El Chaparral Mexican Restaurant Reviews

45 minutes for a 15 minute wait.
Overall: Food was so-so. Cheap, very oily cheese on top of enchiladas. Puddles of oil. However, the bean soup was very good. Dirty bathrooms.

I have been going to El Chaparral since I was in high school which is going on 20 years now. I ve always had a good experience but when I went tonight I was beyond impressed with our service! Jose Luis was our server and he was fantastic. He took care of us before we could even ask for anything. The place was packed and he was very attentive to every customer he had.

I feel like I m on candid camera. Is this the same place that has all of these great reviews? Ambiance and wait staff were excellent. Thank you! You were terrific! But the food? Yikes. Chips were so stale you almost couldn t eat them (and therefore we didn t) the chicken was so dry and overcooked even the sauce it was sitting in couldn t soften it up and the steak tacos so overdone they were like chewing gum. I guess we should ve had some margaritas to help it all go down.

I wish our experience warranted a better review however this evening, it was just so-so.

It was quite busy and there was a bit of a wait but that was to be expected. Once seated, we were greeted right away. Our server was very polite and our glasses never went empty.

The food was just okay. The husband ordered beef fajitas and I ordered chicken enchiladas. Both were greasy and the accompanying beans and rice looked and tasted a bit old.

It was quite disappointing as we have enjoyed prior visits; we may revisit when they are not as busy.

I am not a fan of Mexican food. It makes it even more complicated as there are so many in Texas/San Antonio. I m from the east and have only encountered one Mexican restaurant not far from Glen Mills Pennsylvania. My all-time favorite. I ve driven past El chaparral Many times. Covid complicated it for me To dine. Last week was excruciating cold here in Texas. But today was a gorgeous day and I decided to venture out just to get out of my house. So I stopped at El chaparral. My waiter Chris was phenomenal and much to my surprise I love this place and love the food. I had the Carlos special and it hit the spot.I will be leaving Texas in three months and I will surely come back before I leave. Without a doubt the best Mexican food place in all of San Antonio.

Amazing food and great staff overall. Mrs Ruby at the entrance was amazing from the beginning till the end. Mrs Ruby was a total sweetheart. She took our party head count(big party), let us get any drinks from the bar area, and let us wait for the rest or our party while having our drinks in a waiting area section. She kept us updated at all times on our waiting time. She then handed our party to the area waiter, where Jeremy took great care of the entire party. Both Jeremy and Ruby checked up on the entire party when leaving and made sure we had a great time. Thanks Ruby, we had a great time!!

The ambiance was great and the staff were very accommodating to our large party (20+) with small children. The food was good nothing to complain about. Good drinks. Clean restrooms. I didn't like the chips very stale and the queso we ordered tasted powered . But nothing horrible and I'd go again.

My family has been regulars at this restaurant for 35 years. Every time one of my kids comes home to visit they want to go to Chaparral. To us it's quintessential Tex-Mex! Just doesn't get any better than this!

We're not "Regulars" at El Chaparral but every time we've eaten there has been a pleasurable experience. The food is very good and the service is above reproach. This is a popular spot for locals and can get crowded (which is one reason we're not Regulars). Family friendly atmosphere.

The bean soup is amazing. I recommend the Texas Enchildas. My wide ordered a taco salad and it was served not even half full. For the price and for a meal, we felt disappointed with the taco salad. This restaurant is usually much better.
