Not wanting to stay on a negative apriori, I tried the experience again.
And I absolutely do not regret it!
The staff are very attentive, the cappuccino is to die for and the desserts are very, very good. The cafe is very nice, and perfectly located.
They encountered quite a few difficulties in terms of recruitment and quality of service, but they really knew how to remedy them.
Continue this momentum, and see you next time!

A very nice place, the decor is typical industrial giving a look very "to him" at this cafe. There is the best coffee in Paris! One can even take a look at the machine to torment the coffee found in the bottom of the shop.
Their pavlovas / pancakes with milk jam / carrot cakes are to die for .. Count between 10 and 12 for a breakfast and between 24 and 32 for a brunch very rich.

I arrive at the end of the lunch service, few people. I ask for a coffee and have me set up at the counter after fifteen minutes I'll have the personal chat between them ... they forgot me. After some look a waiter approaches and asks me if I have been served no excuse and no commercial gesture. Unique pro a small carafe of water served with coffee

Exceptional coffee, exceptional brunch. IN PARIS?!...

Exceptional coffee, exceptional brunch. IN PARIS?!?!?

This is for Emperor Norton:

Brunch? In Paris? WAIT WAAaaait.... diversity in selection, for *BRUNCH*, in PARIS? Served in a coffee house that has depth, consistency, and stellar coffee.

But what Emperor Norton is doing would be precarious if it wasn't so well executed. Paris is not known for Brunch, but one must start somewhere, and while many look at purveyors of new concepts as daring or risky, sometimes someone is just prescient, and dialed into trends. I think Emperor Norton saw a need, and beat the curve on a new trend. It will give them the time needed to improve upon their excellent skills and menu. I imagine they will only end up more in demand, and likely move to a bigger spot in the future. As I understand, the kitchen is not the most expansive or efficient. Any other reviewers problems might be due, in large part, to their restrictions with the setup. Coutume cafe should be happy to have them as long as possible.

Emperor Norton evolves traditional breakfast fare, by adding subtle touches to some egg dishes, while creating absolutely foreign concepts for the city - like a breakfast burrito, or scrambled eggs and salsa on chips, etc. It's wonderful to enter a place and be completely surprised by the menu - it was unexpected, and completely refreshing. It was a welcome change from the traditional fare... and a marked departure from the carboloaded breakfast we are used to.

This is by no means a pretentious fine dining experience - this is a modern take on CA Fresh Mexican diner morning food. They are producing tastes that are not uncommon to some of the best breakfast joints throughout the west coast of the US.

The food is exceptional, the coffee is EPIC (see previous Coutume review), and it's something we can't wait to return to... not just to eat again, but to see how they grow and evolve.

This is the start of something very rare, fun, exceptional in Paris, and I can't wait to see how these innovators lead the way.

This is for Coutume:

Is this from an American viewpoint? Yes.

Stellar service - kind, patient, and professional. They suffered my Americanism with grace and class. They also excel at coffee in a way few places in Paris understand. Multiple types of brewing, shockingly good foaming.... I don't need to ramble on to make the point:

This is 5 star coffee in a city with 2 star options for hot caffeine. The post dinner espresso is ubiquitous, but anything else is trouble to find. Coutume produces such quality coffee, I greedily had so much I was vibrating my surroundings for about 6 hours.

Expertly brewed, expertly served, and delicious. It's a demur, unpretentious place.... but an exceptional treat nonetheless. We wouldn't have found it if it weren't for Emperor Norton, so I would consider their brunch team a big help in getting the word out about this exceptional coffee house.

THANK YOU!

This is their first and primary location, but IMO the other one (in the Finnish institute) is nicer in terms of decor and has better coffee (even the one here, though, is one of the best you can find in Paris). On the other hand here they have some service.

Not going to lie down who wrote reviews. I've been to December 2016, but I think it's probably a male server manager, but this guy is a bit pleasant and the other female servers don't understand English or even speak. Just annoying. When I paid, I paid the bills. I still don't know if it was, but I pulled 5 cents out of a plate with a small coin in front of the cash register and rolled it oddly without going back. Hahaha, the male server looks at the side and pulls out a coin... Am I supposed to take it out at that moment..? But later, I went to another cafe nearby and asked him that it was wrong to do so. Ha ha ha. Food is good (pencake) Coffee is not enough to visit and drink... I went to Paris just because I didn't have a few specialty stores, but I did. Ha ha ha

A friend introduced me to this cafe. I tasted it for the first time a hot chocolate with white chocolate ;)
You can taste the cappuccino Italian way "Coffee latte art".
Pear cake is delicious, not too sweet or fat. Otherwise, boho atmosphere, the servers are friendly.

My friend and I went to Coutume for brunch on a late Saturday morning/early afternoon, and we were surprised with the ease of getting a table; we didn't have to wait at all! The lack of waiting, along with Coutume's relaxed & contemporary atmosphere, were the highlights of this quest for weekend brunch.

My friend and I each ordered a delicious hot chocolate (4,50 euros each) and got different brunch plates (see pictures). One thing to keep in mind is that their menu does change, because we went to Coutume with the intention of getting eggs benedict, which they no longer offered. :(

I was feeling especially hungry & indulgent so I also ordered a cheesecake slice, but the waitress completely forgot about my order so I had to ask another waitress again about 10 mins later. The cheesecake had a nice taste but was dry (would have been much better if they had some sort of a raspberry sauce with it or something of the sort). If and when you go to Coutume, you can expect the ambience to be great, the food to be good enough (but nothing mind-blowing), the waitresses to be friendly enough, but the service to be somewhat mediocre... so at least the prices aren't over the top (although it's not super cheap either).

I often travel to Coutume to buy coffee beans for my espresso machine. The staff are always friendly and provide great advice, but anyway I'm never disappointed with the excellent coffee sold there!

A favourite coffee joint in Paris, mostly because it was one of the first ones there when I first visited over 5 years ago. Buzzy atmosphere, great coffee and they serve a few craft beers too. It is an expensive part of town so the coffee isn't cheap.

Recommended by many blogs among bars where you can sit and work a little on our computer, think again. As soon as the computer came out, not one but two waitresses said that the computer was not welcome here because it would bring them less money.

Single origin filtered coffee was delicious. The staff was extremely nice and apologetic about wait time / changes in menu. Quiet and chilled place. Airy and you could stay there the whole afternoon.

The coffee is excellent however the service is horrendous. I waited forever for a takeaway coffee and only got it once I complained when I would get my coffee. I m pretty sure they forgot I ordered something

Staff absolutely not welcoming, pretending the customer is transparent, no hello, they leave customers in the lobby. Scandalous. Too bad because the food looks good. But do not recommend at all.

A nice place to stop for lunch or breakfast. We enjoy the savory pancakes and although I have not tested the sweet ones, they look incredible! A short menu but with fresh and good products! Quite a few tourists apparently, but this place deserves to be known because the service is really nice.
Small flat because no wifi, while the network does not pass on the large table at the back of the room which lends itself however so well to Coworking!

An edit to my review (Im changing my 5 stars to 3) - they now don t allow you to use a computer here.

I had one of their staff come up to me after I had ordered a full breakfast and a coffee, telling me I wasn t allowed to even read on my iPad! A frustrating experience for sure.

Fantastic cafe with local roasted beans and fantastic foods - but as of my last visit (April 2018) I have now received only terrible service and a rude approach at telling customers what they can and cannot do while drinking a coffee.

There is a strong aroma of coffee in the shop, and delicious desserts are available at the counter. It is suitable for a person who is tired after a stroll in Paris, and is also suitable for chat parties.

Note: Chai Latte is not already sweet. Brown sugar is available on our table.

Nice cup of proper coffee. I got a long black. The beans were nicely roasted. Not burnt like many places serve. The barista was friendly and helpful.

In the rear of the shop was a nice roasting machine and quality brewing supplies.

Go for coffee, not to eat, only if you're in the neighbourhood. Not worth the detour. Service mediocre & food portions small/disappointing.
Server could not tell me how they prepared their "Cold brew/drip". 13 beetroot carpaccio with tabouleh = a few slices of beetroots with a green salad, no bulgur or grains. Dressing was nice, but I did not appreciate the reluctance to bring me a simple slice of bread after I saw what I had in my plate (had to ask 3 times and got it after they cleared my plate).
And before paying, I asked a server and a barista about the beans they had for sale and one brushed me off, the other simply pointed to the board at the back and walked away. Needless to say, I didn't buy any.

Coffee is the only good thing here, service is bad, seating is cramped and uncomfortable, the room is super loud... the list goes on. But the worst thing is the overpriced food, which isn't really healthy or good when you compare it to other similar places in Paris... they somehow seem to have tapped the tourist market and don't even pretend to care anymore

For the past 6 months I have been looking for a good flat white in Paris. Given the size of the city and the afinity with good food and wine you would expect them to be everywhere... nothing could be less true. Even Starbucks here seems to think a flat white is a cappuccino with an extra shot. .. BUT I just found coutume!!! Excellent silky froth with a string balanced roast and to make it better than just a great flat white ( which it is) the patisseries are French and excellent! Ii will be here a lot!

I don't usually drink latte but it was delicious. Espresso is a strong acidity type. You can enjoy the time slowly after eating with sugar.
The pancakes were not desserts, but lunchy and delicious.
It was around noon on Saturday but it was crowded. Free Wi-Fi with password is fast and comfortable.

Really good coffee, and the food looked great. Unfortunately the staff were not friendly which made it hard to enjoy ourselves. Nice atmosphere with quite a lot of seating. Some tight spots near the front, but more room for seating in the middle and back of the cafe. A nice spot to hang out, but no wifi.
