Amazing !! Dr. Gary Lai is a very caring and I love visiting him. He makes you feel very comfortable and goes out of his way to explain to you best practice son how to improve your vision. Also he ha a very strong general knowledge therefore his conversations are very interesting.
I've been seeing Dr. Lai for a couple of years now. His exams are thorough and detailed. He listens carefully to whatever concerns you are having and takes the time to explain things. They have a great selection of glasses and sunglasses. I highly recommend giving his office a try.
Always enjoy talking with Dr. Gary Lai - I always learn something new because he takes the time to explain things. Always does a fantastic job of finding the right prescription. A few years back, I went to a big vision center vendor and ended up getting a prescription that was slightly blurry (and therefore highly annoying). Getting the right prescription is really critical and I always go back to Eyeworks to get it done right.
Great friendly staff. They are taking good measures to sanitize and clean every single surface that customers or staff touch. Kudos to the people working through these crazy times to provide great service!
Dr. Lai was very calm and pleasant which created a very relaxing experience. He seemed very knowledgable. The staff were very courteous and went the extra mile to see that I was scheduled as soon as possible, calling me several times as soon as they had opening. I am very pleased with the whole experience.
As a long-time customer of Eyeworks, I would highly recommend them for both eye exams and glasses. Dr. Lai is very thorough in his exams and provides clear explanations regarding potential eye-related issues. In my last visit, the office staff was very careful in following their Covid-19 prevention protocols, as well as taking time at the end to go my invoice and making sure all of my questions were answered.
Would be 3 stars but the doctors are the key to the need. Customer service is bad, online appointments are not worth using, and won't ship contacts to your home, requiring yet another visit.
I am from out of state and visiting family in the area. I needed some specific nose pads for my glasses which are only available from retailers that carry the brand. Eyeworks of San Mateo went out of their way to help me, knowing I will probably not be back as a regular client. I appreciate their help. Thanks to them!

We have been patients of Dr. Lai's for years and would not want to go anywhere else! Both my husband and I tried many other optometrists and Dr. Lai and his staff have outstanding professional knowledge, they are efficient and appropriately priced. Their inventory selection of frames is extensive and ranges from classic to modern and fashionable.

My husband had his eyecheck and purchased a pair of glasses there in December. The helper said the glasses should arrive in about 2 weeks since it is around holiday season. We have waited till 1/19/18 and I called to follow up. Ms. S said she will definitely call me on 1/23 to check with the lab but she never. Then I called back to follow up with the helper who helped my husband to choose the glasses and he said someone texted me already about the glasses but in fact, nobody did. He was very unfriendly, with attitude and mumble about the reasons for the delay and said the glasses will be ready by end of last week or early this week. Again, nobody calls. Such a long delay with no follow up phone call. It is a horrible experience!

Well run operation, have been going to Eyeworks for 4 or 5 years. The husband and wife optometrist team are very personable, always taking extra time to get to know you. They have recently hired a new optometrist staff member and she is equally personable and efficient and getting you in and out quickly.
Glasses and contacts tend to be on the expensive side, but the glasses team in the front are very knowledgeable to help find the right glasses. So you get what you pay for.
Really great Experience everytime. I had 20-20 vision till my mid 30s, never thought I would need glasses or contacts. But in the last ten years things started to blur and I finally broke down and went to a optometrist, got my first glasses but although the glasses improved my vision everything seemed to be at an angle. Needless to say I didn t wear my glasses all that much! A couple years later my wife took me to eyeworks where Dr. Lai detected my astigmatism, now I wear my glasses all the time and the world is crystal clear.
Doctor Lai considers every aspect and detail in the eye exam thoroughly. He is very patient with all the questions. He provides detailed information but more importantly put things into contexts so that the patient can more easily understand the situations, influences, and considerations. The staff are all helpful, friendly, and efficient.

He really gets to know you and i've been able to get in when i had a need for a quick exam as well.

Third year as a patient of this office. Originally made an appointment because of its location right downtown and it being open on Saturdays. Lucky me! Turns out they have awesome staff.
Dr. Lai is very friendly and knows his stuff. He's always comprehensive and I never feel rushed. He answers all of my questions and is familiar with the latest research out there. I definitely trust his recommendations. Also great to see his office is outfitted with the latest and greatest equipment.
The second part of the appointment is always a highlight. Mitch is super knowledgeable about frames, lenses, fitting, style, etc. I always leave feeling like I've got the best out there.
Good doctor but bad, incompetent customer service. I called in to notify them that I'd been given the incorrect glasses prescription. The receptionist insisted that it was correct and I was wrong. I argued back and forth with her until I decided to just give her the benefit of the doubt. Ended up getting my glasses and can't see through them. Thanks, receptionist.

I've had three stellar customer service experiences at Eyeworks - the first was with Dr. Lai when I needed to get my eyes checked and order new contacts. He's so friendly and actually takes the time to explain things to you. The front desk staff was also very helpful in guiding me to the best decision about how to use my insurance (contacts vs. saving it for glasses) to save myself some money. When my contacts were ready for pickup they notified me by text (very convenient). Then when I went back to pick out glasses, the young lady who helped me choose a pair out of the many stylish pairs they have made the whole experience fun and efficient. I loved her enthusiasm - I felt like I was there with a friend helping me pick out the best pair for me. Eyeworks will be my optometric center of choice for a long time! Thank you! =)

Dr. Lai has been the 'keeper of my vision' for about 10 years. He and his staff have always been top notch and I highly, highly recommend anyone who is looking for an Optometrist to go check Eyeworks of San Mateo out.
The most terrible experience ever. They would not be pleasant enough to get an appointment for you. The moment they hear you would do a frame selection and not eye exam and they won t make money out of it they were not considerate and said appointments are not available . Even with Covid all they can think of is money and inconveniencing customers. I understand it s a business but a lil compassion or flexibility will go a long way in the service industry and politeness too. I would never recommend such a place to anyone. They don t even have confidence in their own frame inventory that the customer would like something. Most ridiculous store ever .

Dr. Lay besides being very competent is a great communicator, treating his patients as friends.
Caring Dr., great team. I come all the way from San Jose, would have no one else take care of my eyes. Dr. Lai takes the time to do a very thorough examination, including asking general questions (so, how have you been) that may uncover other health issues you may have that have a vision impact. I totally subscribe to this more holistic approach.
The staff are attentive and willing to go the extra mile to make your experience as enjoyable as possible.
I'm pretty frustrated at the lack of customer service from the front desk here. I wanted to get some contacts online from a brand I used before going to eyeworks and called to update my prescription. The front desk said I can't until I get trials first because I haven't tried them yet. But I told her I had and they are the exact dimensions as my prescribed contacts. I also mentioned that Even the "prescribed" contacts that are currently on my Eye Works prescription are there because my doctor just asked me what I used before and put that on the paper. I never tried them on in the eye works office.
So then the front desk says my doctor isn't in until 5 days from now. So I ask her "why do I have to wait until my Dr. Is in to get a trial pair?" "Well because it's your Dr. And uh you had her before." Really? She didn't even offer another solution. So I ask her for another Dr. So I can simply pick up some trials and she made an excuse that everyone is busy until Tuesday. Not true.
I have already referred 3 of my employees to Eye Works, but will let them know if this and will be looking for a new location.
When there are so many competitors in walking distance I'd think they would value their customers and be a bit more accommodating.
I thoroughly enjoyed my experience at this office! The staff was very welcoming, friendly, and knowledgeable, they were efficient and professional. I really enjoyed speaking with the doctor, and he was very personable and made me feel at ease, and was so kind to answered additional questions about something my mother had requested. I felt the examination was very thorough, any additional testing and charges were thoroughly explained, and it was fun. Probably the best experience I ve ever had at an eye appointment!
Other optometrists had written things in my file and never told me- when they sent the files over to his office he discussed them with me. He is patient, makes sure things are done right, and makes the appointment the best it can be. Best optometrist ever.
