Campus Compact is a national coalition of colleges and universities that are dedicated to the public purposes of higher education. The organization was founded in 1985, and since then, it has grown into a network of over 1,000 member institutions across the United States. Campus Compact's mission is to advance the public purposes of higher education by deepening students' civic learning and engagement, fostering campus-community partnerships, and promoting democratic participation.
The organization believes that higher education has a responsibility to contribute to the common good by preparing students for active citizenship in a diverse democracy. Campus Compact works with its members to create opportunities for students to develop their civic knowledge, skills, and values through coursework, service-learning projects, community-based research projects, internships with community organizations or government agencies.
Campus Compact also helps its members build strong partnerships between their campuses and local communities. These partnerships can take many forms: from service-learning courses that connect students with community organizations; to research collaborations that address pressing social issues; to initiatives that promote economic development or environmental sustainability.
One example of Campus Compact's work in this area is its Community Engagement Classification program. This program recognizes institutions that have demonstrated an institutional commitment to community engagement through teaching, research or scholarship; outreach or partnership; or institutional culture.
