I contacted equip for equality 2 months ago for help. I got two phone calls from them interviewing me to see if they would help me. I was terminated from my mental health services in retaliation for making a complaint. I believe I am being discriminated against. Equip for equality told me they would be getting back to me. That was two months ago. I contacted them yesterday. They now say sorry for not getting back to me. They tell me to call the division of mental health in Illinois for help with my complaint. In other words, they did absolutely nothing for me. I am left without mental health services and they had me waiting all this time for help. I contacted them in the past and they were useless then too. Don't rely on this place for help. They will just have you waiting to find out they are doing nothing for you. And the state lists them as a place that can help you with your grievance with your mental health center. They don't help with anything. You can't get help in this state.

I was talking to a lawyer from Equip for Equality for a whole year now. When it came time to doing any substantive work they refused and told me to hire a lawyer. They are unwilling to do any work or see a case through to completion. They are willing to give advice so I have found them to be better than nothing. Just don't expect much.

They told me to file internal complaints and if i wanted a lawyer i'd have to get one myself. I don't know how... That's why I went to them for help. All they did was give me links that didn't help. I begged for help, some direction, anything. I don't understand, I told them I don't understand but they said they don't have the resources to help me. People like me don't have anyone helping them, if they won't help me, who will? I don't know what to do. I don't understand

EFE is a wonderful organization that beautifully resolved an issue that I was having. I suspect that those giving bad reviews did not present strong arguments/examples of discrimination or were not truly disabled as defined by law. My situation was a clear violation of the Americans With Disabilities Act and I had proper documentation supporting disability. Attorney that unrepresented me (LA, you know who you are) took the extra mile to assist me. If I am ever in position to financially support this wonderful organization, it would make me very happy.

Heard about them through a referral from another lawyer who was too busy to take on casework. Just like the other lawyers I tried contacting, they are also too scared to help with a disability discrimination case I have been hopelessly trying to file against a former employer for the last two years.

Had two phone calls, provided details and then they disappeared because just like everybody else, they also want to avoid people with autism.

Equip for Equality actually discriminates against the very people that need their help the most. Very ineffective, condescending, racist, inept and unethical attorneys. EFE should not be listed as a place that will help the developmentally disabled as the bottom line is the developmentally disabled really have no rights in Illinois.

Shortly after I wrote this review, EFE sent an email asking how they could help me. I never asked them to help me. My 68 year old developmentally disabled brother's civil rights continue to be violated by Orchard Village but since he is non-verbal, he has no rights according to EFE. Another reason why Illinois will remain one of the worst states for services it provides to the developmentally disabled.

I have contacted them for help for disability discrimination at work and they gave me vauge answers and little information to even help myself in this case. I suspect they were discriminating against me for being muslim. Of course they possibly think I am arab or black too not sure. They said they dont have resources to help in my case which would be very simple to resolve.

About Equip for Equality

Equip for Equality: Advancing the Civil Rights of People with Disabilities

Equip for Equality is a non-profit organization that has been working tirelessly to advance the civil rights of people with disabilities since 1985. The organization provides legal services, public policy advocacy, self-advocacy support, monitoring and training to ensure that people with disabilities have equal access to opportunities and are treated fairly in all aspects of life.

Legal Services

Equip for Equality's legal team is dedicated to protecting the rights of people with disabilities through litigation, advocacy and education. The team provides free legal services to individuals who have experienced discrimination or abuse based on their disability. They also work closely with community organizations and government agencies to promote policies that protect the rights of people with disabilities.

Public Policy Advocacy

Self-Advocacy Support

The self-advocacy program at Equip for Equality empowers individuals living with disabilities by providing them tools they need to advocate effectively on their own behalf. Through workshops, training sessions and other resources, participants learn how to navigate complex systems such as healthcare or education while advocating effectively.

Monitoring

Equip for Equality monitors facilities such as nursing homes or mental health institutions where individuals living with disability may be vulnerable. This ensures compliance by these facilities regarding regulations set forth by law so as not discriminate against those who live there because they have a disability.

Training

The training program at Equip For Equality offers educational opportunities designed specifically around issues related to disability rights. These trainings are available both online as well as in-person sessions throughout Illinois which cover topics like employment discrimination laws or accessibility requirements under ADA (Americans With Disabilities Act).

Conclusion

In conclusion, Equip For Equality is an essential resource in advancing civil rights protections afforded under law towards those who live daily lives impacted by a disability whether it be physical or mental impairment(s). Their work has helped countless numbers of individuals achieve greater independence while ensuring equal access across all areas including housing accommodations; employment opportunities; healthcare services; transportation options among others which can often be overlooked without proper representation from organizations like this one!
