Casey Family Programs: Providing a Better Future for Children in Foster Care
Casey Family Programs is a non-profit organization that has been working tirelessly to improve the lives of children and families in the foster care system since 1966. The organization was founded by Jim Casey, one of the co-founders of United Parcel Service (UPS), who believed that every child deserves a safe and loving home.
The mission of Casey Family Programs is to provide and improve – and ultimately prevent the need for – foster care. They believe that every child should have the opportunity to grow up in a safe, stable, and nurturing environment. To achieve this goal, they work with communities across America to develop innovative solutions that strengthen families and support children.
One of the unique aspects of Casey Family Programs is their focus on prevention. They recognize that many children end up in foster care due to poverty, lack of access to healthcare or education, substance abuse issues within their family, or other social determinants. By addressing these underlying issues before they escalate into crises, Casey Family Programs aims to keep families together whenever possible.
In addition to prevention efforts, Casey Family Programs provides direct services for children who are already in foster care. These services include:
1) Placement Services: Finding safe and loving homes for children who cannot live with their birth families.
2) Education Support: Ensuring that all children have access to quality education opportunities.
3) Health Services: Providing medical and mental health services as needed.
4) Transition Support: Helping young adults transition out of foster care into independent living.
Casey Family Programs also works closely with policymakers at both state and federal levels to advocate for policies that support vulnerable children and families. They believe that systemic change is necessary if we want all children in America to have an equal chance at success.
Over the years, Casey Family Programs has made significant progress towards achieving its mission. In 2019 alone:
- Over 4000 youth were served through direct programs
- Over 1000 youth were placed into permanent homes
- Over $10 million was invested in community-based prevention programs
But there is still much work left to be done. According to recent statistics from Child Welfare Information Gateway:
- There are currently over 400000 children living in foster care across America
- On average these kids spend almost two years (20 months) waiting for adoption
- Only about half will graduate high school by age 18
These numbers highlight just how critical it is for organizations like Casey Family Programs continue their important work.
