This place has delicious food, they easily receive five stars for that. They are getting two stars because of the way the owners treat their staff. When I went here in college, a couple years ago, staff was chewed out in front of customers pretty regularly. I returned to Brule a couple weekends ago, and low and behold, years later, an owner was chewing out a male server right next to our table. It was extremely awkward as she talked down to him in a sarcastic voice about how busy he was as he cleared dirty tables. Multiple tables were staring. She continued to talk to him this way as she walked away, letting more people hear. Maybe get after your staff somewhere private rather than in front of your customers.

This place is a locals favorite. Most items on the menu are extraordinarily well priced for what you receive. We have lunch or dinner here once a month give or take as its very family friendly and the place to be seen. Their coffee bar is very impressive for a small community.
Brought my son up to college and Googled a place to eat. This came highly recommended and I can see why. Our server Matt was amazing he knew the menu front and back. The food absolutely incredible and a selection was amazing. I will be back definitely when I visit my son. Great job to the staff and what a wonderful atmosphere
Sat here for over 30 minutes waiting for our food, watching people who came in after us get there food. They left before us. So now I sit here laughing at the service. Good thing I ll never come back here
Small restaurant in the downtown area of the college town. Food was great and reasonably priced. Our server was a college student, very friendly and courteous. Cupcakes and French pastries fabulous.
We had their cake for our wedding and everyone loved it!! We liked so many different and amazing flavors we ended up getting 4 different flavors total and it was hard to narrow it down that far! My absolute favorite is the Chocolate Stout and Red Velvet! Not only was the cake great though, Monica is an amazing person to work with and really makes it fun getting your cake planned. Prices are very good around the are, especially considering how it is!
My favorite breakfast in Vermillion. They have a nice range of options: mimosas, classics like eggs, bacon, potatoes, and pancakes. They also have some more unique offerings like their house coffee (grog), potatoes brule, frittatas, and fresh pastries.
Service and order accuracy from the kitchen aren't always spot on (sometimes I get bacon when I asked for no bacon (which sounds like a good thing except I'm a vegetarian); sometimes they forget the side of sour cream with an order that's supposed to come with it; sometimes my English muffin isn't actually toasted, ...) but it's a college town so I do my best to roll with it. Plan to be flexible and enjoy the friendly staff and overall tasty food.
Lunch and dinner are popular with many folks but I think their breakfast is definitely their strongest meal.
The restaurant is pretty cool, they got a large selection of classic menu items and some innovative ones as well. They have seasonal items and daily soups which adds to your dining experience by adding a new thing to try when you come it. They got great desserts as well and many specialty drinks as well, various lattes, teas, and more. I like the foccia rosti and their sweet potato fries are pretty enjoyable. They also got day old muffins and other baked goods so if you like a deal, go get some!
A gem in S.Dakota we were sent here by the desk clerk at the Best Western. Very good food bordering on fine dining. It's a small college town and we were expecting a fast food feel but we're pleasantly surprised. Diverse menu and everything was delicious.
Very clean and wonderful place! The service is excellent and the coffee and pastries are the bomb. Siannah and Abbey were on top of everything that I asked about! Their service made my experience at Cafe Brule wonderful!
We were very disappointed with our Monte Carlo or Monte Cristo sandwich. There was very little meat inside very little cheese it was mostly sweet bread and it was like we were having donuts for lunch very disappointing
Hands down best restaurant in Vermillion. Best place to eat breakfast and best place to get pastries and coffee. Staff is always well trained and ready to serve your needs.
Visiting my sister at school and my and I took her to dinner. The hot turkey my dad had was the best I've had and the only problem I had with the Cincinnati Mac and Cheese was that it was it burned my tongue because I wanted to dig in too fast.
0 stars if I could. Was attended by staff for a cup of water. Sat for 20 minutes waiting for someone to take an order. No staff acknowledgement even after signaling them.
usually slow service, but worth it, the food is great! my fave when its on the menu is the sriracha chicken and waffles. and dont you dare pass up the potatoes brule!!!
It's a little tight on space sometimes, which can make accomodating larger groups difficult but it's not impossible with the right timing and planning ahead. Food is always excellent and the staff is good. Doesn't matter whether breakfast, lunch or dinner, it's all good and you are destined to find something you like.
Everything was absolutely amazing. The food was perfectly portioned and the prices are reasonable. The service was just as perfect as the food. Can't wait to visit again!
I visited Vermillion for the first time in over a decade and had lunch at Cafe Brule. Their menu is fairly extensive. Our food arrived as anticipated. However, it seemed every time someone came to our table, it was a new person. We had at least 6 different people wait on us ... a bit weird. Food was good, not outstanding, but fair for the $.
The coffee here was fantastic, the food was delicious, and the service was so friendly and helpful. They were very busy while we were there, so it was a little slow getting our food. I normally would've knocked them down a star for being slow, but their food was so good it made up for it!
I can't really say much about the cake because we didn't even try cakes. The problem was that my mother, my bridesmaid, and I had an appointment with Monica to test cakes and discuss designs, but Monica decided to ignore us for longer than we could deal with. This was an appointment for which I was annoying, and probably 'bridezilla-y', about being on time for because I hate when I'm late and try to respect other people's time (particularly those whose businesses are appointment based, i.e. hair stylists, dentists). Anyway, yeah, not being late for an appointment with Monica was my goal - especially after my conversation with her setting up the appointment where she felt inclined to tell me that her days book up fast and it's very hard to schedule with her without a little notice and planning. Got it, Monica, you're super popular, which is why I wanted to try your cake. That being said, Monica does not share the same opinion as me about other people's time as she disregarded my group for nearly a half hour of our scheduled appointment. We watched her continue to serve her client's from the appointment before us with nary a glance or nod in our direction, acknowledging our existence. My mother is not a woman to give people more than 15 minutes of her time without some sort of apology or recognition of their tardiness. I asked her to wait a tad longer but the last straw was when Monica got up from her appointment, and instead of moving to our table, decided to leave the room. The unfortunate thing is that Monica could have done several things that would have made us wait longer for her services.... but she didn't. In fact, when she followed us out to my mother's car once we walked out, she blamed her prior customers rather than taking responsibility. She actually said "Sorry they just kept TALKING." That, to me, is not a good business strategy. I should've listened to my friend who decided to use Monica and described her as unreliable and flaky and also shared that Monica tried to blame her for several of the issues that arose with her own cake.
I've literally never reviewed anything before today, but my mom is right, my time is just as important as the next person's. If she's not going to let me have control of my time for a simple cake testing, what else will I lose out on before the wedding? I'm a pretty laid-back, passive person and were it not for my mom, I might still be sitting waiting for Monica, hours later, but truly, we drove 45 minutes from my town for appointment, the least she could've done, is take the five steps over to our table and say "Hey, sorry this appointment is running late, let me finish up and I will be right with you." That would have satisfied me and appeased my mother. I had heard pretty good things about the quality of these cakes, but I'd rather not deal with someone like that for a cake. I will go elsewhere and get a cake I love and wont have to feel like my time and effort is not important. Or like I owe it to them to sit and wait for them.
I know this review will have little to no effect on business, but I do hope Monica reads this and maybe changes her approach to customer service because both my and my friend's experience is now enough to not recommend her to any of our friends (and leave a 1-star review describing why I hate it, which like I said I normally don't take the time for). Wedding cakes are available everywhere, folks, so I advise you give your business to someone who knows how to treat customers.
