narrow, road you pull into a horseshoe parking lot that leads to the nature-ctr bldg. There are picnic tables outside to enjoy a break after a hike. Several trails for hiking or biking. Going up Hartley Rd will lead you past a boardwalk trail to a dilapidated root cellar..unsafe to enter. Great time by the family. At a large pond there is a place to rent canoes...well worth the hike at the park.

About Hartley Nature Center

Hartley Nature Center: A Haven for Natural History, Stewardship, and Sustainability

Nestled in the heart of Duluth, Minnesota, Hartley Nature Center is a non-profit organization that has been dedicated to promoting environmental education and conservation since 1956. With over 660 acres of pristine forests, wetlands, and meadows at its disposal, the center offers a wide range of programs and activities that cater to people of all ages and backgrounds.

At Hartley Nature Center, natural history takes center stage. The center's mission is to inspire curiosity about the natural world through hands-on experiences that foster a deeper understanding of ecology and biodiversity. Whether you're interested in birdwatching or botany, geology or entomology, there's something for everyone at Hartley.

One of the unique features of Hartley Nature Center is its focus on stewardship. The center believes that it's not enough to simply appreciate nature; we must also take an active role in protecting it. To this end, Hartley offers numerous opportunities for volunteers to get involved in habitat restoration projects such as invasive species removal or trail maintenance.

Sustainability is another core value at Hartley Nature Center. The organization recognizes that our actions have consequences for the environment and seeks to promote sustainable practices both within its own operations as well as throughout the community. From composting toilets to solar panels on its buildings, Hartley strives to be a model for sustainable living.

Visitors can explore the many trails that wind through the woods and along Amity Creek while taking advantage of interpretive signage along the way. There are also several picnic areas available where visitors can enjoy lunch while taking in views of Lake Superior from afar.

For those looking for more structured programming options there are plenty available year-round including summer camps for kids ages 3-15 years old which offer everything from outdoor exploration activities like hiking & canoeing trips down nearby rivers; winter snowshoe hikes with hot cocoa breaks; spring wildflower walks led by expert naturalists who share their knowledge about local flora & fauna; fall bird migration watching events where participants learn how birds navigate long distances during their annual migrations southward towards warmer climates!

In addition to these seasonal offerings there are also ongoing classes offered throughout each season such as yoga classes held outdoors during summer months or indoor workshops focused on topics like beekeeping or mushroom identification during colder months when outdoor activities may be limited due weather conditions.

Hartley Nature Center has become an important resource not only for residents but also visitors from around Minnesota who come seeking refuge from urban life amidst beautiful surroundings rich with wildlife diversity waiting just outside city limits!
