Boys in the Dublin Literary Pub Crawl really go out of their way to make your time enjoyable. Mind you, it s 2.5 hours, so it better be enjoyable. I would recommend this tour to both literature lovers (I said lovers, not snobs) and those completely clueless (yes, even those illiterate). This is not a lecture tour, this is indeed living Dublin through some of the greatest works in literature. And the beer at each location, well, that s just the bonus.

Please note, the tour guides are very talented actors. You will feel as if you re in a theater while standing in front of Trinity College and looking them act out one of the scenes from their list. Priceless, especially if it happens to be raining outside. I ve got to say though, I was tempted to shout out a thing of two, just to see if it would throw them off guard, but then, I enjoyed it too much to risk being kicked out.

So here s my checklist:

Learn something new: CHECK
Laugh (actual LOL): CHECK
Pompously nod your head like you know what they re talking about: CHECK
Visit pubs not on tourist list of Dublin: CHECK
Be relaxed and have a good time even if touring alone: CHECK
Drink beer: CHECK (actually, a must)
Take pictures (it s encouraged): CHECK

Entertaining and informative. Even if you like a pint and don't know much about Irish literature, or you can quote Joyce and Wilde and don't touch a drop, you'll have a great time. Of course if you like both pubs and prose, you'll hit the sweet spot with this fun, witty, and thoroughly enjoyable tour through some of Dublin's literary and cultural history -- and its pubs! Our guides Frank and Finbar were terrific. If you haven't heard Godot in an Irish accent prepare to understand it on a whole new level. Fun and funny, and you'll learn a thing two. Pay attention -- there may be a t-shirt prize for the ending quiz. Highly recommended.

If you love books and beer, this pub crawl is for you! Two entertaining and knowledgeable actors guide you through central Dublin, stopping at points of interest and pubs along the way, all the while providing facts of interest and recreating scenes from some key Dublin literary works. Their acting was incredible and really brought the literature to life! My friend and I agreed that this was the best tour we'd ever done! For 13 euros, it is a steal.

Colm Quilligan is an outstanding actor cum storyteller cum impressionist cum comedian.
This has to be the must do tour for anyone spending an evening in Dublin.
Don't worry you get plenty of time to drink.
But as a bonus you get to hear some wonderful anecdotes and nuggets of information about some of the towering giants of literature produced by Dublin.
I like most have only heard and read the usual suspects, but it's always good to learn about some new ones not as popular but probably as significant for Irish literary scene.
Colm keeps you occupied for 2.5 hours (and you can set your watch by the start and stop time, very impressed). A couple of younger colleagues join him to act out little dialogues. You get to visit four famous pubs (no spoilers here in terms of names) and enough time to drink and indulge in trivia.
His enactment of Oscar Wilde writing about his visit to a Colorado silver mining town in the backdrop of the beautiful Trinity College was a personal favorite of mine.
If you like to drink and have even the remotest intererst in literature, this is a must do. Even if you just drink, it's not a bad.
And for 13 euro it's a downright steal!

I did this pub crawl as a backpacker fresh out of college in 1997 and took my wife in 2019. This is a great way to wind down from a full day of touring the city with a much more engaging and entertaining literary history lesson with some very funny actors. I read Waiting for Godot in high school and didn't realize how hilarious it was until this outfit performed it in 97. The beer stops along the way are also a great venue to meet fellow travelers, exchange tips on your trips and itineraries, and if you're a solo backpacker like I was, maybe to take the advice to throw your bus itinerary to the wind and stick your thumb out on the open road, where you'll have nothing to declare but your genius.

We had the great pleasure of participating in this pub crawl on my birthday. The actors were warm, funny, and engaging, and we left with a few new favorite pubs added to our list. Highly recommended, even if you happen to be more devoted to Guinness than books.

Excellent evening ! 2 actors performing the best of Irish literature and accompanied by a great guitarist. Very entertaining. Lovely pubs. Great company. Great tour of the quarter, not only pubs but also the university. Still, definitely enough time to enjoy drinks at every pub.
One of the actors even has been in Game of Thrones, the guitarist toured Germany and knows every town. I can't recommend this event enough.

This is hands down my favorite touristy thing to do when I visit Dublin. I've done it two summers in a row and I highly recommend it. It's run by actors who put on an engaging performance. You'll get a taste of literary history (which is interesting even to non-readers) as well as Irish history and dramatic performances to boot! I do recommend booking in advance as it's quite popular.

Content was wonderful and actor/tour guides were fantastic. Always engaged the pub crawlers without any hint of the pendantic. We'll worth your time even if you haven't read Ulysses. Dropped a star because I went on a Saturday night and pubs were so packed you could barely walk in the door. Pick a different day of the week if you want to drink pints at every pub.

Had a terrific time! Very interesting and entertaining. Our guides, Frank and Colm, sang songs, told stories, and even acted out part of Waiting for Godot. Highly recommended if you have any interest in Irish literature and would like to have a pint or two at some outstanding pubs.

About Dublin City Pub Crawl

Dublin City Pub Crawl: The Ultimate Literary Experience

If you're looking for a unique and unforgettable way to experience Dublin's famous pubs, then look no further than the Dublin City Pub Crawl. Since 1988, this tour has been the world's original literary pub crawl, taking visitors on a journey through the city's most iconic drinking establishments while showcasing some of Ireland's greatest literary talents.

Whether you're a seasoned bibliophile or just looking for a fun night out with friends, the Dublin City Pub Crawl is an experience that you won't soon forget.

The History of the Dublin City Pub Crawl

The idea for the Dublin City Pub Crawl was born in 1988 when two actors named Colm Quilligan and Bairbre Ni Chaoimh were performing in a play about James Joyce at the Abbey Theatre. After one particularly memorable performance, they decided to take their show on the road and create a walking tour that would showcase some of Dublin's most famous pubs while also celebrating its rich literary heritage.

Their first tour was an instant success and quickly became one of Dublin's most popular attractions. Over the years, it has evolved into what it is today – an immersive experience that combines history, literature, and entertainment into one unforgettable evening.

What to Expect on Your Tour

When you book your spot on the Dublin City Pub Crawl, you can expect to spend around two-and-a-half hours exploring some of Dublin's most iconic pubs while being entertained by professional actors who bring Ireland's literary greats to life.

Your journey will begin at The Duke pub on Duke Street where your guide will introduce themselves before leading you through winding streets lined with historic buildings towards your next destination. Along the way, they'll regale you with stories about Ireland’s rich cultural heritage while pointing out landmarks such as Trinity College and St Patrick’s Cathedral.

At each stop along your route – which includes such legendary establishments as Davy Byrnes (famous for its mention in Joyce’s Ulysses), O'Neill’s (a traditional Irish pub), The Palace Bar (a favourite haunt of Brendan Behan) – your guide will perform scenes from classic works by Irish writers like Oscar Wilde or W.B Yeats. You'll also have plenty of time to enjoy drinks with new friends before moving onto your next location.
