Dates of stay: 17-20 June 2020. Very nice and well-kept park. Stayed in Kayenta Campground. 21 camping spots all with power, nice flush toilets, a dish washing sink, dog poop bag station. It is a fairly small camping loop. Sites 14, 15, 17 are on an incline as you back into your spot. These provide a little better view/perspective off to the west. Dump station and dumpsters available as you enter/exit the camping loop. Each site has a large (at least 12 ft x 12 ft) "sandbox" for your tent (some spots have two areas. Each spot has an 8 ft aluminium top picnic table underneath a sun shelter with an enclosed section for storage of miscellaneous items (sort of a pantry). Additionally, each spot has a ground-level fire ring and a pedestal charcoal grill. 32 miles from Moab, so have all that you need to include water. All water is trucked in, so they want you to bring what you need. Cell service was adequate-to-good (Verizon). On some of the hiking trails I lost service, but pretty much had service at campground all the time (enough to make a call and send a few texts). 8lb cube ice available at visitor center ($3.00). They also had wood, but I didn't catch the cost.

The park is just outside of Canyonlands NP, and after you spend a day or three there, you also have the beautiful Rim trail in the park, and miles of excellent mountain biking trails. We reserved a yurt only because it became available before any campsites, but the extra cost was worth it. After camping, yurts are 5 * luxury. We cooked dinner on the gas grill and ate on the porch with a gorgeous view.

Beautiful and a must experience. Great visitor center and clean bathrooms. While a bit of a drive away from Arches National Park, this state park is magically tucked away and has some great trails. Even if you decide to not hike, you can still experience the view from the visitor center area and look out areas.

We went to Dead Horse Point State Park last week on the way to Canyonlands National Park. The view of the Colorado River was amazing. I loved seeing the bend in the river. But I honestly have to say my favorite part of Dead Horse Point is seeing the Texas Gulf Ponds over on Potash Road from an aerial view. Utah is just full of hidden gems and I will be back in June to uncover more

HONESTLY THE MOST UNDERRATED PARK OF ALL TIME. The hidden gem of southern Utah. Now THIS is like a mini Grand Canyon (but really not that mini tbh). The canyons and the horseshoe bends and the formations - all fascinating.

It has its namesake due to back in the day when horses were brought to this point for evaluation. Cowboys would pick which horses they wanted then some say they left the other horses there for dead - however, that s where the story mixes up with other stories, so best to ask a ranger at the visitor center.

Awesome park with a great food booth (Pony Espresso) outside the visitor center. He makes wraps with all fresh ingredients and full fruit smoothies from scratch. Never expected it from a state park vendor, but he obviously takes pride in his food.

Absolutely gorgeous. Great trails and stunning views. Definitely want to come back and spend more time here hiking and biking around or staying in the yurts that are in the park as their location is perfect. Easy drive from Moab town and there are a ton of great view points for someone who doesn't want to hike or has trouble walking. Visited in March 2018 and it was $10 per car.

Really, really cool! Totally feels like you're on an island in the sky while walking/running out to the point I know that name was given to one of Canyonlands' districts, but DHP feels more like an island in my opinion. I definitely recommend running the trail that loops around the island, it's a loop of only a few miles starting from the visitor center, and it's the best way to really take in the panoramic views of the beautiful surrounding area in every direction.

This place is amazing. The park is actually kind of small. For some reason I thought it was a loop, but it s actually just one road that you go in and out of. The main overlook is the best one, and a must see for sunset. The fact there are even camping spots in this park is my favorite part. I wasn t able to camp here but I just love that others can get out of their tent or rv in the morning and be on top of this insane cliff.
My only complaint is the price. $20 to get in. I was only there for an hour but it was worth all the photos and memories.
If you re at nearby Canyonlands (another gem), you d be a fool to not stop here!
Expect zero phone service.

Ended up visiting here because the line and wait to Canyonlands National Park was 2 & 1/2 hrs according to rangers. What an incredible surprise!! This ranked just as high as a couple of the national parks in Utah. However even better because the amount of people on the hiking trails were way less and many times we felt like it was just the two of us out there. The views were spectacular!! Great little snack area with awesome veggie wrap. What a gorgeous state park and very well run :) We didn't want to leave and it put a lot of pressure on Canyonlands to top the experience we had.

Beautiful views! This was my first time visiting this park. Loved the scenery. The only drawback was the smoke and haze created from the wildfires in Colorado and California. Definitely have to visit again!

Breathtaking viewpoint of the Colorado River and red sandstone vistas.
This is a very nice but remote spot to see more of the canyonlands area. Road is paved but steep and twisty in spots.
It is worth the drive, but does cost $20 per vehicle for 3 day pass to get in. Handicap accessible with well-kept facilities.

The park is great for camping, hiking, relaxing. Colorado river turn is unbelievable from this point. Cell service works near the restrooms for some reason. $20 entrance fee is a little too high but worth it, I guess. So heading to Moab, don t pass this by. It s somewhat close to GC view-wise.

If you have been to Canyonlands National Park, you can skip this place. Do not get me wrong. It is a nice and manageable park, suitable for bikers and campers. However, the scenery is not much different from that of the national park and it is much smaller.

A must stop destination when you re visiting the area, I ve been here several times and it doesn t get old! Probably one of the best views of canyonlands! Take the time to go here and be in awe! The pictures don t do it full justice and being in person it s so large that it kind of feels surreal. There s areas to eat and enjoy while you re there. Don t pass this place up

We loved Dead Horse State Park! Camped at Kayenta campground. Definitely make reservations at least a month or two in advance as it's a very popular place. Hiking and mountain biking trails were plentiful. Excellent views of the canyons and the Colorado river. Our favorite place in Moab! A must see!

This is a great location to stay if you are planni...

This is a great location to stay if you are planning to visit Arches National Park and Canyonlands National Park because it's right between them. It's about 15 minutes from the Island in the Sky entrance to Canyonlands, but you'll have to drive around quite a ways to the entrances of the other sections of Canyonlands. And it's about an hour to the entrance for Arches.
Dead Horse Point State Park also has interesting trails and sites to visit, though we weren't there long enough to see everything. If you don't have much time, at least visit the Overlook, which is a short drive from the Visitor's Center with lots of parking. There's a spectacular view overlooking the canyons. We recommend visiting at sunset, it was amazing! There are large metal structures for shade and cover from the strong wind and rain at the top of the canyons. There are short trails along the edges to get better views of each side. The overlook is definitely worth your time!
We camped at the Wingate Campground in the last week of April. The weather can change quickly in the desert in the spring. Morning through early afternoon is beautiful and clear. By the afternoon clouds start rolling in and it can get windy and start raining out of nowhere! If you're camping in the desert in the spring, just make sure to set up your rainfly and stake and tie down all your guylines because you'll get rained on and blown around quite a bit. And watch for lightning, it happens a lot during desert storms! Keep your tent windows and gear covered because the fine red dust gets everywhere, especially when it's windy! When nights are clear, it's great for stargazing because it's nice and dark out there.
The Wingate Campground is only a few years old. It has tent sites, RV sites with power, yurts, some vault toilets and some flushing toilets with sinks. The bathrooms are individual ones instead of public with multiple stalls. That was nice for privacy, though it limited bathroom space. Not all the tent sites are drive up, ours was a parking spot by the bathroom and then you carry your gear down a short path, but it wasn't bad.
The campsite has a sturdy metal pavilion with two walls over a metal picnic table. This was especially nice when the wind and rain picked up, and it kept our gear relatively safe and dry. We found ourselves saying constantly, "I'm so glad we have this pavilion!" The tent pad was soft fine red dirt (it gets everywhere!) with enough room for two average tents next to each other. There was also a metal fire pit with a grill attached. The tent sites are pretty close to each other so you can hear your neighbors if they get rowdy (like ours did), but they are usually faced away from each other and the pavilions are oriented to mostly block them from one another.
You have to buy firewood at each campground because they don't want foreign organisms from outside wood to affect the delicate desert ecosystem. And stay on the trails to protect the wild desert landscape around the camp sites so everyone can enjoy the experience of camping in the desert!
