Coding Dojo has a tough curriculum , but it is all worth it if you can survive the onslaught of material to be learned. I came in with nearly zero to minimal knowledge and now I have gained enough knowledge in the first 6 weeks to carry a website from start to finish (full stack!) using Python, HTML, CSS, and JavaScript! I look forward to my next two stacks.
The instructors here at Coding Dojo are great at what they do and are very passionate about teaching programming.

I had a lot of fun learning new languages alongside people with similar interests as me, and being able to learn things I've really been interested in but didn't know where to start. Although we may have gone down different paths, and will continue to branch off, I won't be able to forget the experience I had here, the relationships I made, the friends I met. I'm excited to use what I've learned to further myself and my life!
When I first heard about the bootcamp, I was excited that there was a form of education that seemed more like how I prefer to learn. I went through multiple stages of anxiety when applying, nervous that I wouldn't be able to get in, nervous it wouldn't be right, nervous I wouldn't do well, nervous I wouldn't fit in. But all my worries melted away when I stepped in the door for my first open house.
Coming into the dojo, everyone treats everyone like an old friend - we all shed that layer of fear, of judgement, and we all help each other push through all the struggles. More than anything, that was the most important thing to me.
I'll never forget these past 3 months. And although we may part, I'll always cherish everyone I've spent that time with.
Coding Dojo truly takes you from knowing nothing to being able to build a web application utilizing both front and back end languages. They teach you crucial aspects like OOP and database usage WITHOUT giving you all of the answers. This was frustrating for some students but I think this helped us become better developers. It forced students to utilize research and outside sources to figure out problems. This is truly what it is like in the industry, therefore it makes you a better dev.
That being said, there were some hiccups as they transitioned to fully online (started at the beginning of Covid-19) but they did give additional resources and retakes to courses to accommodate the issues. I would have preferred 2 languages (more in depth) than grazing over the 3. (Feels like grazing but you do gain ALOT of knowledge) But either way, I do feel confident in multiple languages.
Coding Dojo was a great experience. The Instructors were easy to work with, knowledgeable and the platform contains a lot of content. Out of all the schooling I have done in the past this was the first time that I was waking up in the morning looking forward to going to class. Even though I was self taught in python and JavaScript I found that through the Coding Dojo I was filling in a lot of the gaps in my knowledge that I missed on my own. Coding Dojo also gave me a great overview of different technologies that I would not have, on my own, learned. I highly recommend to anyone looking to get into the field.
I went for a workshop at Coding Dojo and I was shocked! The place was a total mess and smelled like feet (No kidding!).
External monitors were all over the place that I couldn't see the tiny projector they use in the classroom. The instructor seemed knowledgable but the room setup and the way he explained the material doesn't meet my expectations from a coding environment.
I also noticed that the instructor keeps going while there's a loud chatter happening at the back of the room.
I regret the two hours I spent commuting back and forth to attend that workshop.
I recommend other programming schools such as Code Fellows and maybe Galvanize; my experience at both of those schools was amazing!
I had considered attending a coding bootcamp on and off for a year or so and had the fortune of finding out that two of my friends, one with previous coding experience and one without, had recently gone through Coding Dojo. I was apprehensive because of my lack of any previous experience but both recommended the program if I was interested in web development and it's been a wild ride!
I could tell immediately from the open house that I attended that Coding Dojo would be a great place to learn, the staff was very upfront about the expectations from us students and what we, as a cohort, could expect in return. This carried on during the weeks of the program itself as well, the instructors made sure we had the a positive attitude and learning environment so that we were not only committed to our own success but to the success of everyone else going through the program! You'll hear that you "get out what you put in" over and over but it is 100% the truth! But you won't be alone, you'll have the instructors and fellow students to support you! The instructors were awesome - super friendly, knowledgeable, and dedicated to helping us not just master the material but have the confidence to approach new and novel technologies on our own! The platform was always being updated so you know the curriculum is constantly being worked on as well!
I thoroughly enjoyed my time at Coding Dojo and would highly recommend anyone who has an interest in full stack web development to attend one of the open houses! Meet the staff/instructors, ask questions, and hopefully, you'll have the same great experience that I did!
Coding Dojo gave me the appropriate stepping stone to accelerate my career. I came to the Dojo with a computer engineering degree from a top university and almost 3 years of prior experience in the software industry. Needless to say, my engineering program provided very little hands-on coding experience. I needed to stay competitive by doing alot of self learning during my time in industry.
I joined the Dojo with an intent to reinvent my career, be able to code full stack applications in record time, to become more proficient at algorithms and to learn to build products for my startup. The Dojo truly provided an industry leading curriculum, allowing me to master three full stacks in a short time. What sets the Dojo apart is not only the comprehensive and outstanding curriculum, but the overall vibe and community of the learning environment. The Dojo cares about the well-being of its students, providing free food and occasional catered lunches. Weekly sports events also proved to enhance learning and efficiency overall. The people are great and very helpful and instructors and TAs are almost always available to help throughout the program. Instructors are sometimes seen still upgrading course content to ensure the courses are up to date with the latest industry practices. I would even go to say that the program offered at the Dojo is better than my Computer Engineering degree program, as I feel I would have been better prepared for the industry should I have attended the Dojo instead. The Dojo deserves to be accredited, and it is a shame that it is not.
The best educational experience I ve had and I ve attended 4 universities and 2 community colleges. The teachers are extremely knowledgeable and helpful, and I was impressed with the curriculum.
Being able to completely focus on learning to code and not have my time divided with work and different classes was a game changer for me. I felt so productive at the dojo and it was amazing to have the help of my cohort when I got stuck. The 12 hours a day I spent there flew by because I was enjoying what I did so much. It s a lot of work, but extremely rewarding if you re able to put in the hours needed.
I had taken a few classes previously, and that helped not feel as overwhelmed. I recommend doing as much coding and learning before you arrive as possible so it s not as overwhelming and so you can better know if coding is for you. However, don t put boot camp off too long if you know it s the right path for you because you can t find the time to code and learn, which is what I did.
Best decision I ve ever made was to go to Coding Dojo.
I loved my time at the coding dojo. I learned how to learn which is the most valuable of all the skills I learned. I now have motivation and determination to learn other programming languages. There seems to be no obstacle that I cannot get over. I am looking forward to continuing my journey as a coder and learning many more technologies in the future. Now we are all equipped to take on any challenge and conquer and learn by struggling. Thanks coding dojo for the great time and the skill-set to go to the next level of my career, life, and journey. I believe that the program will only get better as the years go by and more tremendous coders join the field. Despite the challenges and the tough moments or moments of discouragement I was trained to handle them and learn to put my skills to work and problem solving skills to work. Now when challenges arise they can be tackled and taken on without looking back and without thinking failure is final. When things don't work there is always a solution that is waiting to be found.
A little bit of my background before we get into the meat of this review. *** feel free to skip the next 2 paragraphs if this doesn't apply to you, or skip to the end for the summary :) ***
So I was in the military as a Medic for 4 years prior to attending college. With that, I'm accustomed to the bootcamp style of training. They threw me into the fire and I managed to come out each time. (dramatic I know)
After that I decided to attend Arizona State University and pursue a Computer Science Degree as I always found myself drawn towards tech and realized the economic shift happening in the current job market. After two years I realized that I was rather unsatisfied with my learning experience to that point and I never really understood what I was leading up to with programming. I decided to take a few online courses and really started to enjoy programming. Web development seemed to stick out to me the most as far as what I saw, but I had little to no structure on what I was learning.
This is where Coding Dojo comes into play. I wanted to get structure and I was tired of the traditional learning environment that I was receiving through my college experience. It works great for some people, but I never felt like I was actually taking anything away from my classes. I looked around for different bootcamps and Coding Dojo's strength through struggle philosophy really struck home with my learning style. I find that I learn better and retain more in a rigorous environment.
From start to finish, Coding Dojo was an intense experience. Every single day you start out doing algorithms to warm your brain up and get you used to solving complex issues, and each day they get harder and harder. After that you will attend a short lecture on your daily topic and then you will start cracking down on assignments until you meet your end of day goal. That may happen by 5pm, but that's not often the case. I have spent plenty of days coding from 6am to 12 at night reaching my end of day assignment, or even getting myself ready for the next day's material.
All of the instructors are very knowledgeable and can help guide you in the right direction as far as HOW to approach a problem, but they will not give you the answers. They want to make you a self-sufficient developer, meaning there are no shortcuts. I would say on average, I put in about 70-90+ hours per week coding. I was generally first in, last out. I graduated with three black belts without any retakes. That being said, I put in significantly more time than anyone else in my program and that's what it's all about.
I'm running out of time today, so I'll cut to the end now. Coding Dojo has given me the tools to succeed as a Full Stack Web Developer and I would recommend it to anyone who can set aside the TIME to do it. There are some people who don't succeed in the same learning environment, but don't let that discourage you. Plenty of people came into this program with an open mind and little to no coding experience and come out on top. I think that if you put in the time and the effort anyone can succeed here.
I attended Coding Dojo Seattle during Summer '18 and I absolutely loved it! I was in the Army for 7 years in an IT role but most recently a licensed massage therapist. I wanted to switch back into the tech field so I started pursuing an undergraduate degree in Computer Science. During my Sophomore year Summer break, I found that Coding Dojo in Seattle accepted the 9/11 GI Bill so I immediately signed up. While I had previous coding and tech experience, CD was not easy. They tell you that you need to spend 70-90 hours a week to be successful, and they aren't lying. During my time there, I saw a direct correlation in the amount of time students spent on the course work and how much their skills progressed. To be successful, you have to be willing to put in the hours before and after the official school day. They told us at the beginning that the goal was not to turn us into experts at any particular skill or stack, but to help us become self-sufficient programmers. This means that when given projects or positions with skills outside of what we already know, we know what we need to do to become proficient at those skills without having to go to school to learn them. At the beginning of the program, it was extremely difficult to learn how to make a fully functioning full-stack website, but by the third stack I knew all the pieces of building a site, it was just a matter of learning the nuances of a different language and tool set. I was able to see real-time this self-sufficiency being built; it worked. The instructors and learning platform are fantastic at making sure you are stretching yourself every single day. Just when you feel like you've grasped a concept, you're presented with new challenges that build off of the old ones. Along with all of the programming languages, frameworks, and tools you learn to build websites, you also learn about how to research and figure out problems on your own; the instructors will NOT hold your hand, but they will help you lead yourself to the answers. You will learn how to work in teams with different people from different backgrounds and how to lean on each other to supplement your understandings. In addition to all of the difficult assignments we did, I have personal and group projects that I would be confident presenting to hopeful employers. During my time there we had Human Resource professionals from different companies come to speak to us as well as professionals in our field giving demonstrations and talks about the industry. I would highly recommend anyone wanting to change careers into web development or just learn new skills to immerse yourself into this bootcamp, just be prepared to work your butt off.
I came to the Coding Dojo with zero coding experience. I have been a stay at home mom for nearly a decade and with my kids about to start school, I really wanted to find a way to contribute financially. I have a few friends in the web development industry who thought I should give coding a shot and I am beyond happy I listened.
I LOVE the Coding Dojo. It really is a get out what you put in program. The instructors are knowledgeable, friendly, and want you to succeed, so if you are putting the effort in they are working to help. Be prepared to work, but it is more than worth your time.
So far everyone I have met at Coding Dojo has been very helpful and an asset to my education in learning computer coding. I'm almost half way through the 14 week boot-camp and every day I'm learning new things, as well as, reinforcing those that I've learned from the days before. Parts are easy, others are difficult, but the instructors, TA's and even other students have been helpful in my improvement.
Good curriculum that will help new people alongside with some more experienced devs. Amazing team of Instructors and Technical assistants. Highly recommend!
One of the most intense programs I've ever been apart of. You get what you put in and after putting in 90 hours a week I was happy with my results. It's a ton of information in a very short period of time; you just need to come ready and be prepared if you want to do well. I would do it all over again. From where I started to where I am now, I could barely believe everything I had learned. The instructors were amazing and thorough, they prepare you well and the content is extensive and precise. I would highly recommend Coding Dojo to anyone thinking about attending a boot camp.
My experience at the dojo was more than I expected. It doesn't get any better than being able to work on projects with other coding dojo students and struggling as well as figuring out the concepts together and go through the whole program together. I definitely am going to continue studying the platform with the other stacks that I did not do during the bootcamp. Coding dojo has made a great experience for me and allowed for a great environment to learn the content. I enjoyed the platform and the projects that was involved with the program. All the concepts helped me better understand the fundamentals of the web. I made some good networks with the coding dojo as well as the connections made with the students who were at the dojo going through the same experience with me. It was great to work with people who wanted to pursue similar goals as me in learning web development and coding as a team. Something that my experience lacked was the bootcamp life which was because of my location and having to travel back and forth a long way to home. But that didn't make my experience any worse. It was just as good if anything and I am glad I made this leap to do it.
I've wanted to learn web development for a few years now, simply because I didn't like the look or feel of an application that I used everyday at work. I knew going to a traditional college or university wasn't a possibility because of work and a child on the way so I looked into coding bootcamps. Being a veteran I was very intrigued. When the pandemic hit there was an opportunity to attend an out of state bootcamp virtually so I jumped at it. I have to say going in I was one of those people who was very skeptical about learning such a complex skill in what seems like a very short amount of time, but Coding Dojo changed all of that. Even though I'm still in the early stages of my bootcamp, I feel like I'm picking up the information and I'm learning a lot about myself. The 20 minute rule has been a big help in building upon my problem solving skills. Coding Dojo isn't teaching me how to code...they're teaching me to think like a developer.
I loved Coding Dojo's graded, balanced approach to learning: do Black Belt challenges if you can, work on basics if you're not there yet. I felt like there was always room to grow but plenty of support. Instructors were mature and good natured, and didn't micromanage us. The approach was: learn some principles in lecture, then go code and collaborate. I started as a complete beginner but built three full stack application projects by the end of the bootcamp (in Python, MERN, and C#). Instructions are clear, instructors are fair, and you're in a position to learn as much as you can handle--whether you're a newbie or someone with industry experience.
Before coming to Coding Dojo I was a high school teacher in Hawaii. While working in the classroom, I had so many ideas for web applications but I had no way to make them a reality. Codecademy and Udemy only scratched the surface and didn't teach me the bigger concepts involved in creating a fully functional app. I decided that I wanted to learn how to code in a more formal setting so I did some research on my options. Going back to a university was an option, but would take too long (about 3 years or more) and would be too expensive. I heard about software bootcamps and started to look at Seattle, since I knew it was a great city for tech. I chose Coding Dojo because the staff was so friendly, and I was impressed by the three full-stack curriculum. Now that I'm graduated and have received my black belt, I have created multiple functioning apps and am confident that I can make many of my ideas into a full-functioning product. Coding Dojo was a great environment to learn how to code. I have made so many friends and have such great aspirations for my future as a software developer!
I graduated college with an engineering degree but I didn't have a lot of programming experience. The Coding Dojo in Bellevue was a great place for me to learn web development. Their primary focus on the education of students, and they have a custom learning platform that really helps keep you on pace. It is a lot of work, I spent ~10hrs a day at the Dojo, but it is rewarding.
I had a wonderful experience with the Coding Dojo. I went into the bootcamp with zero previous experience as a coder, yet, felt very confident in my abilities after completing the course. I enjoyed how friendly all of the staff members were and their willingness to help was amazing. The career services element was also very beneficial as well.
Obviously, with the course being only 14 weeks, there were additional things I wish I had learned, but considering the course teaches 3 full-stacks in that short amount of time, the structure and layout was very efficient and effective.
Great platform for learning and good communication from the very start. The teaching is hands on, the assignments and exams are challenging, and the student support (TA's, career services, admissions, and instructors) are readily available to help.
Coding Dojo transformed my career. I was a school teacher before joining the program and now, a week after finishing the program, I got a contract job offer from a small startup. While my future career trajectory will depend on how much work I personally put in, Coding Dojo was the stepping stone that helped get my foot in the tech industry.
the quality of instruction is great. very effective learning tools that give you a good amount of information while leaving some information for the student to look up themselves which is a great skill to have in the world of coding.
This was my third coding bootcamp but first full-time virtual learning experience. With previous experience learning HTML, CSS, Javascript and SQL, I was humbled by their unique approach to each stack. The online platform was informative, concise and methodical. The assignments reiterated over lecture material while allowing creative freedom. The belt exams were challenging and engaging. Their Virtual Workplace made it easy to connect, ask questions and learn from the national community which was super cool and not possible at previous in-person bootcamps. I was a little skeptical at first but I learned, this was the type of environment for me.
Some of the resources they offered that set me up for success were video recordings of every lecture in each stack, demos for challenging assignments when we requested, unintimidating support system of teachers and TA's, just enough guidance to figure out what questions I needed to ask and the opportunity to succeed to live a life serving a greater purpose.
Looking forward to continue learning, sharing and building towards a brighter future!
Honestly I loved being a part of the coding dojo family, I tried it back in 2016 and life got in the way. Coming back in 2020 the school worked with me, stated I still had an unused balance from my previous enrollment and helped me with my VA benefits to get enrolled. I had 4 different instructors, each focusing on a specific stack, so I had a wide range of teaching styles. Every teacher was very personable and well knowledged, they work with the students and definitely invest in you. I made real connections through this school that I plan on maintaining.
Coding Dojo is an intense but worthwhile experience. You learn a lot in a very short time and there will be days where you look back two weeks ago and realize how much you've done. It's a lot of work but the satisfaction of creating things every day is worth it.
"My experience here as a student at Coding Dojo was definitely challenging and humbling but overall a great experience; A mental journey I didn t think I would go through but an outcome of understanding something completely 360 from me and my knowledge. I was previously in the Marine Corps before attending Coding Dojo with a background in Accounting and Diplomatic Security and very basic HTML/CSS knowledge. Immediately we knew the school would require a lot of attention, time sacrifice, and time management. Most days would range easily putting in 12 hour days, 5-7 days a week.
I didn t fully know what world I would be getting myself into but I knew from dabbling with Code Academy and enjoying it, that I wanted to become a full-time Programmer. The instructors/staff are incredibly nice and helpful. The instructors and TA s are caring and patient; they do their best to help you understand the material. Bending over backwards and sitting with you for as long as needed to help you understand what you re doing. I really appreciated when they would record the lectures and demonstrations so I can go back on the material for live examples and code with the videos. I have struggled a lot during the school but I see it as constant room for growth and that there is a lot to be learned in Programming and you shouldn t give up.
Multiple assignments and class work a day plus algorithms will feel heavy and challenging. But I believe with struggle comes strength and some points you ll question it all. And learning and soaking in the material feels quick but you ll soon realize you know more than you give yourself credit for.
The implementation of the 20-minute rule for working on your own, then asking a TA is a great push to becoming a self-sufficient developer. Students will grow to need less supervision and how to find the answers instead of having the answers given to them.
Coding Dojo helped give me the skills and understanding for walking into the massive realm of web/software development and that there is much more to be learned, and in many different languages. And if I wanted to learn a different language, it s doable. It makes me eager to continually and constantly learn as an aspiring self-sufficient developer."
Let me start with, I am a person who had little to none experience with writing any sort of code. If you are focused and committed and please ask questions if you do decide to enroll before and especially during the course, because the instructors will help you! they are patient and they reinsure you and want you to succeed Shout out to Phil and Saurabh! and the TA's Chris and Daisy and to Jori from Admin. I'm about half way through and I can honestly say I've put in 80 + hours a week, but after you accomplished what you just learned in a project you are working on.... the feeling is amazing! and you just want to continue to learn. This is intense but with practice, practice, practice and ask questions you can be very successful. I wish you luck and hope this helped!
I had the pleasure of working with Sadie, George, Brendan, and Cody as my instructors. All 4 of them were great instructors and made sure we, the students, understood all of the content in order to succeed in the field of web development. The Dojo is a very fast past environment filled with difficult content to grasp at first. Having such great instructors, and TAs, made the learning process great overall. I d recommend Coding Dojo to anyone in a heartbeat!
I highly recommend you choose a different coding boot-camp. I attended the onsite and had a horrible experience. They cram 2 classrooms into one small room with the instructors trying to talk over each other. There is only 1 hour of lecture where they literally just go through an assignment piece by piece. The instructors are almost all just graduates of the coding boot-camp that cant get a job elsewhere.
The one positive was the learning platform(at first) the web fundamentals and python section was absolutely wonderful. I was able to get 97% and then 98% on my first two exams where most fail. The MEAN stack was horrendous though. When I contacted them about it they said "sorry it's not finished yet we are still working on it" SO why are you taking my money for it then?
Oh and don't get me started on the communication times. I would email and not get a response for 3-8 days. consistently. Please don't waste your money here. There are plenty of better alternatives.
It definitely throws a lot at you at once, so be prepared to work hard if you go here. But I have learned so much in such a short time. It's been amazing.
This was the most effective way that I found to learn web programming as quickly as possible. I had tried studying on my own for months and struggled with what to focus on and how to effectively absorb new material. I benefitted greatly with the structure and materials provided by the bootcamp. However, you *must* come into the bootcamp with as much advance knowledge as you can, in order to keep up and and to be able to understand/absorb the material. I recommend studying javascript and python and getting as comfortable as you can with it before attempting the bootcamp.
In 3 and a half months I learned HTML, CSS, JQuery, BootStrap, Pythong (Flask and Django), Mean stack, and Ruby on Rails. You not only learn a lot by coding 10-12 hours a day you also learn how to read documentation and use stack overflow to help solve coding problems. Today I am starting a job an a contractor for Microsoft using the mean stack. I found a job in less than a month and a half after finishing the program
Signed up for this bootcamp on a whim and made the best decision of my life. I found my passion for coding and development with the help of the amazing support from the various instructors. Each day I was challenged and pushed to my highest potentials while learning valuable skills that I can carry on through my new career. 10/10 recommend for anyone who has little to no background in coding!
Amazing Experience with Amazing Instructors and Amazing Platform. Definitely not easy but with the design of the Platform, the Instructors and the Program, it is a Great Choice for prospective Students especially Veterans.
Coding Dojo was a great experience and a wonderful introduction to web programming. Over 14 weeks, my cohort and I went through the LAMP, MEAN, and Ruby on Rails stacks. I came in to the boot camp not really knowing what to expect and was surprised by the amount I was able to absorb in such a short period.
The platform for each stack was well designed. There is always a TA or instructor available to help. The boot camp encouraged us to expand knowledge outside of the platform as well. We created our own projects, had hackathons, and worked daily on algorithms.
To prospective students It s not for everyone. At the end of the day, the camp doesn t thoroughly teach any language, but it does provides all the necessary tools. It surrounds you with a great environment and motivated students. If you are willing to put in the work, Coding Dojo could be an excellent opportunity.
(Note: Prior to my Coding Dojo Experience, I had only taken a C++ course which I don't really remember and didn't really understand much because they were concepts and theory.)
This was a really rewarding experience for me. I definitely grew as a person and as a developer over our 14 week course. It was an amazing experience and I am glad I took a leap of faith in Coding Dojo and myself. I dropped everything, moved 1100 miles and learned a lot. I learned how to problem solve, I learned a lot about all the technologies in the industry and I learned a lot about myself. I really appreciate the connections I made throughout coding dojo and the friends I made in my cohort.
I took LAMP, MEAN, and Ruby on Rails and because Coding Dojo gave us the opportunity to learn 3 stacks, I got a feel for what languages I like. I'm excited to continue learning more on my own and Coding Dojo left me with a confidence that I can continue learning on my own and pick up new languages. The instructors were always there for us to answer our questions. And the career advisors are extremely helpful and care for every one of us.
Shoutout to Nikki B and Speros! Nikki is the best person ever! Funniest jokes. Much enthusiasm. So charismatic. And Speros: Awesome demos. Very helpful. Much friend. Wow. Kris works here too.
best learning experience I have had the opportunity to be a part of. I had very little knowledge in programming before I started at coding dojo, and when I first started, the concepts that were being introduced were very unfamiliar to me. by the third of fourth week, programming was a lot let confusing to me, even with topics I was not familiar with yet. If you are thinking about attending Coding Dojo, just know that you will always feel welcomed, and you will never feel as if you are unable to receive the help you need.
I had a great time, made friends and connections. The learning platform the school uses contains more information than you'd expect so you'll be learning from them long after you graduate. The teachers and TAs are helpful and knowledgeable.
Came in with no HTML and CSS experience and very little Python experience. Quickly got up to speed with their learning platform that really does an amazing job of teaching you the steps. The instructors are absolutely fantastic and collaborate with you using the Socratic method of teaching where they help you find the answer by asking questions you know the answer to while guiding you to the right place.
