Having been a Cat Owner for over 40 years and the recent passing of my 19 year old Tabby who scummed to pancreatitis after a number of days in Hospital and follow up that required me to give him medication regularly.
He made it for about 3 months after his hospitalization.
I adopted almost immediately after I had him cremated, because a cat or multiple cats have always been part of the Family.
I adopted a 4 year old female from this shelter. After about a week the Cat would not use the litter box and began soiling all around the house.
My Sister was visiting who has 2 cats and she suggested we put the Cat in the guest bathroom with food & litter box and the cat used the box.
After 3 or 4 days the cat was permitted access the rest the house and continued to use the box. Once the cat was comfortable in the House again it went back to soiling on rugs etc.
I took the Cat to the Vet and they said the cat was running a low fever and could have an infection of some kind? I paid for an anti -biotic
injection and the Vet suggested I put the Cat litter box and food on my lanai that is walled on both sides with a slider to the interior of the house so it has a more indoor feel and leave the cat there for 4 or 5 days. The cat used the box!
The first day I gave the cat free roam again I was awaken to the Cat soiling on my bed??? We went back to the lanai and the cat used the box.
I then gave her free roam again and the cat was using the boxes on the lanai. I even switch the cat on the Vets suggestion to wet food with water added to avoid any dehydration that she may have from the fever she had experienced. After about 4 days the Cat soiled on one of my rugs right in front of me. I immediately put the cat back on the lanai and it came right back in the house though the pet door I forgot to lock and began soiling on a rug in another room.
After returning the cat to the lanai I found three large stools that she had dropped out side the box. I cannot blame it on the litter or cleanliness all
clumps were removed ASAP and she had multiple boxes with both scented and unscented litter.
I am a pet lover and always have been and never returned a cat I adopted,
they all lived long happy lives and were part of the Family. It was very difficult for me but sadly I had to return this one. My main disappointment with the shelter was that this cat is genuinely unhealthy or has extreme behavior problems and they were not aware of it. I am now faced with the task of having a pillow top mattress and 3 Oriental Carpets professionally cleaned as well as having a Home Entertainment Center refinished.
Besides the Vet Bill, this was a very expensive non - adaption???????
I still plan to adopt another cat in the near future, but I must do more research on local shelters and find one that screens their Cats to be sure I am getting a healthy cat without behavior problems.
Any suggestions on such a Shelter appreciated.

The Worst experience of my interactions with shelt...

The Worst experience of my interactions with shelters all over the world to date. The Volunteer coordinator who i was so nicely connected to while trying to assit in the reuniting of an adult Female Boxer named Echo to her rightful owner, had to of been the most nastiest, rude, unprofessional, immature woman i have ever had dealings with. Having a bad day or not is no reason to yell, talk over, or have attitude with another when the main goal is to be all about pets and cutting down on the Euphemism and instead getting these pets back into the homes of their loved ones. The Volunteer coordinator at Gulf Coast presents herself in a manner just opposite of that goal and has a short temper when asked who is above her. I was hung up on as if i were not talking to an adult t begin with. She not only hung up on me once, or twice it happened three times. All the while all my intentions were to renite Echo with her father who has been relentlessly trying to retrieve his pet from first animal control then the humane society and where is Echo now, according to Gulf coast, the Boxer rescue has her but because the kennel manager is not available until tomorrow morning and the person above the kennel manager that i asked to speak with was on vacation, essentially all operations cease in this situation because according to the volunteer coordinator she was the next in charge and excuse me in my knowledge their is always above in rank at any job and when i ask for that person is when i get hung up on. This woman told me that in Lee County when a pet is brought in as a stray the owner has three days to claim the pet or it goes up for adoption, in my understandings i believed that when a "stray" is brought in to a shelter it is customary to scan to check if their is a microchip in the pet so that the owners can be notified that their pet can be claimed. Echo's father has been trying for 10 days while getting the run around with nothing but cunfusion let alone stress because the fees are mounting, with absolutely no positive direction from Gulf Coast who would rather put the pet in a rescue after the trauma of being in 2 different facilities and without her dad of the 10 years, Echo sits in a rescue wondering, why this woman could not help her get home to her rightful owner. I am ashamed at the way this woman acted towards another professional and i apologize if any other person comes across her miserable exsistence and looses their family member due to her lack of information on how to get Echo home. When someone works in the animal field its wise to have a love for animals living not the opposite, because with your disreguard for the feelings of others and the pets they own you are definatley not doing your job. Just saying

I got a beautiful happy healthy sweet puppy from here. The staff here are very knowledgeable and helpful. They made the adoption process so smooth and easy. They let me go in a play yard with the puppy I was interested in and see if it was a good fit and the staff member was very helpful, friendly, and patient even tho its was a very busy Saturday morning. He was very personable and saw that my puppy was a perfect fit for my home. They made sure they went over all of my puppy's medical needs and medications she was on.

I wish I could give this shelter ZERO stars. I adopted a dog named Chico there in April, 2020. My family loved him to the fullest and 4 days before his 7 months of being with us he passed away because they don t check to see if the dogs are doing well internally. My baby passed away from spleen cancer, liver cancer, and internal bleeding. Had Gulf Coast Human Society taken the time to do test they would have caught this in time. I am also not the only one who I know that adopts from them and then had to lose their fur baby. I called them to get an explanation and all I got was an I m sorry but unfortunately a sorry will NOT bring my bring my baby back. I paid $200 to give another dog a better life only to be left with a broken heart and memories. Now my surviving dog is depressed that she lost her big brother. I hope whoever decides to adopt from this shelter takes their pet and gets a second opinion. Chico was in their care for a year and they couldn t even tell me if he had allergies and all it took was 5 minutes with another vet to tell me that my baby had an hour left to live and had his illness way before I adopted him.

I was told I was not allowed to adopt a dog I liked because I took my Pomeranian who is very mellow and damn they only gave me like 5 minutes to see how they got along of course it's all new and they didn't give him enough time to get to know each other

The level of care for the animals is wonderful. It's very nice that they are a no kill shelter and do they're very best to find all the animals a home. Almost all of my pets have come from here. Not only are you saving an animals life but your going to make memorys. By adopting an animal today it gives other animals a chance to live. Space becomes available when that animal finds a home and in that way more animals will find shelter. There are too many people breeding and buying animals and abandoning them after the fact. Let's be the best people we can be. Volunteer your time or bring a pet home today.

Horrible, I was there a few days ago. I am paying almost $ 200 to adopt an animal that is also locked 24/7 in a cage in this place and they put so many requirements. The puppy is going to have a family that will take care of him and give him a lot of love and they make 1000 excuses. The fact is that they did not give me the dog because on the form I put that I would be part of the time in the lanai with my other dog because these are quite large dogs and they just do not like being stuck all day in 4 walls and because of this they told me that I could not keep the dog. The truth came out more than crying and I have been bad for a few days for this situation. Here is the place I talk about more than clean and with ceiling fans everywhere. Do you really believe that it will be better with you than here with me?

This is a no-kill facility that prepares animals for adoption. I serve as a foster home for kittens until they are ready to be neutered and placed in the adoption facility. The staff are always friendly and helpful. The welfare of the animals is their top priority. Their slogan is "Adopt, don't shop."

The staff at this shelter work their paws off. On our recent Saturday visit, we saw a busy, clean, and well organized facility and were lucky enough to find two new pups to add to our pack! Now they are snuggling into their new home nicely.

Very clean...staff is friendly and kknowledgeable each dogs story. I've been a few times in search of a Furever dog for my home and the animals go quickly there. The animals are treated nicely and staff walk around calming the barking with treats. So...its not a kennel atmosphere.
I like the way they run it.
Adopt dont shop!

We brought a rather old for getting spayed dog in and she did fabulously!! She didn't want to move much the day we brought her home, much better the next morning and by that evening she was almost back to her usual self. Amazing!! Her incision was so small!! Well approximated and never showed even the slightest bit of redness. Also since she would normally chew on a "hot spot" I was afraid she would bother it. Not a bit :)

The staff at the Gulf Coast Humane Society were the kindest, most efficient, followed up the next day...top notch! Thank you for taking such good care of our beloved 4-legged family member!!

I honestly believe GCHS has as good a staff as any humane society in the state of Florida.Possibly anywhere in the USA!
I personally witnessed employees going out of their way to assist customers far beyond what would be considered acceptable. Far beyond the normal call of duty! I will forever make Gulf Coast Humane Society my first stop whenever I want to adopt a pet! I simply cannot say enough of the staff! Every single employee I had encountered throughout my adoption was a 10!!! Honestly and Period!
Thank you so very much Gulf Coast Humane Society for putting a much needed smile on both my face and my new best friend!

I've read these reviews and to tell you the truth the shelter isn't this bad. The shelter is actually working towards budgets and cuts. I volunteer here and it's the best thing I 've done. It shows how responsible the shelter is and if you get kids involved they will understand responsibilty too.

Came to adopt a dog, and wanted to view the dogs available. Was told to call to make an appointment for an individual viewing based on photos online. I was told I could only view one dog per appointment and the next appointment wasn t until next week.

I m not sure if this is a kill shelter, but it appears to be bad policy if you are trying to get as many dogs in loving homes as possible. It s hard for me not to recommend based on the principle that I want as many dogs adopted as possible.

But customer/volunteer service is severely lacking and there are plenty of shelters that have animals that need loving and won t waste your time.

Very rude staff. All they care about is money and sadly the animals are suffering because of it. I have called about adopting an animal several times and every time the staff are very condescending and not helpful at all. I spoke with someone who seemed nice at first, so I asked for their name so I could ask for them when I called back. The woman stated I AM THE DIRECTOR and I said, great, what is your name? She said uhm no and hung up on me. If this is how they treat people, it worries me how they are treating the animals.

We are fostering a , they were great with setting everything up and paperwork went quick! While fostering they also pay for their food and medical, if you cant afford to adopt please foster and give them a loving home while waiting to be adopted!

We adopted a pet from there and within one week it was sick we took it to their vet their vet said there was no saving the kitten and that we should just put it down. They also said this in front of my 5 year old daughter. So we took it to a specialist the specialist said this cat was never dewormed it was filled up with worms the intestines had folded over and cut off part of the intestine flow. The kitten had to have surgery which cost a pretty penny and the Humane Society did not want to help or do anything about this all they wanted to do was give me a different kitten take this kitten back and put it down. Our specialist said if this kitten was dewormed at the Humane Society this problem would not have happened
