Great venue but an absolute nightmare on Friday & Saturday as it's smack bang in the middle of loads of bars full of drunken groups, stag and hen parties whose screams and shouts are often heard in the auditoriums. Visit Sunday-Thursday. Avoid like the plague on Friday-Saturday.

Comfy

Great cinema. Centre of town, good bar, basement for gigs, 4 screens, regular special showings for arthouse films, runs of films by directors, live showings of opera and theatre. Love it.

A splendid cinema, well up to the Picturehouse standard, with a glorious waterfront location. The lounge enjoys a good range of cask-conditioned and craft beers, an impressive range of hot meals and some naughty cakes to accompany your coffee. :-)

I spent three wonderful years as a student at York university and much of my hard-earned student loan was spent at this wonderful cinema. It was always my first choice out of the three cinemas in and around York, offering a good mix of art-house films and major blockbusters. I remember seeing both Beasts of the Southern Wild and Skyfall in the same day, surely the sign of a cinema with an eclectic catalogue.
The tickets are reasonably priced for a high-standard cinema in the centre of town. The surroundings are beautiful and they also offer food and drink in their beautiful bar. It is well worth taking some time out of your day to sit and enjoy a pint by the river with one of their wonderful ales.
They also do some wonderful comedy shows in their basement, where both low-fi comedians and high-billing folks with work-in-progress shows can perform.
The place really cannot be faulted, I highly recommend it to all film fans and anyone looking for a good night out.

Great cinema, friendly staff, good membership deal. The seating placement can be a bit awkward such that you might get unlucky and not be able to see the screen due to who is infront of you. Food is a bit pricy but there's a lovely bar integrated with the cinema which you should definitely check out. They don't show every film but if you like more senior films you won't be disappointed. This cinema is not great for young kids due to the crowd it attracts which can be a pro or a con depending on your situation. Definitely worth checking out with a date or loved one.

Brilliant helpful staff. Clean and tidy facilities and brilliant array of showings inclusive to all with additional needs. I would suggest where possible do not take pushchair as one small lift. And they operate a key system for disabled and baby change facilities so make sure you get that before getting down to the basement as getting the lift back up can take some time in busy periods. Great little venue though. Enjoy your visit.

I have visited this place 5 times in the last 3 weeks. Their classic and current movie selections are great! The have a great selection of drinks, candy and popcorn. The view is wonderful (so come a little early to enjoy a drink before the movie)!

Not visited before. Very comfortable seating in an auditorium with excellent picture and sound quality. Tickets not the cheapest but still good value. Did not use the cafe/bar but it looked nice overlooking the river.

Good cinema, great screens , comfy seating, fab films...so why only 3 stars? I will tell you why, it is due to the incredibly annoying and pretentious who laugh loudly, falsely the majority of the time, at anything that is even remotely amusing or comic...totally ruin some fine movies with there incessant desire to be heard!! NOTHING is that funny that you have to let the whole audience watching the film know about your insecurities..Please stop it! People dont laugh like you at other cinemas so why do you??

Excellent city cenre venue.
Comfortable seats, welcoming staff plus good food.
Cafe bar is complemented by a balcony area with great views up and down the river Ouse.
My favourite place in York.

This is one of those places that I just love sit with a drink and people's watch. I know it is a cinema, but it is so much more than that. It is a meeting place for friends and business is passed between strangers as well.. For me, it is one of York's top eateries.

I love the City Screen - Bar/food area is lovely, really chilled out and great if you are in a small group and probably even better if you are on your own, just rock up with a book or a laptop and have a coffee, tea, beer or glass of wine.

View over the river in the summer is immense but hard to get a seat (because it is immense) but if you are willing to hang around long enough, you'll get a veranda seat as there is no bookings.

What I really love is the cinema, super comfy seats, great choice of mainstream and indie films and a sound system that will blow your mind, (saw Return of the King there back in the early 00's so I can vouch!).

Best thing? You can take an alcoholic drink from the bar into the film, just tell the staff as you are being served and they will serve it in a plastic glass.

Superb.

Lovely local cinema, not many screens so not many films on, but they show interesting ones and it's well maintained and a pleasant experience. They have a good bar with tasty food and decent wine list, you can take your drink into the showing.

Watched the first 30 minutes of 1917, before the video stopped working. Took them 10 minutes to realise/restore. Happily gave a refund, thank goodness because 5 minutes later it broke again. Wouldn t let us go to an alternate screening of a different movie, not sure why as it would have been no less disruptive.

Got asked to leave the cinema because the staff thought I hadn't paid!! Inter business communication would be effective. However the staff member apologised and thought 'there had been some mistake'. However the film was amazing!

My friends and I went to city screen to watch the new Spider-Man (12A). The tickets were a reasonable price. So we went ahead and bought tickets. It was a very miserable day as it had rained. We had arrived 5 minutes early to go to the toilets and get settled. As we were about to enter the person who examines are tickets pulled us up and asked If we had any ID. This confused us as our other friends had already gone in. We were 13 and were unfortunately not carry ID with us. We think they stopped just us going in was because of our height as we were the smallest of the group. In order to prove we were allowed to go to watch the film I offered them to ring my parents and even see our private social medias. They still didn't accept this. So we were forced a refund. I can agree that they would be concerned that we didn't have ID but they could have told us straight away rather than us going through the whole experience.

This is a fantastic, chilled place. The auditorium sells drinks and snacks plus there's a bar - and they even allow the drinks to be taken into the cinema! The seats are very comfortable and the angle of their position means you aren't looking at the back of the person in front throughout the showing. Recommended for a visit, even if it's just for a coffee and sit by the window next to the river.

Quite unexpected trip during a few days away with other half. Got in for over 60's prices, free cuppa+biscuit before going in. Cozy feel to this place, just like sitting home watching tv with gigantic screen. Would definitely recommend, well worth money.
