As a published children's author, illustrator and storyteller in schools I wrote to my local public Library activities programmer suggesting I tell stories in the libraries run by Glen Eira council. During a later phone call I enjoyed a positive response from this fine young lady. Here is my follow up letter to thank her.

Dear Reilly,

So nice to finally have a chat with you this morning,

You sound like just the sort of energy we need in community arts. I love what you re doing for Glen Eira and frankly they are lucky to have you.

I d enjoy more of a chat, not just about what we might do together at the Glen Eira libraries but about the interaction in general between councils and people. It can t all be about garbage collection and parking fines. The connection can be positive, creative and life changing. Everything starts at the local level. EVERYTHING.

I could tell you about the 1980s and how we did things in South Australia. What came out of the Adelaide Festival of Arts was to produced young artists and writers that are establish talents now. These kids needed to start somewhere and it's at the Unley Council Library that I got my start in becoming a successful storyteller in 1980 (pictured)

It's been a 38 year career of picture books and fun and my live storytelling shows have made me well known all over Australia yet I live here in the Glen Eira area. WOW ! It's about time I took up my local responsibilities.

I have attached another photo, for your use, that colourfully reflects where I ended up with this career with kids but I ll never forget my humble beginnings, at the the Council Library in Adelaide, where I had an audience of three.

So let me know when you have time for a chat face to face.

I look forward to this

A big thank you to Sarah in the waste department for resolving my situation with collecting my green waste bin. Initially had difficulty with the person who picked up my call as they were not solution orientated however when transferred to Sarah she was able to help to find a solution. She was also very prompt with getting back to me. Much appreciated!

Got a parking fine for work, paid the fine well before due date, a little warning would have been nice, especially in this time of the pandemic. I'm glad I don't live anywhere near this council. Disgusting

The most pathetic council i've ever dealt with. No ownership, zero accountability. House was flooded, zero support. Tried to pay a parking fine on time, now being charged extra, the list goes on.

Since opening in 1975, Glen Eira City Council's Gallery has established a leading profile within the public gallery sector in Melbourne. Located on the ground floor of the historic Glen Eira Town Hall, access to the Gallery is gained through the majestic classically-styled portico on the corner of Glen Eira and Hawthorn Roads, Caulfield.

Council s Gallery features regular curated survey and thematic exhibitions, including the works of emerging contemporary Australian artists. In addition to this, the Gallery also manage the A.M.E Bale Art Award.

Significant exhibitions held in the Gallery include, Open Country: The Murrumbeena Boyds (2015), Louise Paramor: Emporium (2013), Stephen Haley: Somewhere About Now (2012), Robert Baines: A Visible Likeness (2011), Farrell and Parkin: Topography of a Collaborative Mind (2010) and Jane Burton: Eye of the Beholder (2009).

The Gallery is also a popular hire space for local artists and other groups. In addition to assuring an exhibition program rich in diversity and scope, the use of the Gallery as a hire space also provides a forum for local artists to show their work within a professionally equipped space at competitive rates. The floor-to-ceiling panels can be moved to divide the Gallery into a half or full gallery space.

School group visits to the Gallery are welcome upon prior arrangement with the Curator.

The Gallery is wheelchair accessible and there is accessible parking in Council's car park.

Lady on the phone was absolutely useless and didn t care about my complaint at all. Why work in public service if you don t want to help the public? When you call all they will do is handball you to someone else

A large tree branch fell on our car which was parked on our property. The council owns the tree as it is on the nature strip, but refuse to take responsibility. It was not our fault and their response was claim on our insurance. Why should pay the $700 excess for something that wasn't even our fault. Shame on your Glen Eira City Council :(

Please pass on my sincere thanks to your waste management team. In particular:
- the general rubbish truck driver who always waves at my toddler
- the hard rubbish pickup team for prompt service
- the team that replaced my broken wheelie bin without question.

Thanks!

Its inconceivable that an Australian Council office spends taxpayers money pushing the YES vote. The Glen Eira Council should be reminded that they serve all the people and should remain impartial and allow the people to vote for themselves.

No common sense on parking fines. We parked on Centre Road and copped a fine, photos clearly show the sign is 100% NOT visible from our approach. Off to court. What a waste of time and resources. Rather than like your council you hate them. No empathy. I sometimes go out of my way to pick up rubbish off the streets. I have to think twice next time.

3 months later we receive a letter that the council has used their "discretion" and withdrawn the fine. There was no apology. Sorry, but that was meant to take place when we originally objected. There is a level of stress associated with going to court. Process stinks.

It's a local council office, so you know what to expect. Located within the historic Town Hall, which has featured in Open House Melbourne, it also houses an art gallery, theatrette and the public library. Free wifi is a bonus!

Hopeless customer service. Have needed to contact council for a number of reasons over the past 10 years with varying degrees of helpfulness. On the positive the customer service attendants speak English fluently. Last week I phoned customer service twice...was promised a call back but never got one. Called back a week later and spoke to planning department 3 hours later. The Planner clarified height restrictions of property in question but could not explain why council had supported a building that exceeds height limit set out in the Carnegie Structure Plan. She simply said that a report had been completed by a 3rd party and the recommendation was made. It is this department's decision yet they just handball all responsibility. Residents pay wages of these planners and ultimately live with these decisions.
It was never the resident's choice to find themselves living in an Urban Growth Zone...the council could at least find the time and decency to explain their planning decisions. Total lack of confidence in Glen Eira Council

Crooks who weaponise the law to steal money from i...

Crooks who weaponise the law to steal money from innocent people. It is that simple.

The media should look at how local councils in a democratic society such as ours behave. More specifically, how they create by-laws aimed at revenue raising rather than the provision and management of public services.

These scumbags issue traffic infringements at will then conceal their personal identity by hiding behind a number. If they are not doing anything wrong then WHY hide who they are? Where is the accountability of public officials if these officials are nameless unknowns? The citizens are slugged with dodgy fines then burdened with the legal cost of contesting them. In the meantime, the scumbags who issued them are protected and never held accountable for their actions. Police officers and judicial officers (e.g. Magistrates) who are entrusted with upholding the law do not have their identities concealed, why are parking officers employed by councils so special?

This Council only goes to prove that organized crime is live and well in local governments its a shame that the star scale has not got a minus rating, I'm totally and utterly discussed with my in counter and the review process If I had the time and money I would fight them through the courts, disgraceful conduct by a government body

This council has been charging a whole apartment for bins for more than 3 years for a service which they never provided. ( we use private collectors) . When asked if they could provide us with the bins and wanted to get more info , their staff June Pearson, rudely exclaimed that this is not her favourite property and shut me down before I can even ask anything. She dismissed the phone call and handballed me to someone else. What the hell am I paying rates for ? To be spoken to like this ? If I don t pay the rate by the due date , all he ll fire is let loose and these people are getting away by frauding us. Obviously an abuse of power . DisgustIng behaviour

Just read about their predatory practices with parking infringements. Fining parents who legally drop their kids off in the kiss and go drop off spaces. You're lucky you don't get bricks thrown through your doors and windows, that's not a threat, just a statement, I'm in Asia and live in NSW, so if it does happen, it wasn't me.

Sent an email with my car registration number to double check I had paid a parking fine. Tried calling first, didn't get through. Got an automated response back saying it would take up to 10 working days. I understand being busy, but that's a bit ridiculous..

Just make the John Monash Drive especially the front of the Caufield Train Station a as pedestrian crossing "only" and not for taxi lanes only as the taxis is keeping on pulling on and off to that area as well and by not putting a 10 min drop off for train passengers. As that is just the reason and explaination that it is a populated area. Taking and earning from traffic fines you issue to the public only means your are not for the people. You are just giving the public difficulties to access the public transport (train station) as you don't put a drop off area infront of the station.

Glen Eira council has confusing and contradictory parking signs. Parking officers then hide and wait to catch residents who have misread the signs. They target a small number of parking spaces that have for inexplicable reasons slight variations in the parking restrictions to the spaces beside them. This is below the dignity of Glen Eira Council and is just underhand, blatant money making. Rate payers have suffered enough with the continual and excessive construction that restricts movement and traffic flow, and with the chaos that Sky Rail caused. I was loyal and shopped locally, but not anymore, I'd rather drive to Chadstone. To be fined three days wages for misreading a sign designed to confuse and obfuscate is excessive and ridiculous.

They target busy area school, events etc hiding inside the car and taking photos. When there is traffic congestion and its not moving at all and someone sneak out from your car you get issued $165 fine .
Keep it up your hard work

I just received a parking infringement by post regarding stop in an no stop sign area about one months.

I have checked photos, staff or computer may confirmed between "w" and "m". it is not related to us.

I am surprised parking infringement is send by post now a day. it is completely wasted tax payer time.

The nastiest , unfair, vindictive planning head ever. Our nribour, known to him, complained about our fence height AFTER approving it before and during construction - we checked each step of the way - decided the didn t like the colour of the retaining wall after all (that they refused to pay for despite previously agreeing to pay half) so wanted us to rip everything down and install an inferior wood. After refusing, of course, they turned to their council mate. Then ensued two years of hell from this guy, who suddenly refuted previously approved designs, demanded we pay for other planning permits and demanding we pay for all manner of experts to retrospectively attend our site, provide extra documentation etc etc etc. only when I threatened to write to the Ombudsman explaining his actions and how unfair he has been, did he suddenly cancel his further demands, lol of which required us to breach legislative requirements, knowing that we would then have to pay to rectify. An unbelievable experience from a nasty council.
