Heaven on earth I have been fortunate enough to visit Harmandir Sahib (Golden Temple) on upto 15 occasions and the spiritual atmosphere is felt as soon as you enter the main gate. It is a great place to reflect on ones own values and morals as the religious sermons promote equality and openness to others as reflected by the 4 gates to signify acceptance from all parts of the world. Take time to enjoy the free meal in the langar hall where wealth ha no value as all persons sit on the floor and eat together regardless of colour creed, religion or wealth. Truly a experience not to be missed!

Sri Harmandir Sahib, also known as Sri Darbar Sahib or Golden Temple, (on account of its scenic beauty and golden coating for English speaking world), is named after Hari (God) the temple of God. The Sikhs all over the world, daily wish to pay visit to Sri Amritsar and to pay obeisance at Sri Harmandir Sahib in their Ardas. Guru Arjan Sahib, the Fifth Nanak, conceived the idea of creating a central place of worship for the Sikhs and he himself designed the architecture of Sri Harmandir Sahib. Earlier the planning to excavate the holy tank (Amritsar or Amrit Sarovar) was chalked out by Guru Amardas Sahib, the Third Nanak, but it was executed by Guru Ramdas Sahib under the supervision of Baba Budha ji. The land for the site was acquired by the earlier Guru Sahibs on payment or free of cost from the Zamindars (landlords) of native villages. The plan to establish a town settlement was also made. Therefore, the construction work on the Sarovar (the tank) and the town started simultaneously in 1570. The work on both projects completed in 1577 A.D. The land for the site was bought by the Guru Ram Das Sahib on payment from the Zamindars (landlords) of native villages.
Guru Arjan Sahib got its foundation laid by a muslim saint Hazrat Mian Mir ji of Lahore on 1st of Magh, 1645 Bikrmi Samvat (December, 1588). The construction work was directly supervised by Guru Arjan Sahib himself and he was assisted by the prominent Sikh personalities like Baba Budha ji, Bhai Gurdas ji, Bhai Sahlo ji and many other devoted Sikhs.
Unlike erecting the structure on the higher level (a tradition in Hindu Temple architecture), Guru Arjan Sahib got it built on the lower level and unlike Hindu Temples having only one gate for the entrance and exit, Guru Sahib got it open from four sides. Thus he created a symbol of new faith, Sikhism. Guru Sahib made it accessible to every person without any distinction of Caste, creed, sex and religion.
The building work completed in 1601 A.D. on Bhadoon Sudi 1st, 1661 Bikrmi Samvat (August/September,1604). Guru Arjan Sahib installed newly created Guru Granth Sahib, in Sri Harmandir Sahib and appointed Baba Budha ji as its first Granthi i.e. the reader of Guru Granth Sahib. After this event it attained the status of Ath Sath Tirath . Now the Sikh Nation had their own Tirath, a pilgrimage center.

The temple is built around a man-made pool (sarovar) that was completed by Guru Ram Das in 1577. Guru Arjan the fifth Guru of Sikhism, requested Sai Mian Mir a Muslim Pir of Lahore to lay its foundation stone in 1589. In 1604, Guru Arjan placed a copy of the Adi Granth in Harmandir Sahib, calling the site Ath Sath Tirath (lit. "shrine of 68 pilgrimages"). The temple was repeatedly rebuilt by the Sikhs after it became a target of persecution and was destroyed several times by the Muslim armies from Afghanistan and the Mughal Empire. The army led by Ahmad Shah Abdali, for example, demolished it in 1757 and again in 1762, then filled the pool with garbage. Maharaja Ranjit Singh after founding the Sikh Empire, rebuilt it in marble and copper in 1809, overlaid the sanctum with gold foil in 1830. This has led to the name the Golden Temple.

Even if winter water feels warm and very clean. 3. Langar (free meal) 4. Service : you can help in kitchen, peel onions, mop floor, clean/collect utensils
Golden Temple or Harminder Singh Gurudwara is an iconic place. The holy worship place for the Sikh community is a must visit place for everyone. This place has a different vibe and energy. The amount of peace and calmness you feel once you step in here can only be experienced and is hard to describe. The temple is open from 3am - 10 pm everyday. Do try the 'langar' served at the Gurudwara. The simple food tastes heavenly.
Best place to visit in Amritsar. It is not a just a place, it is the definition of Sikhism , the way they manage whole thing, the environment of temple's campus is such peaceful and relaxing.. you will definitely love it. Visit once in your life. It was my second visit and still I didn't get bored. I am gonna love it every time.
1. Very holy place and also well managed and maintained place of worship. 2. Looks stunning when lit at night. Hence must see the temple at day as well as night. 3. Place of historical and religious importance. Historical info provided in the temple premised also sheds light on history of temple. 4. Langar /Kitchen serves food and tea (Darjeeling tea) to everyone whosoever visits the temple. 5. We went on Vaisakh and there was big crowd . Tourists and out of the state visitors should avoid the festival days to avoid huge rush and crowd. 6. There are fans for the people who stand in the lines so can get some respite during hot days in summer. 7. Keep a day free to experience the visit to the temple.

There is a lot to be said about India and about it being one of the most spiritual countries. Opinions are divided though and it is always a point of arguing. The Golden Temple of Amritsar and it's surrounding area, however, are not. Here is where you find spiritual India. There is a cloud a magic around the temple which grows more intense the more you approach it. The waiting time is worth it. It is possible to sleep in the temples around, free food is served and people live in a communal agreement of interconnectedness.
Its an excellent place on earth. All are equal, whether it is rich person or poor. The environment here is peaceful and very cool. A lot of people visit this place daily and the staff here are very great who manage the crowd. At langar they provide food for all and its good to see all sitting at one place for langar. Hopefully who ever visit this place definitely fall in love with this place.
