Centro Presente, Inc: Empowering Immigrant Communities in Boston
Welcome to the official homepage for the City of Boston. If you're looking for a community organization that is dedicated to empowering immigrant communities in Boston, look no further than Centro Presente, Inc.
Founded in 1981, Centro Presente has been a leading voice for immigrant rights and social justice in the Greater Boston area for nearly four decades. The organization was created by a group of Salvadoran refugees who had fled their country's civil war and settled in Cambridge, Massachusetts. They recognized the need for an organization that could provide support and advocacy for other immigrants like themselves who were struggling to build new lives in a new country.
Since its founding, Centro Presente has grown into one of the most respected and effective community organizations in Massachusetts. The organization's mission is to promote the rights and well-being of Latin American immigrants through education, advocacy, organizing, and leadership development.
One of Centro Presente's core programs is its Immigrant Rights Defense Committee (IRDC), which provides legal assistance and representation to immigrants facing deportation or detention. The IRDC also works to educate immigrant communities about their legal rights and how they can protect themselves from immigration enforcement actions.
Another key program at Centro Presente is its Workers' Center, which advocates for fair wages and working conditions for low-wage workers throughout Greater Boston. The Workers' Center provides training on workers' rights as well as support with wage theft claims or other labor violations.
In addition to these programs, Centro Presente also offers English classes; citizenship preparation courses; health education workshops; youth leadership development programs; cultural events celebrating Latin American heritage; and much more.
Centro Presente's impact on immigrant communities throughout Greater Boston cannot be overstated. Through its tireless work advocating for social justice on behalf of some of our most vulnerable neighbors – those who have come here seeking safety from violence or persecution – this organization has made an enormous difference in countless lives over the years.
