My 74-year-old mother decides to undergo surgery to decompress the spinal cord in the L3-L4 spinal tract. We are happy because, vox populi, we have found a good surgeon. The operation takes place on 13 May in the Pierangeli affiliated clinic; my mother wakes up sore and confused but everything is normal. We are a bit worried because on the phone she cries but, due to COVID19, we absolutely cannot see her. On 19 May she was transferred to the Spatocco clinic for rehabilitation and at this juncture her hearing aid was lost. She is more and more confused and agitated, she no longer answers the phone and when we talk to the nurses we only hear sobbing and loud TV (the medical records then tell us that the mother disturbed the other patients). We insist on seeing it but nothing, it is not possible. When she stops eating and the tube is inserted, we protest strongly and only at this point the health management makes an "exception to the rule" and we manage to see her: my mother arrives with a messy coat; he has an astonished and amazed gaze, a short and syncopated breath, he does not recognize me and does not speak; furrows of dried tears mark her cheeks. The head physician talks about psychotic syndrome, a polite way of saying that, according to him, she is crazy. On June 10, my mother is hospitalized in an emergency and in a drowsy state at the hospital in Chieti. The diagnosis is sepsis and severe lung infection. In medicine they stem the various infections but she moves further and further away, she is in a coma and worries her neurological state. Meanwhile, we discover from the medical records (yes, we find out because we were not told) that she fell out of bed the day after the surgery. On June 30th my mother suffers a septic shock: intensive care, tracheostomy and mechanical ventilation; the resuscitation team manages to cure the severe lung infection and discovers that he previously had ischemia with consequent cerebral hemorrhage.
