About Duke Youth Academy for Christian Formation
Duke Youth Academy for Christian Formation: Nurturing Young Minds with Faith and Knowledge
For almost two decades, the Duke Youth Academy for Christian Formation (DYA) has been a beacon of hope and inspiration for young people seeking to deepen their faith and knowledge. With a mission to nurture the spiritual growth of students, DYA has served nearly 900 students over the years, providing them with an enriching experience that combines academic rigor with spiritual formation.
At DYA, students are immersed in a vibrant community that practices baptism, hospitality, prayer, worship, and word. The academy's programs are designed to help young people develop a deeper understanding of their faith while also equipping them with the skills they need to become leaders in their communities.
One of the unique aspects of DYA is its close relationship with Duke Divinity School. Countless Divinity students, faculty members, and administrators have contributed to shaping this vibrant community over the years. This partnership has allowed DYA to offer its students access to some of the most respected scholars in theology today.
In its final year of operation (2019), DYA continued to bear witness to the practices that grounded its work. While it may no longer be accepting new applicants or hosting on-campus events as it once did before due to COVID-19 pandemic restrictions; however; curated programs and resources on this page serve as an ongoing commission from Duke Divinity School's commitment towards nurturing young minds through Christian formation.
The academy's curriculum is designed around three core themes: Scripture & Theology; Church History & Tradition; and Ministry & Leadership Development. Through these themes, students explore topics such as biblical interpretation, theological ethics, liturgy and sacraments while also learning about church history from early Christianity through modern times.
DYA offers several different programs throughout the year including summer institutes for high school juniors/seniors who want an intensive experience during which they can explore their faith more deeply while also preparing themselves for college life ahead. Additionally there are weekend retreats throughout fall/spring semesters where participants can engage in small group discussions led by experienced facilitators who help guide conversations around topics like vocation discernment or social justice issues relevant today.
The academy's commitment towards nurturing young minds extends beyond just academics though - it also includes opportunities for service projects both locally within Durham area or internationally through mission trips abroad where participants can put into practice what they've learned about serving others selflessly without any expectation in return except love itself!
Overall if you're looking for an opportunity that will challenge you intellectually while deepening your faith at same time then look no further than Duke Youth Academy!
