Looking to take the leap to your next career as a developer. HackerYou has enabled me to work with some of the best companies and most amazing people. I am continually amazed by how much I love my day to day since taking the leap. It's totally worth it.
Almost 4 years later, I can still say it was the best investment I have ever made for myself.

I'm just finishing up the part-time advanced web-dev course, after having finished the corresponding intro course. I took these courses because I felt I needed to learn a bit more in preparation for applying to the bootcamp. And wow, am I glad I did! Not only did I get accepted into the bootcamp, but haven taken the intro course is definitely helping me get the most out of it. In fact, I can t imaging going through the bootcamp without having taken the part-time course first. Taking it cemented the idea that this is the place for me. This school has such an amazing community, and is the most inclusive to differences that I have experienced. I have never learned so much so fast in my life; they have their teaching-methods down to an art. It comes down to this: I feel challenged, supported, and welcomed here. I also feel that with the help of HackerYou, I will get where I want to be.
I took the part-time web dev course, and then the bootcamp early to mid-2016.
The school has the most beautiful south-facing window with lots of sunlight where I liked to spend a lot of my time during the course - or if you need someplace with less glare, there are large rooms on the north part of the building.
The instructors were all amazing. They showed me how I could make lots of cool things (that people will pay good money for), AND they did it in a way that showed how down-to-earth people often are in the industry.
Since I left HY, I've been working at carpages.ca (it's been half a year this week!) - and so far it's been one of the best (if not, THE best) work experience of my life.
Applying for the HackerYou part-time web development course was one of the best decisions I made this year. Prior to taking this course I was learning on my own through various online resources where some were great and others not so much. I had started to take these online courses because I wanted to get a taste of what web development was like and see if I could make a career change into becoming a developer. I had learned a lot and even applied to the HackerYou bootcamp but my foundation was not fully there and didn t get in. Sarah (the HackerYou Admissions Manager) was the point person who I corresponded with who encouraged me to take the part-time web dev course to build a stronger foundation.
After taking the course I can definitely say that I had a learning experience that I could not have reproduced learning on my own. Tom, our instructor, was a great teacher who kept us engaged with his positive attitude, humour and immersive material. The lessons were broken up into learnable chunks with helpful code alongs we did as a class and with teaching assistants that were there to help us. Throughout the course we worked on 3 projects where we had to make a website. There was a lot of trial and error making the sites but the lessons provided a good foundation to work off of. There were a lot of helpful tips and tricks I learned as well like focusing on accessibility, best practices and current trends. Overall, taking this course was definitely an investment of time and money but I would say it was well worth it!
I took the Fall Javascript course and it was a great course. The instructors were very approachable. The pace of the course was also good. We got time to understand and consume information and also apply it with codealongs. Yes, the codealongs were very helpful as I was able to implement what we learnt! Not to forget the mentors in the class were amazing too. For the part time course there were office hours twice(which happened on Sunday afternoons) and was very helpful. The mentors are available and can help you out with any project or course related questions! I would recommend this course to anyone who wants to learn basics of Javascripts, jQuery and React.
I had a really great learning experience here. I was a bit intimidated to learn coding, but the instructor (Jenny) started at the very beginning and laid a good foundation so everything afterwards seemed simple. That's a big challenge I've had with self-learning code in the past: it's hard to know where exactly to start, so I've always jumped in at a relatively advanced level and had no idea what was going on.
The coursework was well-paced by stimulating. You learn basically everything you need to know about building a simple website in Intro To Web Development. There's lots of homework too, so you can reinforce your classroom learning on your own time.
Juno is a very conveniently located campus, and has a very young, friendly staff. There was some confusion about a mac rental at the start of my course that could have been handled better, but that's my only complaint.
I went into HackerYou not knowing what it was going to be like. As a complete newbie to the web development, I learned more than I can imagine. I tried learning online on my own but like most people, it just wasn't fun and enjoying. Now I have just finished the Part-Time Web Development Course and I don't regret it one bit. I met new friends and learned HTML5/CSS3/JQUERY at a high level. The instructor and mentors were amazing and I couldn't have done it without their help. One thing I could mention is that I wish we had more outside the box assignments such as the flip-card. I really enjoyed the level of difficulty on those.
When I decided it was time to make a career change I started searching for a coding school, and there are plenty. When it came to HackerYou alumni the reviews had something in common: how their experience were amazing in class and beyond that.
Having finished their Web Development Fundamentals course I can now say that myself.
Not only the course is structured in a way that you learn A LOT without even realizing, but every single HackerYour team member is an amazing professional that loves what they do, and it reflects on their work. Classes were never boring, it never felt like a chore, it didn't even looked like I was about to spend the majority of my Sunday studying! I was excited about what new amazing things we'd learn that day. Everybody was. HackerYou creates a sense of community, where people from the most diverse backgrounds can feel valued for what they can bring to the table, and what they can learn from one another. Our instructor (Jazz) and our mentors (Allison and Meagan) were always friendly and approachable, no questions left unanswered.
If you want to start coding but don't know how to start, or already have a basic knowledge but want to step up your skills, this is the course for you. If you work with devs and want to be able to communicate with them better, this is the course for you. If you are thinking about changing your career but don't want to make the big jump yet, you guessed it right, this is the course for you! Now I know for certain that I want to go down this yellow brick road. I'm still impressed by how much I've learned in class!
This course is good even if you have 0 knowledge about HTML and CSS, and I mean it. Don't feel discouraged if you barely know how to turn your computer on, in a matter of weeks you'll have a new set of impressive skills!
My coding journey with HackerYou began when I enrolled in their Spring 2014 Part-Time Web Development courses. Before attending HackerYou, I had spent many hours assessing other courses and bootcamps in the city. Although they all seemed qualified in their own right, I decided HackerYou was the best fit for what I wanted out of my education and career.
After I took HackerYou's part-time web development course, I had such an amazing experience with the staff and instruction that I ended up taking their Fall 2014 Part-Time JavaScript & jQuery, Spring 2015 Part-time Design and Fall 2015 Full-time Web Development Immersive courses. I'm so grateful I made the decision to study with HackerYou and my return on investment was immediate.
Here's what helped me decide HackerYou was for me:
The Community: I can't say enough good things about this phenomenal community! I know it sounds a little cheesy, but the genuine sincerity and friendliness of students here has had a direct impact on the betterment of my life. Graduates of the bootcamp immersive can still keep in touch with each other by messaging or slinging memes on Slack with previous alumni. Every Friday during a bootcamp cohort, there's "Show And Tell" which allows students the opportunity to practise their presentation and public speaking skills. They also invite alumni to attend which gives them the chance to learn something new and to stay connected to the community.
The Learning Space: HackerYou's learning environment is bright, modern and spacious. The classrooms are set up with a projector at the front where the instructor lectures, and are always kept tidy and clean. There's a good amount of work space; meeting rooms, tables, couches for students to socialize or cozy up in a corner nook for some head-down coding time. They are also pet-friendly and in my opinion, their relaxed, casual, social learning environment is hard to beat. When a course's end is near, they hold a "Demo Night" event and invite the public, who get to see what projects students built during their time there.
The Instructors: This is what sold it for me. I noticed a huge difference in teaching quality while sitting in at other bootcamps. HackerYou definitely has exceptional teaching staff. They have a knack for explaining things in simple terms, but keep the lessons engaging and fun. Their enthusiasm is contagious and a beginner's question is never stupid or ignored. You'll never get an instructor patronizing you or putting you down. All the instructors I've taken classes with, had a great sense of humour, and care deeply about their student's learning and well-being. I've even seen them explain a concept multiple times in different ways until a student gets an "ah-ha!" moment.
HackerYou was by far the best place to take my education to the next level, and I even made some awesome friends along the way!
Having recently finished the HackerYou Web Development Immersive bootcamp, I can genuinely say that it was one of the best decisions of my life to enrol in the program. For a number of years I had thought that web development could be a great career for me, but I was nervous about making the transition from my stable day job. I started by taking the part time Web Development program last spring, which let me dip my feet into the water before investing in the full time program. I was really glad I did as it introduced me to the core concepts of web dev, along with immersing me in the supportive and friendly learning environment that HY has created. After completing the part time course I knew that there was no other school that I would want to attend for a full time program from the high-quality teachers to the environment that supports inclusion and diversity, it was a no brainer for me to apply for the bootcamp at HY. The experience of the bootcamp was definitely intense, but it allowed me to learn current languages and skills that are wanted by employers (React, JavaScript, SASS, etc) in a time period that minimized how long I was out of work. On top of this, having never been a person who enjoyed traditional school, the project-based strategy that focuses on learning by doing really worked for me. One month after completing the program, I just landed by first job as a Front End Developer and I know that I wouldn t have been able to get to this point without HackerYou. I would highly recommend HY to anyone who is curious about web development, or those who are interested in changing their career you won t regret it!
Having worked in eduction and written curriculum in a previous life, I have been impressed with the thoughtful and strategic development and implementation of the course of study. The instructors and mentors are incredibly sharp; the project work is challenging yet interesting; the environment is serious yet relaxed and fun; and the learning space is beautiful and conducive to study. But the highlight has been the community that lasts beyond the completion of a course.
I am two days away from finishing the part-time Web Development (Fall 2017) course and cannot say enough fantastic things about HackerYou. The folks coordinating admissions we always quick to reply to any questions I had prior to the course and were available throughout the course to land a hand.
The space is clean and organized and very bright; a perfect work environment regardless of the time of day.
As for the course itself, I was going in as a complete beginner. I can honestly say that this course taught me so much and has prepared me for the Bootcamp and beyond. I'll be leaving this course with enough knowledge to feel very confident in my skills. The instructors and mentors were unbelievably helpful and knowledgeable. Despite the amount of information I learned, they were patient and made sure we were all confident before moving on.
I can (and happily have) recommended this course to others.
I took the HTML/CSS and JavaScript part-time courses in spring and fall of 2016. The best part of HY are the instructors by far! They're so friendly, funny and awesome! For such a complicated subject matter, they're able to break things down to basics in a way that keeps your ears perked the whole time while also not making you feel like a total dummy. The HY community itself is very infectious. I was drawn in initially because of their commitment to bringing in more women and people of colour in their classes.
At 34 years old I was stuck in a minimum wage job while trying to run my own small business and I wanted to change the direction of where I was going. Next week, I turn 35 and start my first job in the web dev world as a Junior UX Designer/Developer. I have HackerYou to thank for that! Read on if you'd like to learn more about my journey from Barista to Developer:
At the start of 2018, after a lot of self-reflection and thinking about what I would enjoy doing, I decided to look into UX/UI and web development. At first I was interested in taking HackerYou's part-time UX course, so I set up an in-person consultation with Sam, one of the Admissions Coordinators. We had a great chat, but the UX course was geared towards those who had some experience in the industry/with coding, so he recommended me start with the part-time Web Development course to see if it was something I'd like and be interested in pursuing. Well, I loved it. After that course, I took the part-time JavaScript. I think my instructors Kristen (web dev) and Tiff (JavaScript) had a huge impact on how much I enjoyed learning at HackerYou. I decided to take the next step, applied for bootcamp and got my acceptance letter in June 2018.
You can find the current bootcamp curriculum on HackerYou's site as it changes to keep up-to-date with the ever-changing industry, but in my cohort (Summer 2018), we spent the first couple of weeks revising HTML5 and CSS3, then the bulk of the course focussed on JavaScript, jQuery, React, Firebase, Git and Github. Weekly projects made sure we were practising and using everything we were covering and it also helped with learning how to prioritise our time and work in pairs and groups. The instructor to student ratio was great, so you could quickly ask for help and feedback. By the end of the bootcamp, you will be ready to job hunt with a portfolio site!
What can't be beat is the HackerYou community. I've met the most amazing people in my cohort and made lifelong friends. Everyone had their own origin story and that made it even more interesting and encouraging. There is also so much support in all aspects of the bootcamp. The instructors and staff are all friendly and helpful and they really want their students to succeed. Heather, the CEO worked with us one-on-one after the bootcamp and gave us feedback and advice for our job-hunt. I got my first offer within a month of graduating, and I'm stoked to have had this opportunity.
If you are thinking of a career-change and like learning in a classroom surrounded by amazing students and staff then don't hesitate to choose HackerYou. Set up a consultation, get a feel for the environment and programs, and change your life :)
Having no prior coding experience, HackerYou provided a great foundational skill set to get started in Web Development. The instructors were great and provide a lot of support and bring a lot of industry experience to the classes. Would highly recommend!
I m just finishing up taking the Part-Time Web Development course (Spring 2018) and it s been an amazing experience that has given me a really solid foundation of web dev knowledge and skills. I initially started the course to develop my interactive skills as a designer, but I've enjoyed it so much that I m continuing with the part-time JavaScript course and planning on taking the full-time bootcamp to make a switch to web development as a full-time career.
Highly Recommended, no other school would top this. Absolutely, the best place for Web Development. I really enjoyed the course, and all the instructors are supportive and always there to help. Main thing I loved was that you had 12 weeks and 6 hours each week. It is important that you do a lot.
As a recent grad of a web design and development course I quickly realized I needed more skill sets in the industry. With a strong focus on HTML/CSS where I was really lacking was JavaScript.
The accelerated Java Script course was well organized with emails provided a week in advanced for requirements needed for the course. The course is detailed, modern and up to date with industry standards.
The lessons, exercises and code alongs, were detailed, and continued access to course content to look back on is accessible and well written for step by step solutions.
The teachers were great and so were the mentors - any issues and help was provided right away.
This review is for the part-time Intro and Advanced Web Development course. This is a great package of courses for those who are new to coding! For some background, I have little to no prior coding experience and found these courses to be pretty fast-paced, but not unreasonable. You learn a lot in a short amount of time and should be able to create some advanced web layouts by the end. Tom is an excellent instructor and did a great job at conveying the information to students, while simultaneously fending off the constant heckling by one student. My biggest complaint is that each course only has 1 day of office hours which is simply not enough. For the premium price we pay (and it s increasing btw) there should be at minimum two days of office hours per course. It also takes a while to receive feedback on projects which makes it hard to start on the next project when you don t have any feedback on the previous project. The last issue I see is a clear lack of room in the building to accompany all the students trying to study. Basically, if you re not in the bootcamp, you don t have a place to study. Overall, I enjoyed the course and learned a lot! Thank you to all the mentors and Tom for doing such an excellent job!
Following is my review of the Web Development fundamentals and Advanced course; The content is fun and clear and the level of progression in the assignments is perfect. It also helps that Tom is a great instructor and makes the lectures fun. The mentors also have been very helpful during class and even off-hours.
I chose to do this course because I knew I wanted to apply to the Bootcamp (aka Web Development Immersive) but needed a little bit of knowledge in basic HTML and CSS. The admissions coordinator helped me realize that the application to the Bootcamp is competitive which also also solidified my decision to do the part-time course.
Overall, I think this course is a perfect place to start whether you want a career in Web Development but have little to no experience (like myself) or if you just want to learn a new fun skill. Also, HackerYou seems like a great community and I look forward to continuing my education here!
I took the Intro and Advanced UX courses at HackerYou and absolutely loved them! I finally feel like I found something that incorporates all of my interests: writing, psychology, visual design, interviewing, etc. Ricardo is quite simply THE BEST instructor I have ever had. He really made it worth coming to class after working a full day. Linn and Winter were also amazing mentors! All three of them are incredibly knowledgeable, supportive, approachable and fun to be around. Highly recommend these courses!
Took the JavaScript course (Winter 18) with Tiff. I love HackerYou ! Why? - Because the course curriculum is up to date. - Because the instructors and mentors are very knowledgeable and they sincerely make sure that you understand the course material completely. You can ask 2002(!) questions and the instructors/mentors would answer each one of them patiently! - The learning is project-based. - The positive vibe at HackerYou makes coding so much fun!
I previously worked in the book publishing industry which I loved, but I knew for a long time that when I was ready for a change that I wanted to work in web development. I knew I wanted to go to HackerYou because I had heard so many good things about the community there, and I really respected the way it had evolved from Ladies Learning Code. I had taken some two-day workshops there and loved the experience. When my family and I decided we were ready for me to take the plunge, I did some more research comparing HY to other bootcamps in Toronto, which only cemented my decision.
The most difficult part about the career change for me was that I have a young family at home. The workload in the bootcamp is very heavy, and I needed a ton of support from my husband and my family in order to be able to tackle it. Outside of class, I needed all my evenings and weekends for homework. The fact that the course is nine weeks long made this achievable for all of us because there was a light at the end of the tunnel, and not a moment of those nine weeks were wasted which made it all feel worthwhile.
It's amazing how much you can learn in two-months with the right support system. Throughout the course I was really impressed by how much care and attention went into every detail. As we were learning the instructors would make notes as they went. After ever cohort they take weeks to re-evaluate and iterate on the course, and they're constantly updating the curriculum to ensure HY grads are on the cutting edge, so that the class I took was different than the class my friend took a few months before me, and different than the one another friend is taking now. You really have the feeling of being part of a well-oiled machine, but also on the edge of something new.
There are layers and layers of mentorship built in. The staff and instructors and fellow students are all wonderful, but there's also a huge component of alumni mentorship and involvement which I think really speaks to what HackerYou get's right. The students in my cohort came from all different industries and backgrounds, with different strength and challenges, and HY really created an environment in which we all could thrive. We became very close as well.
In addition to the really supportive class environment, there's a support system upon graduation as well. I've never seen anything like the program they have in place to help students get work out of the bootcamp. I was lucky enough to get my dream-job right out of school, thanks to a connection I made in the HackerYou-organized networking event.
And now that HY's been in action for some time, it's getting a reputation built on the quality and success of it's grads. I really felt it opened a lot of doors for me. 10/10. I'd do it again.
At first I was skeptical - after all, I had been studying programming on my own and that had its own benefits. But in the 2-week accelerated web development program at HackerYou, I found out that coding was the easy part. For me, the value of accelerated web dev was in the wealth of experience between the instructors. As someone who was making a career u-turn, I had a lot of questions about workflow, best practices, and professional communication. Shangni, Mark, Tiff and Katie all offered distinct perspectives on working in web development. They were humble, approachable and supportive of my struggle to succeed. The course was a lot of money for me up front, but I would do it again in a heartbeat if I could. These are the kind of people with whom I want to study and work.
Choosing to go to HackerYou was the best decision I had ever made for two main reasons.
First, HackerYou is focused on one thing and that's getting you a job as soon as possible by helping you to master one aspect of web development (Front end) at a time. By doing so, you are able absorb and retain most of the information being presented to you.
The second reason are the people. My initial thought of bootcamp was a competitive and a cut throat environment, but I was wrong. Everyone was super friendly and helpful in helping you to achieve your goals of becoming a front end developer.
I will highly recommend people to check out HackerYou if your main goal is to attain web development job opportunities as soon as possible.
Wonderful people to work with and the students are constantly inspiring with their ability to quickly pick up concepts and create amazing sites! HackerYou is a special place and I'm glad to be a part of it.
I took two part time courses in 2016 - WordPress and jQuery/JS. The instructor was Wes Bos, and his courses were well structured. It provided me with an excellent foundation to build upon. I work as a freelancer and the courses only increased my confidence and ability to create custom solutions for my clients. Highly recommended! (BTW - the mentors we're excellent as well - one of them also reviewed just below: Matt)
I have successfully completed both the part-time Intro to HTML/CSS and full-time Bootcamp program in HackerYou. You're reading this review because you might be on the verge of taking a part-time program (maybe even the full-time program).
Well, here's the short of it: JUST DO IT.
If you were looking for something more, well..
I decided to make a career change from the fitness industry to something else. With a bit of research and "googling", I came to find out about HackerYou. Before fully committing to the Bootcamp program, I decided to take the Intro program first to see if coding was for me. With HackerYou's amazing space and style of teaching, I immediately wanted in into the full-time program.
Community: One thing I loved about HackerYou was the community and the amount of collaboration there was among the students (and even the instructors!). HackerYou has created an environment that allows you to reach your maximum potential when it comes to learning. Everyone just wants to help you out - and you eventually want to start helping everyone out. It's a "we're all in this together" vibe.
Instructors: Heather, the CEO, has been able to acquire the most helpful, caring, and dedicated instructors I've ever met. These group of people just want everything to do with your successes! They are extremely patient and always try to enhance your problem solving skills rather than just giving you the answers.
Space: For the 3 months that I've been there full-time, it just felt like home. HackerYou is super cosy and has all the furniture to get you coding with comfort. Since my cohort, HackerYou has expanded and they're only getting bigger!
Overall experience: It is without a doubt that HackerYou has successfully helped me transition to a new career. Their hands-on approach and 10:1 students to instructor ratio has allowed me to learn enjoyably at ease.
I would highly recommend going to HackerYou to anyone that's looking to advance in their career, learn something new, or even make a career change. They'll take care of you from day 1 of school to your day 1 in your new job!
I have almost completed the part-time Web Development course - Spring 2018, and it is fantastic. I started with an online course, but didn't find that I was getting what I wanted out of it. So I went looking for a classroom-instructed course and a graduate of the HackerYou bootcamp convinced me this was the place.
As a female making a move into the tech realm, I have found HackerYou to be an inclusive and supportive environment. I never feel like there's a stupid question, and the extra support is always right there. I like that there is an instructor with two back-up instructors in every class, so someone is ready to jump in to offer extra help whenever needed.
The volume of what I've learned over the past couple months is far more than I expected. I am excited to be a part of more HackerYou courses in the near future.
I chose HackerYou because of all of the positive reviews online - these reviews are not wrong!
I took the Part Time Web-Dev Fundamentals & am currently in the Advanced portion. I'd suggest taking both of them - the Advanced portion takes everything you learn in Fundamentals so much further and gives you the solid foundation you need to confidently build a website. Prior to taking this course I had virtually no experience in web development, finishing the course, I can build professional sites that you'd actually come across online.
The instructor and mentors are wonderful, they bring their individual experiences to each class and are incredibly knowledgeable. The instructor and mentors use current and relatable examples to get content across. The content and speed of the course are excellent, and every lesson is supplemented with a ton of practical exercises, some that you do in class and others that you can do in your own time.
The projects for the courses are great opportunities to apply everything you've learned and the instructor and mentors are there to guide you and provide constructive one-on-one feedback.
My learning experience at HackerYou was a lot of fun, I love the culture and I would definitely recommend HackerYou to anyone thinking about pursuing Web Development.
I took the Web Development Immersive bootcamp for cohort Fall 2019. I graduated end of December and landed a job as a front-end developer early February. But it wasn't easy and the job hunt was arguably the hardest and most demoralizing aspect of the experience. I worked my BUTT off during the bootcamp but the job search was still rough. The junior dev market is saturated and the competition is nuts. However, the instructors, faculty and alumni were so supportive and helped prepare and push me for that grueling job search. I don't think I would've gotten a job if it weren't for them. Special shoutouts to:
Chi-Chi who was so supportive in both helping me fix my terrible and very long cover letters, practice interviewing and gaining the confidence I needed, and was also there for me when I just needed to vent.
Asaf and Simon were amazing instructors and made every class engaging and full of laughter. Suzette is the sweetest and the way she teaches is so easy to follow. There was never I time I felt too scared to ask a question. I felt like every instructor that taught me genuinely loved teaching and that made those long days (hello React) so much easier. I could go on about the rest of the faculty but I truly think the community Heather is fostering at Juno is amazing and so genuine.
Finishing my part-time web development program at HackerYou- so happy to have enrolled! The coursework was well defined, easy to follow, and sometimes challenging! I have learned SO much from day 1, and loved the casual teaching style. Will definitely be enrolling in another summer program.
I took the full-time web development bootcamp in the spring of 2015, and shortly after began working as a front-end developer for a creative agency in Toronto.
As an introvert, personally, I was looking for an environment where I thought all learning and personality styles were welcomed and fostered. After doing more research, and meeting with Heather Payne (HackerYou's CEO), I felt confident that it was where I wanted to be.
HackerYou is a beautiful space (literally and figuratively). The curriculum is ever-changing because that s the standard in the tech field things are always in flux. As expected in any bootcamp, some days were really tough, but the support from folks in my cohort and the staff helped (and continue to help) me get over all the hurdles. The alumni community is also amazing. People are always there to chime in when you re debugging, or to bounce ideas off of.
Yes, learning how to code is probably the main you re in the bootcamp, but you ll also transform in other areas of your life.
Yes, you ll be able to create webpages and applications, but you'll also be inspired to (and most definitely able to) help others.
At HackerYou it s not just about you, as an individual, coding away (and I don t think it ever has been). It s also about being a part of a thriving and generous community.
Thoroughly enjoyed my time at HackerYou in the part-time web development course. I learned coding in a very welcoming, project-based environment and would recommend the course to anyone interested in web development. There were some topics I wish we could have lingered on a little bit longer, but other than that I give all my praises to this school!
I am just finishing up the Part-Time Web Dev course at HackerYou and I have loved my experience. I originally started looking at HackerYou for their Web Development Bootcamp. Before applying, I heard it was tough to get into the Bootcamp without taking the Part-Time Web Dev course. Even so, I applied with only some quick 2-week self-taught coding knowledge. I didn't pass the tech challenge but was invited to join the part-time course.
In this course, I have become very comfortable with HTML, CSS, and some basic JavaScript. More importantly, the people at HackerYou are wonderful. The mentors are supportive and patient with complete beginners.
After applying to the Bootcamp for the second time, I have now been accepted. If you're looking to eventually join the Bootcamp, the part-time web dev course is definitely a step in the right direction. Join the HackerYou community! You won't regret it :)
Really recommend HackerYou to anyone who's on the fence about coding. Its a great facility and the staff is very friendly. Learned a lot and made some new friends.
Before I came across HackerYou, I had been contemplating about a career change to software development for over a year and had taken numerous online courses. However, the pace at which I was learning was not satisfying and the fact that I was randomly picking and choosing courses without a set curriculum didn't help at all.
Then I came across HackerYou. An immersive learning experience of 9 weeks that would teach me all the skills I needed to find employment as a developer sounded great.
All throughout the bootcamp, we learned lots of languages/tools/frameworks that are industry standards and built a project each time we learned something new. These projects later on became parts of our portfolios to help us with our job search.
Overall, the instructors were great, the support staff was extremely accommodating and receptive to any kind of feedback (special shout out to Charlotte) and the job support we received to find employment after the bootcamp was outstanding (special shout out to Chi Chi)
I can't recommend HackerYou enough to anyone who is looking for a career change in a short amount of time and wants to be a part of a thriving Toronto tech community for life.
I've taken 2 part-time courses at HackerYou and have really enjoyed both experiences. The teachers and mentors are very welcoming and go out of their way to ensure your understanding and grasp of the subject matter. It's a great learning environment and I really appreciate how much one-on-one time is available for students to get help with each of their particular projects.
I recently graduated from HackerYou s Immersive Bootcamp. It was the best decision of my life. All of the staff, students, and alumni are warm, welcoming and extremely supportive.
Getting a job isn t easy or guaranteed, but I couldn t imagine trying to do so without the help and tools from everyone at HackerYou!
I attended Hackeryou in Winter 2016. At first I was a bit apprehensive about the program with claims like, all attendees walk away with a job / the overwhelming amount of information that was going to be taught to us in such a short period of time. But by the end of it, and almost two years later, I think this was one of the best decisions I've made. HackerYou, its community, the teachers and the staff are incredibly generous with their time and resources-- something that was an alien concept for me, coming from a visual arts non profit background. They are selective about who they let in to their program, and only take on people that are absolutely dedidcated to their craft. Here are some things that I think one should be aware of when it comes to the program:
-- You are basically trained to fit into a corporate mold, something I struggled with during my time there and afterwards. Once I graduated, I took the corporate advice that was given to me and did what I wanted to do, but always kept that in the back of my head. It's actually helped me alot. and everyone at HackerYou I found has been extremely encouraging of me taking my own path.
-- Literally all of the teachers, everyone in the staff are THE NICEST people you will ever meet, its almost a bit frightening at first, but you really start to like it.
-- still TWO years later, with me probably being the oddest oddball out thats attended HackerYou, I reached out to Heather, the CEO of HackerYou to help me negotiate the contract that was offered to me at my new job last week, and she responded very quickly as always with just the right points to make and how to go about doing it the most efficient way. I have the utmost amount of respect for this woman. She is terrifiying in all the right ways and will give you the cut throat tough love that you need to save your professional career.
Overall. I think if you enjoy coding, if you enjoy spending a lot of time doing really detailed work, this is ultimately the best program for that, and you will grow to really love and respect the community thats handed to you on a silver platter.
My experience at HackerYou was an amazing one. A few months into my maternity leave I have decided to look for an alternate career path and at the beginning was looking at going into Software Testing but once I looked further into careers in tech I stumbled upon web development. Initially I tried to learn online but quickly realized I need a class environment to be able to focus. At that point I decided to look into schools that teach web dev. I initially signed for a Con-Ed course at George Brown due to the cost of the course but then look into it deeper and felt that George Brown is not going to give me the skills I need to succeed and then I started looking into coding schools and found HackerYou to be the best fit. I dropped the GB course and in the last moment signed up for the P/T Intro and Advanced Web Development course at HackerYou and let me tell you I am so glad I did. Yes, it is triple the cost but believe me it is so worth it. The education you will get at HackerYou is invaluable. They will get you to where you need to be. There are no exams and tests you learn by doing projects and honestly it is the best way to learn. I am amazed at how I went from very little knowledge to building responsive multi-page websites in just 12 weeks. The mentors and instructors are very knowledgeable and helpful. If you are thinking of applying for the bootcamp this definately a course I would recommend to take before you do.
There are so many reasons why HY is special. They find new and innovative ways to make learning challenging content a fun experience. The teachers are top notch web developers themselves, and the focus is on learning skills and languages that you will be using in the "real world". You will come out of this course with a solid foundation in the major front-end languages (HTML, CSS, JS) and the tools you will be using to work in those languages (Git, Gulp, Sublime Text) and much more. In addition to all of that, for the bootcamp in particular, they offer a tremendous amount of post-grad support and make it their mission to help you find the right job for you. The icing on the cake is that the community is so good that you will want to stay involved even after the course is over. So, as a student, you have access to the teachers, mentors AND the entire alumni community. It's unlike any learning experience I've ever had.
Thanks to HackerYou's course material and support, I was able to completely change my career in less than 6 months.
My time at HackerYou was amazing! I took part-time web dev in the evenings before taking the plunge in January 2016 to full-time immersive program. It was amazing! It's a great environment to learn in - the instructors are knowledgeable and enthusiastic, as are the alumni, and the students in my cohort were incredibly supportive throughout this admittedly intense experience and became good friends. The community surrounding HackerYou is truly impressive. I got a job just shy of three months out of bootcamp, with lots of coaching through the job search process, and I'm now working as a front-end developer at Rogers with lots of other HackerYou grads. I really feel like I learned solid skills that I can continue improving long past the length of the course. Can't recommend it enough.
I took the Web Development Boot Camp with Wes Bos and it was one of the most beneficial and rewarding learning experiences I could have asked for. The class was incredibly hands-on and the amount of information I learned and was able to apply immediately was staggering. I'm returning for more courses in the coming weeks and can't wait to dive back into their classroom.
Completed the UX course in early 2017. Great location, great workspace. Industry professionals as Instructor and TAs. Great community with very helpful staff outside of class. Met a lot of new friends and lots of valuable lessons learned! Would definitely recommend this for someone who's looking to learn more about UX.
One of the best experiences I have ever been a part of. The community is amazing, friendly and supportive. I started with the part-time web development course and transitioned into the bootcamp in fall 2016. It was a great launching pad for me in my next step towards new work and experiences in the tech industry. From learning key concepts and current in-demand skills HackerYou has got you covered. I learned so much and I am continuing that process everyday. Since graduating I have been doing freelance work and am excited for my next challenges moving forward!
I took a part-time Web Development course in the Fall of 2017 and let me tell you, I've never enjoyed school this much before - didn't know school can be fun! Hacker You has been a great experience for me. I don't know how they manage to teach you so much in a short period of time - but they do! All in a very supportive environment. Instructors and volunteers are 100% focused on setting you up for success and will work with you to make sure you are always on track. For now, I will miss my coding week nights but I hope I will find my way back to Hacker You sometime soon!
I attended the Fall 2017 Part-Time JavaScript course. I really enjoyed my time at HackerYou and I took my skills to the next level. I had basic HTML/CSS skills coming into the course (that weren't really part of the curriculum, but you get more practice as you play around with the projects), but the course was comprehensive in everything about JavaScript - including classes in the advanced portion of the course in React. What I would recommend in the future is more practice with React, APIs and other advanced topics. Also, I would have loved to learn more about other industry topics - like using GitHub, Node and employment.
The best part about HackerYou, however, is how they treat you. Christopher, one of the staff in charge of students, was incredibly nice and responsive to your needs. He brought surprises like food on certain days, for little things like the WiFi not working. The instructors and mentors (Anne, Trudy and Garrett) were extremely helpful and worth the whole experience. I wouldn't have learned as much as I did without their support.
In my opinion, this was a great experience to learn more about coding and to learn from industry professionals, in a wonderful caring environment.
Amazing instructors and community with constantly updated content. Pretty much changed my life. Would suggest for a range of skills and interest. From the beginner to advanced, from looking to build sites for fun to those looking to completely change their career and become a developer.
I am so grateful to Heather and entire HY team (and the awesome city of Toronto) for the experience I had at the Winter 2016 Front-End Bootcamp, and at the Spring 2016 Part-Time JavaScript Course.
The Bootcamp was the second vocational training course I had taken, and while the structure was similar to the other course (focus on hands-on, project-based learning, which I love), the atmosphere at HackerYou made my experience there incredibly positive. HackerYou places a huge emphasis on having students work WITH your classmates to solve problems and acquire skills. The focus on teamwork, collaboration, and positive reinforcement among peers was instrumental in ensuring that everyone in the class was successful, and left the course excited about the career on which they were about to embark. The skills I learned at HackerYou helped me to land a job at AKQA San Francisco, where I currently work as an Associate Front-End Developer.
Take a course at HackerYou and you'll not only acquire valuable career skills but also become a member for life of an incredibly supportive and positive community. I would 100% recommend the courses at HackerYou to anyone who is hoping to build skills in the field of internet and technology.
Hi all! I completed the Web Development Fundamentals course and am wrapping up the Web Development Advanced course and I have to say that I've had a fantastic experience learning web development with HackerYou. If you're looking to pick up web development skills, this is definitely the place to do it.
The instructors for both courses are all seasoned web dev professionals so they're highly knowledgeable, helpful, and patient with those just learning to code. They're also all HackerYou alumni, which is a testament not only to the effectiveness of the courses at HackerYou but the strong sense of community that is fostered around it.
The curriculum is updated frequently to keep in line with the current practices in the industry and the course notes are detailed yet easy to understand. We learn via practical exercises so we're always practicing our coding skills. I particularly like how real examples from live websites are often used to illustrate the different techniques we're being taught in the course. It's a great way to show exactly what can be done with the knowledge we've gained.
The project-based assignments can be difficult but are designed to push the limits of what we cover in the course. By keeping us just a little out of our comfort zone, HackerYou makes sure that our skills are kept sharp and that students become comfortable with using the knowledge gained in new and innovative ways.
All in all the courses are fast-paced and there is a lot of content to cover, but HackerYou does a great job making learning to code an exciting and accessible experience. I highly recommend it for anyone interested in learning web development.
I took the full-time Web Development Immersive bootcamp in the summer of 2016 and have been working as a front end developer for about 3 months now. It was definitely the most challenging thing I've put myself through and isn't for the faint of heart. That being said, it was also the most enjoyable learning experience I've ever had. The instructors and mentors did a great job of guiding us as we learned the basics of web development and then helped us solve problems on our own as we approached the end of the program. The community is also filled with alumni (myself included) who are itching to help students out with technical questions and general support. On top of that, I got a full-time job in a month and a half and made some great friends so it was well worth the time and money.
Before HackerYou I was at a bank, doing a job that simply wasn t the right fit for me. But through it, I used Excel primarily and realized I could use a programming language called Visual Basic to make some macro. It was then I realized how coding isn t as hard as I thought it was, and in fact I quite enjoyed it. On January 2018 I left my job, took the part-time beginner/advanced web development courses, then moving on to the full-time bootcamp. I don t think you can find a more supportive environment than HackerYou. I think Heather and her team has done an incredible job fostering the right culture and mindset. I believe almost anyone can succeed here as long as you follow the formula, and you re not afraid to take that first step.
I am finishing up the Part-time Web-development course at HackerYou (2018). It's really great experience to learn web development at HackerYou. The instructor Jazz is awesome to explain event hard concepts, always with some humours. I also love the way they run the classes: great materials, mentors are super helpful and using tool like basecamp & slack. All together it becomes one of my best learning experience. Highly recommended. Cheers!
I took part-time web development course Summer 2017 and it was a really good experience for me since I did not know about coding that much. The content was absolutely good and it helps me to learn coding in a really good order. I would like to mention mentors (Tiff, Tom, Mike and Jen) were really friendly and answer every single question until you totally get the answer
I took the Fall 2017 Part-time web development course and loved every minute of it! The courses were challenging in the best way -- and I'm amazed at how much I was able to learn in just a few months with absolutely no prior experience. Tom was an incredible instructor! And all the course mentors were awesome as well. Love the projects we did during the class and it was cool being able to come out with a portfolio. Already the skills I've learned have helped me in my current role where I work closely with developers. Can't wait to take more courses at HackerYou in the future!
My experience at HackerYou has been very positive. I've taken two of their part time courses (Web Development and JavaScript) and am currently enrolled in their Web Immersive bootcamp.
I've found the instructors and mentors to be very helpful and informative, and the course material presented in a very fun and engaging manner. The HY community itself is very inclusive and supportive. They have a great alumni network and it's exciting to see that alumni want to come back to support students by mentoring and volunteering their time.
A few things I love about bootcamp so far: it's not only about coding. They truly care about your well-being and want to see you succeed. Each bootcamp student is paired with a bootcamp buddy (a previous bootcamp graduate volunteering their time) to provide you with any support you may need. Each week there's Salad Club so at least we're eating some vegetables during these intense 9 weeks. JavaScript weeks are taught in smaller groups to ensure the material is being understood. Real world experiences and tips are constantly being shared.
I moved to Toronto on 4th of April and started with my Web Dev course on the very same day! I had applied for the Spring bootcamp and did not clear the tech test and was recommended the part time Web Dev course, i feel it was the right recommendation because it seems like a good introductory step towards everyone who has interest in joining the bootcamp.
It was the best decision i made for myself for a career in web development. The instructor and the mentors are very supportive and patient with the students. Even with prior experience with HTML and CSS i got to learn so many new things and felt comfortable with the course from the very first week. I am very confident in developing my own sites now!
The course structure is great with all the latest industry standards being followed and the teaching approach is fab ! The overall experience is really valuable and it feels great to be a part of this awesome HackerYou community. I recommend everyone looking for a career in web development to enroll for this course. Looking forward to apply for the Fall Bootcamp !
I took the part-time course in April 2017 and attended the summer Bootcamp after finishing the part-time course. Both of them are great and memorable experiences. Instructors are more than great. Kristen, Simon and Sylvia, they are very helpful, patient, funny, friendly and inspiring. The course curriculum is designed very thoughtfully and reasonable.
Especially the CEO of HackerYou, Heather, the job hunting skills and experiences she taught us is life-long valuable. What's more, as an international student with imperfect English writing skills, she also helped me fix all the language problems of my cover letter, resume and other job hunting materials. I appreciate her help and encouragement from the bottom of my heart, and I also want to say Kristen is my favorite teacher in Canada!
For me Hacker You stands out from the crowd. After months of research I signed up to the Part Time Web Development course this fall and enjoyed every second of it. The course material and learning style is very dynamic and relevant, and the instructors were genuinely passionate about working there which really helped to set the tone. I left the course with a number of portfolio projects to my name and thorough understanding of Front-End Web Development.
The course is very comprehensive. I really like the way of teaching at Hacker You, they are not just teaching the concept, but also give us a lot of opportunities to put what we learnt in practice. The instructors are really helpful, there are extra office hour before each project to help us with our projects. I really like the notes at HackerYou, it is available for all students, I can refer it at any time, and it includes a lot useful links and articles for us in case we want to use in the future. I would definitely recommend HackerYou to my friends who have interests in coding.
HackerYou is the best Hands-on, project-based learning centre in Toronto. It s a creative learning centre and Instructors are industry leader-professionals.
I took both part-time intro and advanced to Web Development course in 2015 while working as web designer at my company to upgrade my CSS and html skills. It was a great experience, I learned a lot and I now use skills learned in my every day work.
Before coming to HackerYou I worked as an agricultural technician. Although I didn't mind spending most of my days puttering around on a tractor, I felt like my job had no prospect of becoming a career. I jumped off my tractor, came to the city, took the part-time web development course and fell in love with coding as well as the community that HackerYou provided. Very quickly I knew I had to do the bootcamp! Although it was challenging, it was also extremely rewarding, and with the help of very supportive instructors and peers, I became a dev! For the first time in my life I have a career that excites me and I never catch myself counting down the hours until my day is done. Thanks HackerYou!
I wanted to change careers into an industry that would be more fulfilling and challenging than my previous line of work in the insurance industry and I discovered that web development sated what I was looking for in a new career. When I learned about HackerYou I was told a few things that made them stand out from the crowded bootcamp space. After completing two part-time courses and the full-time Web Development Immersive bootcamp, I can attest to these two truths about HackerYou.
First, the community really cares! From my first visit to the campus to attending demo nights as an alumnus I have always been met with a community that truly cares and is excited to see you learn and thrive. Whether it s asking questions online or a bootcamp buddy taking time out of their day (long after they ve graduated, that is) people are always willing to help in whatever capacity they can.
Second, the hands-on project-based learning style was very helpful in learning new languages (literally, new languages). As bootcamp progresses, less time is spent in the classroom where instructors are teaching new concepts and more time is spent creating your own portfolio-worthy projects. I definitely felt that this hands-on approach was the best way to learn as it encourages you to try new things in new situations that you wouldn t necessarily have thought of. You ll also learn to collaborate with your peers in the bootcamp and you will learn from them as well as they provide a different perspective.
If you had told me about the idea of a bootcamp just a couple of years ago - that in 9 short weeks you would learn how to code and then be able to find a job in a completely new field I probably would have said that you re crazy. But when it s all said and done, HackerYou was able to help turn my crazy into reality.
I m a front-end web developer (thanks to HackerYou bootcamp) and I work for a software company. I ve got a background in design, and I knew I wanted to follow up my bootcamp experience with the HackerYou intro and advanced UX class with a plan to leverage more design opportunities in my current role.
Because I took both the part-time web development class and the bootcamp at HackerYou, they were already my top pick. I knew how the school structured their classes and that I would have access to great resources during the 12 weeks of the course. I checked out other UX programs in the city and online, but none of them offered the kind of learning and support that I knew I would get at HackerYou.
The class schedule was perfect. I work uptown and have a really hard time getting to weeknight classes, so committing to UX every Saturday was ideal. Even though class was only once a week, I had access to Ricardo, the lead instructor, and the two class mentors, Jas and Jen, throughout the week. They were available for extra help and to run through project ideas exactly when I needed them.
Ricardo has an abundance of enthusiasm (an essential quality for teaching a Saturday class) and experience. I found it very easy to learn because he integrated real-world examples with textbook theory and in-class exercises that helped me wrap my head around some tricky material. He taught masters-level UX concepts in a way that felt more like fun than learning, and when I was at home working on assignments I was surprised at how much material stuck in my head.
I was hoping for a class that gave me foundational UX design principles as well as the knowledge and skill to put together comprehensive case studies, and I finished the 12 weeks feeling confident and excited about what I had learned and how I could apply it.
In the time since UX class finished, I ve been able to expand my job description to include extensive collaboration with the design and UX team. I ve got more opportunities in my current role and more appreciation for the work that my colleagues put into designing applications.
If you re looking for someone who will only teach you how to make pretty things, this might not be the best course for you. But if you want to learn how to use qualitative and quantitative research to solve problems with beautiful design, then you ve hit the jackpot with this class.
When I was looking around for a path toward becoming a web developer, I heard about HackerYou, and, to be honest, it sounded a bit like a scam. It was hard to believe that I could get the skills necessary to be a web developer inside of nine weeks. However, after some due diligence, I took the plunge and am so glad I did. I've been working in the industry now for two years and finally feel like I have a career. My husband was so jealous of my success that he did the bootcamp as well and has had an equally good experience.
If you're looking to get enough skills to get a foot in the door of the industry, stop wondering if this is the right step and apply already!
I took the very first Hacker You bootcamp and I cannot recommend this school any higher! The people are all amazing and so supportive. From the Hacker You staff, instructors, mentors, and alumni, everyone is there to help and support you throughout your journey into your new career. Even your fellow students have been well vetted and are all amazing people.
During my bootcamp I had an opportunity to attend the Boost Agents', Next Gen Dinner Series 2014. I got to meet many people from other bootcamp programs and they all had a lot of negative things to say about their bootcamps. HackerYou grads have nothing but positive experiences.
If you're looking to make a career change into the exciting world of Tech - this is the only school you should be considering. You will not regret going here and you will find employment upon your graduation. I have been continuously employed since the day I finished Hacker You and have recruiters consistently contacting me for the last 3 years as well.
I took the part-time web development course and learned A LOT. I came in not knowing much about making a website, by the end of it, I had a site complete and functional. The instructors are great, friendly, and very helpful. Went to a few bootcamp web development schools in Toronto, HackerYou felt like the best one and I'm glad I chose it. Plan to take the full-time program in the summer!
From my first part-time "Intro to HTML/CSS" course with Tom (who was excellent) to full time employment after completing HackerYou's immersive bootcamp took a total of 9 months. That was with ZERO prior programming experience.
HackerYou put me on a path and changed my life for the better. I highly recommend.
I took the intro and advanced Web Development course at HackerYou, and it was a stark contrast to the other educational experiences I had received in other college and university settings. HackerYou has a student first approach to everything, and I felt the value for money was extremely worth it. There are lots of mentors available outside of class for questions, and the teachers take time to address questions of all students.
The projects were interesting and exciting, and the manner in which feedback was given was very productive.
The mentors and teachers provide real world examples for using specific code, which was very useful to me. Because of this part time course, I decided to switch industries and applied to the HackerYou bootcamp. I recommend this school to anyone interested in web development of any kind.
I completed HackerYou's UX course in fall of 2018, and it gave me the push that I needed to pursue something different in my career. The course covers a variety of topics from conceptual to practical, but they are also paced well to not overwhelm you with information. Best of all, you will come out of the course with portfolio-ready projects to show off your new knowledge!
Ricardo is a fantastic instructor, I learned so many skills in the course that I now use on the job. Additionally, I met many amazing classmates who are friendly and eager to learn, which made the entire experience that much more enjoyable.
My time at HackerYou has been amazing, the entire process from application to after you've finished your course feels seamless and well-thought-out. I cannot say enough good things, 100% recommended! :)
I took a part-time Web Development course starting in 2017. I'm now almost finished, and I'm incredibly impressed with the quality of the learning environment at HackerYou!
Everything about the process felt very personal and designed to help ensure that I succeeded, from the personal interview before taking the class, to the (extremely detailed and helpful!) individual feedback on my projects. The notes system that HackerYou uses is fantastic. I was amazed at how much I was able to learn in such a short period of part-time study.
Robin is an excellent instructor, and my mentors Jeanne and Angel were always approachable and helpful. I never felt intimidated or uncomfortable in the class environment. Overall, the part-time program was a fantastic experience and investment, and I felt very prepared to apply for the Web Development Immersive after taking it!
I also really appreciate that HackerYou offers a variety of class times for their part-time program, including Sundays! I live in Guelph and work Saturdays, so I was afraid that the program wouldn't be an option for me, but the Sunday class time was perfect.
I can't recommend HackerYou enough! If you are looking to give Web Development a try, these classes are great!
Update: I have now completed HackerYou's Web Development Immersive, and it solidified everything I already felt! Everyone is so helpful and supportive. The teaching is top notch, and everyone is excited to be there even when the course material gets tough.
The job support after you finish is what truly set it apart from my other educational experiences. Heather offers so much support, and was amazing about answering job hunt related questions whenever I had them. It would have been much more difficult to make the career change without her.
Part Time Web Development Course The instructors definitely encouraged all questions to be asked. The environment is really inclusive and definitely a safe space, I felt welcomed as soon as I stepped into HY! What they teach you is really reflective of what the real world is like, which is important if you want to change careers and get a sense of what clients and companies expect you to know. Highly recommend HY!
Took Webdevelopment course, loved it, nailed it. Best instructors i came across in my life.Super friendly Best course layout. Going for Javascript and then Bootcamp finally. Gonna be amazing.I am confident
The Hackeryou(Juno) Bootcamp is an intense-hyper learning experience where you learn the basic and most consistently used tools in Web-Development. These tools would be enough to get you started in the field in a Junior Developer role in the industry.
Pros:
- 3-4 Instructors in class during lectures to help out multiple students at a time. - More in depth with HTML/CSS/Javascript - Post-Bootcamp Javascript lessons (Amazing material in this one) - Weekly projects based around the foundations of the lectures. - Good facility for classes and a 24hr workspace for those late-night work marathons - Amazing community building with likeminded people - Good Post-Bootcamp career support - Industry night towards the end of the bootcamp - Lessons in applying for jobs/ resume building
Cons/Minor Cons:
- Some of the content in the lectures feel a little out dated, although learning them can be beneficial for niche situations - Not enough time spent with complex material (React) - If you have taken the part time courses, a lot of the HTML/CSS lessons can be repetitive but is good practice regardless
For me personally, I got what I put into it. You can pour more hours into projects and exploring the capabilities of your newly found knowledge but be prepared to lose a lot of sleep for it. There s nothing wrong with sticking to a Minimum Viable Product, you learn more by understanding the fundamentals first before diving deep into adding complex features to your apps.
Looking back, I m quite satisfied with the experience I had. I learned the most by just doing the projects which I don t think I would have held myself accountable if not for the structured environment of the Bootcamp.
I would strongly recommend the program to anyone who is hard set in making a career jump into the web development industry. You get the most out of the 9 weeks + Post Bootcamp classes, learning the fundamentals of modern web development to get started in a new career as a web developer!
I took the part-time Web Dev course. The days were crammed full of information and we followed along with our online comprehensive class/lecture notes. They're online, but you lifetime access which is great. I took full day Saturdays option, but I realize I would've preferred to space out my lessons and exposure to new material to smaller, twice a week chunks (couldn't due to work). That said, the advantage of being there for several hours at a time gives you a different type of continuity and ability to synthesize new info during practice times. You also get to hang out more with your classmates during brakes and lunches. A full day class was more representative of how the immersive bootcamp would feel like, except it was totally chill. I did find breaks on the short side though, whether it was 5mins for coffee or the half hour lunch, but we were allowed to have drinks and food at our desks so that worked in order to cover enough material during the day. There were a couple of TAs to help out whenever someone is stuck during lectures or during exercises. Jenny was great and she conveyed the material in a really approachable way. You don't get much theory behind the concepts, but you get a really good working knowledge; and you're always encouraged to seek out more on your own and work on problem-solving skills, esp. through online resources. If you need additional help you also get optional extended hours to meet outside of classroom time. It covers HTML and CSS well, but for JS you'll have to take a separate course or continue on your own (you learn just enough to get you going and to start understanding the structure). I found the classroom layout a bit challenging, as the room was deep, so I always felt tired from trying to see properly on the projector screen; they'll zoom in as needed (or requested), but I kept coming in late for the 9am start so I was always sitting a bit back... my work doesn't ever even start before 10:30am, so it may sound ridiculous but 9am start time was rough for me. I once attended a workshop where the room was wide rather than deep, and they had two projector screens - that setup was really effective, and I hope HackerYou has similar rooms for bootcamp (I'm still considering that option!).
Nothing compares to the classroom scenario for learning. The HackerYou team has killer course material ready and updated in addition to extra resources to expand what we learned in class. I chose HackerYou because I felt they were a happy family from the moment I stepped in and I am glad to see the lessons were equally great.
So, I am someone who does not intend to code or go into coding. I took the intro to HTML and CSS course and the advanced second week course too. I did so entirely to be able to monitor employees in my own organization and understand their challenges. The course was exactly what I hoped it would be. The instructors were all terrific and the teaching was well presented and comprehensive. Price aside (it is a bit pricey), I would recommend this to anyone interested in getting a start in this field or anyone who wants to learn what coding is all about.
My first course at HackerYou was in fall 2014. Since then, I'm happy that I chose them. After taking the HTML & CSS part-time, I was able to land a job at a marketing agency. I came back to take the UX Design course in 2016, which was an amazing experience. HackerYou is more than the education you get here, is about the networking and the amazing collaborative environment that they have accomplished. I just started the winter Bootcamp (yes, is my third time coming back). In only three weeks, it has already exceeded my expectations. I'm sure that I will keep on coming back, even if it's not for a course, I will volunteer as a mentor for anything I can.
Coming to HackerYou, I had minimal coding experience. It s a terrifying prospect, learning a whole new skill, starting a new career. The most amazing thing I have found in HackerYou is the support and community they ve given me. Literally every person on staff at HackerYou is invested in your success and will do what they can to make sure you re successful. From the instructors taking the extra time to make sure you deeply understand the programming concepts over the specific syntax of a language, to the guidance Heather offers in your job hunt, the course is designed to push you to get everything you possibly can out of it.
In five months and with a Herculean effort from the HackerYou community, I have gone from being a graphic designer to starting my first job as a full stack developer. I can honestly say this is not something I could have done on my own my success is entirely thanks to the extraordinary commitment of the people here to help you through the full process. The people who come to HackerYou love HackerYou for that reason. As long as you re willing to put forth your best effort, the whole community surrounding this place has your back and will make absolutely sure that your experience is not one you will soon forget.
If you want a place that is inclusive, supportive, fun, and conducive to growth: you found it. HackerYou helped my realize my career direction and made me enjoy school again. Thank you for existing, HY!
One of the best educational experiences I've ever had. The program is top-notch, giving you the skills you need to be competitive in the industry, and a great number of portfolio projects to help you on your job hunt. Plus the instructors are kind, caring, and genuinely knowledgeable and helpful members of the coding community.
But more than all of that, the community is amazing. It's supportive, non-competitive, and genuinely driven to help everyone in it succeed. In those moments when JavaScript seems too hard and you feel like you just want to give up, that community steps in and helps you figure out what the problem is, and encourages you to keep going. I really believe that without that, the program would not be as successful as it is. And it really just characterizes the kind of people that come to HackerYou and exist at HackerYou. If you're that kind of person, it's the place for you.
I ve always had an interest in web-development but I wanted to make sure it was a good fit before committing to making a career change, so I enrolled in the Spring 2018 Intro to Web Dev course. I chose HackerYou after reading many positive reviews, specifically on Reddit and Course Report, of their supportive community and their dedicated instructors. Truthfully, before I took the part-time course, I definitely debated how beneficial taking this course would be; if web development was something I could have taught myself yes, but it probably would not have gone as smoothly. And now that I ve completed the part-time course, I can confidently say I would ve make the same decision if I had to do it again. The course is very well-structured, and the instructor and mentors make the course material clear and easy to understand. I ve learned far more than I could ve taught myself in the same amount of time, and in a very organized way. The projects assigned allow you to challenge yourself by applying the material you learn throughout the course. I would recommend this course to anyone s who s interested in web development. It was very rewarding and I cannot wait to see what the full-time bootcamp has to offer!
Going to HackerYou for both the part-time course and the full-time bootcamp was one of the best decisions I've ever made. HackerYou is filled with great people and a helping hand is always around the corner. Not only will you acquire the skills needed to start a career in web development, you will also gain access to a network of hundreds of other developers to collaborate and share experiences with. I would recommend HackerYou to anyone, whether starting a new career or looking to sharpen up your skills.
I am just finishing up the part-time Web Development and I had such a positive experience. I came to HackerYou with essentially no coding experience and I know feel like I have been given a tiny key that basically unlocks the internet!
The instructor Jazzmin VanGeel was an excellent source of information and real world experience from the world of web dev. She was patient and took the time to try and answer every single question. The teaching assistants Melissa and Jaime were also super supportive and ready to help every step of the way.
The lessons are easy to understand and the class is packed with resources that I intend to keep practicing with on my own, even after the class is done.
I would totally recommend HackerYou! I'll be back for sure :)
HackerYou in an excellent coding school with a supportive community and knowledgeable instructors. I took part time Intro to Web Development course in fall 2015 and absolutely loved it. Ryan Christiani taught with exceptional knowledge and enthusiasm and all projects were hands-on and explained step by step. I returned to HackerYou this summer for the Immersive Bootcamp program. The course curriculum changes to keep up with new technologies and standards and provides students essential skills for current jobs in tech, you are never stuck learning something that you will not need. With many new part-time courses added, new students and past grads alike are welcomed to learn and explore. HackerYou helped me to make a transition into a new career as a WordPress developer and i could not recommend this school more.
I attended the PT Web Development Fundamentals followed by the PT Advanced Web Development courses in the Fall of 2016 and then attended and succesfully completed the FT Web Development Immersive Bootcamp in Spring 2017. Although there are people who are able to apply to the Bootcamp and be accepted without going through the PT program, I highly recommend it. Going through PT first allowed me to complete 3 projects and get an good understanding of the expectations for attending HY full time. It was working through the PT projects that sucessfully prepared me for the tech challange and gave me the confidence I needed to apply for bootcamp. I was also able to see what I could expect from the class environment at HY.
Anne Thomas was the course instructor (who was great) and there was always a minimum of 2 mentors available as well to answer questions. The majority of our time in class was hands on. We were constantly coding along during lectures, and then had time after lectures to continue to work on the skills we had just learned. There was never time to sit and wonder about what was next as we were constantly involved in the learning process, not just being told about the things we would eventually know how to do. The environment was fun, allowed for questions on the spot to clarify any doubts, and although days could be long, they always felt as though the time went fast.
Bootcamp was intense. I was a married mother of a 5 year old when I left for the 9 week bootcamp. I saw my family on Sundays for a couple of hours when they would come into Toronto to see me for the day. This is no light commitment. If you are thinking that this will be a college type of experience, you are very mistaken. When I wasn't at HY learning, then I was at HY working on a project, or up early/late working on projects. Bootcamp is expensive, and not something that you will hopefully ever need to do again. But you need to commit, and follow Heather's instructions. She will lay it on the line for you. HY wouldn't still be around if she didn't know what she was talking about.
I've been working as a Front End Dev for 5 months now and I can honestly say that attending HY is what made that possible. I left bootcamp with the coding skills I needed, but also with a great understanding of the interview process and what kind of jobs to apply for. Having the ability to review jobs offers with Heather was amazing. I felt confident in asking for what I felt my skills were worth, and it was great knowing that Heather would be able to steer me clear of offers that were not what they should be.
Contemporary curriculum combined with invaluable mentorship from both instructors and alumni are just a few of the pillars that make HackerYou the best institution to position you as a successful web developer.
Personally, I am able to attribute HY and the full-time bootcamp I completed in Summer 2014 for jump starting my new career in Web Development and for the success I have achieved thus far.
A year ago I was looking for a career change and, having always had an interest in coding, I decided to take the Spring 2016 HackerYou Immersive Front-end bootcamp. The experience was very positive for me during and after the bootcamp. I am now employed as a full time Front-end developer and most importantly - I love my job.
Here are some of the key reasons why I would recommend HackerYou:
(1) The organization puts a great deal of effort in making sure you get out of their program with the required skills (HTML, CSS, Javascript, etc.) and profile in order to be successful in the web development sector. As long as you follow the process, you will find a (great) job once you get out. (2) The bootcamp is very well structured in terms of learning and instructors/mentors availability, which enables you to learn fast without feeling overwhelmed. (3) During bootcamp, you will create a portfolio of websites (responsive design, JQuery projects, API project, etc), which is a great asset once you begin job hunting. (4) The HackerYou community is a very strong one. Alumni will help you with technical questions, will help you keep a perspective on things and will share their experience post-bootcamp with you. (5) Most importantly: I had a blast doing the bootcamp, had a blast working on the assignments and discovering my new passion for web development, had a blast making new friends & would absolutely do it again.
...And a year later, I am now back for more, as I am currently taking the Full Stack web Development part-time class. Just do it, you won't regret it.
I went to HackerYou in in January 2016 as a student at the Front-End Bootcamp Immersive. I choose HackerYou after researching all the coding bootcamps in Toronto because I was drawn by their strong focus on community.
I received a job after 3 weeks of graduating as a Jr. Front-End Software Developer at a fantastic startup.
HackerYou's instructors are all extremely passionate about what they are doing, and their focus is to make sure YOU understand. They will take the time you need to make sure that you grasp the concepts and really thrive, as well as feel confident in your new abilities.
After completing the bootcamp, HackerYou sticks with you and you receive fantastic advice/coaching on how to proceed in your job hunt. I am even able to mentor friends about how they should hunt for jobs because the training is so good.
What's extremely astonishing is the sense of community that HackerYou creates. Through establishing a positive environment where you build up your peers, your entire cohorts success is your success. Once graduating, you are part of an alumni community who want to see you succeed, and what to help you thrive.
I am currently finishing up HackerYou's part time JavaScript course after completing their part time Web Development course beforehand. Having come to web development (and any kind of coding) as a complete novice, HackerYou provided an open and supportive learning community with great instructors, real world problems and solutions, and excellent learning opportunities. This proved true with the JavaScript course as well. Our instructor broke down intimidating topics and concepts into simple, real world fundamentals and at no point during the course did I feel intimidated to ask questions about anything. Our instructor and mentors in the course are all professionals in the industry, which gave our class a lot of insight into how the topics we were learning in class applied in a real world environment. I really like the hands on approach HackerYou applies in its classrooms and I am walking away from this course confident and very ready to learn more.
I took the accelerated Web development course a month ago and I can say I learned a lot. The thing I most liked was the supportive enviroment and the energy of everybody! I liked it so much I am taking the javascript course and I am applying for the bootcamp.
I took the part-time WordPress class (spring 2017) @ HackerYou with Wes Bos. I have to say Wes Bos and the mentors were great. The class is progressive so I recommend not missing a class, but they do help you catch up if you need help. Wes' teaching style definitely works for me and he keeps the class interesting. I learned a lot with this class and I'm now more confident in my WordPress skills and can confidently say that I can provide my clients with a custom WordPress theme suitable for their needs. The class projects were challenging but with what you learned in class, it's enough to pull it off. Shout out to our mentors Maureen, Suzette and Allison for doing a phenomenal job in helping us through the course. Looking forward to what HackerYou has to offer in the future.
Believe the hype! Hacker You is indeed everything you have heard and more. I got a job in the industry within a week of graduating, through the industry night hosted by HY. The community and support system at Hacker you is incredible, while at the school as well as after . It s easy to find a school to learn but not one with such a strong community of talented developers and teachers that are so willing to help in any way possible. They care about you and if you really want to work in this field they will provide all the support you need till you get there.
I have now been a developer for 8 months and was pleased to find the HY prepared me for everything I needed to get started in this industry with ease. Tools like using github, the command line and knowing about PM tools like Jira were defiantly helpful as a newbie to this industry. In terms of coding languages the boot camp can be overwhelming as we cover a lot in a short time but it will defiantly get you your first job in the industry. I am currently back at HY to up my skills and continue growing with the ever growing roster of talent coming out of here.
