This Outer Banks Lifesaving Station is the only complete US Life Saving Service Station complex still standing on The Outer Banks. It is maintained by volunteers and donations. These Ststions were built about every 7 miles along the coast here to save shipwreck survivors. Shipwrecks were very common here going back in time from the early 20th century. This place has the original 1874 Station and the larger 1911 Station. It is definitly a piece of Outer Banks History and worth a visit. The heroic crews braved treacherous conditions to save many people. The US Coast Guard is the evolution of this effort.

A very interesting place to visit. Being a teacher in the Midwest, I had never heard of a life-saving station. Learned a lot about this place and its role in history. There was a small fee to get in, but it was worth it. Parking is free. Limited handicapped accessibility due to the various buildings and no pavement in the past. One can climb a ladder to the lookout area. They also have some historic artifacts to view. I would recommend to family and friends.

Took my 6 y.o. grandson on a tour of this historic U S Life Saving Station in Rodanthe, NC. Short self guided tour of half dozen buildings dating back as far as ~1874. Learned a lot about the US LSS service and the many heroic rescues performed. Educational and fun!

This place was great. They had a lot of historical info about the area and plenty of exhibits to view. Most exhibits are outdoors so dont go when it's very hot outside. Also, had a nice gift shop. The workers are very knowledgable and are happy to answer any questions.wasnt very expensive for a family of 5 to visit.

The staff were amazingly helpful and informative. We took we a group of 4th graders and they were entranced by the staff telling tales of epic rescues at sea and regimented life at the station. They occasionally do drills to demonstrate the life saving techniques, call and ask for details.

A lovely museum comprised of 5 original buildings used by Life-Saving crews from the late 19th and early 20th century. The remarkable bravery of these selfless men, and their supportive spouses, is enshrined here to inspire future generations as well as commemorate the sacrifices made and heroism of their actions. Staffed by friendly and knowledgeable volunteers. The museum survives on entrance fees and donations. Some parts are wheelchair accessible, including the restrooms. A very worthwhile stop for fans of the Cape's history.

Great place to explore the history of US coast guard service. Friendly staff and home to some wonderful artifacts. An original picture of Wright brothers first flight and a copy of the Telegraph message sent by them announcing their successful flight were amazing to see!

Incredible heroes! These were men in a small boat fighting the sea at its worst or the flames of a burning wreck using rudimentary equipment that was ingenious in its simplicity. All of them were risking everything for strangers passing by their island home. Chicamacomico Station is an informative visit to the predecessor of our current day Coast Guard.

Update for 2019: arrived at 3:40... place closes at 5:00... was asked what i wanted... i asked to pay for tour...was told they weren't selling anymore tour tickets.... that the tour needed 1 1/2 hour. :-/ i am fast touring, dont want to spend most of my day in one place. Not good service. Guess you don't want to make $. Treat single individuals vacationing by themselves with as much respect as those with children or large groups. Old review: Last ticket for self guided tour sold at 4pm to give you an hour to view the site and exhibits.

This place is beautiful and full of historical significance. We we're lucky enough to catch a drill reinactment and it was so neat! They are on Thursdays at 2pm definitely something to check out. The artifact and old life saving gear are fascinating, as well. The view from the tower is like none other. This site is $8 well spent.

This historic life-saving station in the Cape Hatteras National Park, along North Carolina's Outer Banks is fantastic. Try to catch the fascinating re-enactment of rescuing hapless sailors from a sinking ship, performed every Thursday afternoon at 2 pm. Fascinating.

Chicamacomico Life Saving Station: Preserving History and Saving Lives

Chicamacomico Life-Saving Station is a historic site located in Rodanthe, North Carolina. It is one of the most complete sites of all remaining life-saving stations in North Carolina and one of the most complete sites in the nation. The station was established in 1874 to provide assistance to ships that were stranded or wrecked along the treacherous coast of North Carolina.

With its two stations and five outbuildings, Chicamacomico Life-Saving Station has been preserved as a museum that showcases the history of life-saving efforts along this dangerous stretch of coastline. Visitors can explore exhibits that detail the daily lives of life-savers, their equipment, and their heroic rescues.

The Chicamacomico Life-Saving Station is open year-round for visitors who want to learn about this important part of American history. The museum offers guided tours, educational programs for schools and groups, special events throughout the year, and a gift shop where visitors can purchase souvenirs.

The History Behind Chicamacomico

The Chicamacomico Life-Saving Station was established by Congress in 1871 after several shipwrecks occurred off the coast near Hatteras Island. The station was built on land donated by local residents who recognized the need for a rescue service along this dangerous stretch of coastline.

The first station at Chicamacomico was completed in 1874 with a second station added later on. These stations were manned by teams of surfmen who were trained to rescue sailors from shipwrecks using specialized equipment such as breeches buoys and surfboats.

Over time, technology improved with motorized boats replacing sailboats as well as other advancements like radios which allowed communication between stations during emergencies.

In addition to rescuing sailors from shipwrecks, life-savers also provided assistance during storms or other natural disasters such as hurricanes or floods. They would often help transport people or supplies across flooded areas when roads were impassable due to high water levels.

Life at Chicamacomico

Life at Chicamacomico wasn't easy for those stationed there. Surfmen worked long hours under difficult conditions with little time off between shifts. They lived together in close quarters with few amenities beyond basic necessities like food and shelter.

Despite these challenges though they remained dedicated to their mission - saving lives - which made them heroes among locals who depended on them during times when disaster struck nearby communities along coastal areas throughout North Carolina's Outer Banks region including Hatteras Island where they are based today!

Visiting Today

Today visitors can experience what it was like living at an active lifesaving station through interactive exhibits showcasing everything from how surfmen trained using drills simulating real-life scenarios involving rescues from sinking ships; displays featuring artifacts used by these brave men including ropes used for hauling survivors ashore; even replicas showing how breeches buoys worked!

Visitors will also learn about some famous rescues carried out by these brave men over years past including stories about daring rescues involving women & children aboard sinking vessels; tales detailing how crews battled fierce storms while trying desperately save those stranded offshore; accounts describing how lifesavers risked their own lives time again going into rough seas attempting save others despite knowing full well dangers involved!

Conclusion:

Chicacamico Lifesaving Station is an important piece not only American history but also maritime history worldwide! It serves not only as an educational resource but also provides inspiration future generations reminding us all importance courage selflessness when faced adversity!
