Rude staff, and the entire place smells like mold and dust. The store was also very hot inside and just very uncomfortable to walk around in.
Brattle is the best book shop in the downtown area. The books outside are always for sale from $1, $3 and $5. You can really find a gem if you look hard enough. Sometimes they even have books in different languages, if you're lucky.
A very nice used bookstore with pleasant staff and a large bargain area outside on nice days.
The shop is well organised over two floors. It always feels like there is a quick turnover of stock with new items turning up.
The Irish section is quite good and on my visit they had a considerable amount of Lit Crit. An ample Civil War section, two shelves of railroad books and two sections of SF. It offers a good variety. The second floor is a rare book level but there are good prices here and do not be put off by a book being rare - some unusual railroad books were $10!
Always worth a visit.
For comic fans the graphic novel section is always small. A shelf - if that but it does turnover.
Excellent service, low prices, must to visit we you're in Boston.
I spent three hours last in exploration of this treasure trove, and could've happily spent far longer! All outdoor books are discounted, which was a fun surprise, and I found some true treasures!
The third floor is where they hide the oddities. The antiques. The book about animal bites that I was tempted to buy, featuring information on what to do if you get bitten by a camel.
I love browsing at the Brattle. Great cheap books outside, plus plenty more to look at inside. Third floor has some great (if expensive) books to look at.
I like the freedom to browse through a big quantity of old books.
Great collection across a few floors. Adds up as a tourist attraction as well.
One of the coolest places to happen upon while walking Boston. Love the outdoor alley shelves. We happened to be there during a great sale, too. (Edited to note that the books outside weren't on sale...but ALWAYS priced at $1, $3, and $5...great deals!!) Got a few nice titles to take home. Friendly staff, too.
Love old books and this is the best place I have found. From the outdoor book yard to the rare book section on the third floor it feels like a trip through history . For any lover of old books
Thanks Brattle Book Shop! Your outdoor book stalls are one of my favorite spots in the city. You are a true landmark and a semi-frequent pleasure. My wallet would be fatter but my mind poorer without you.
Great spot to find hard to find books. Old school book store with an outside shop as well.
Spectacular spot just off the Common for books ranging from ten-thousand-dollar collectibles to bargain-bin, well-loved classics. This quaint shop spills into the alley next door, offering a seemingly endless array of titles. It's just one more hole-in-the-wall stop that adds to the irresistible charm of the city. Plus, there are plenty of spots nearby to grab a drink and enjoy your new reads!
Amazing place for used books!!! I found more selection here today than many trips to Barnes and Noble... Plus the outside sale section is cool...
Bargain books galore on the open-air lot next to the store. If you have plenty of time (and patience), there s a good find waiting for you and you won t walk away empty-handed. Inside the store are the pricier books that are also organized by category. It gets crowded in there pretty fast so it s not really ideal for extended browsing.
They didn't have what I wanted, but was able to refer to a high end dealer.
Friendly folks.
Honestly, I've never been into a book store like Brattle Book Shop and I think it has created a monster. Since returning home to Southern California, I've been on a mission to find any and all bookstores in the area (I've also purchased a decent amount of books to add to my pile of books I need to read since the trip).
The best part about Brattle Book Shop (aside from the number of books) was the average price per book. Having such cheap books available made me want to purchase every book that caught my eye (and trust me when I say there were SOO many books I wanted to immediately sit and read).
The alley next to the store with the super discounted books were organized randomly and it'll definitely take some time to get through. Once inside, each aisle will have different subjects and themes and will be organized alphabetically by author, but there are so many treasures within all of the rows of books. So if you're serious about finding some good books, definitely allocate a decent chunk of time in your day. I easily could have spent a good hour in one row of books.
Overall, this experience has made me realize how much I want to read so much more. It has definitely rekindled a fire I used to have burning for all kinds of books (the fire has definitely died down over the years of being engrossed in technology and work and school). I'm so happy that I took the time to visit this store and I highly recommend it to everyone in the area.
Book lovers will definitely want to make a stop into Brattle Book Shop. Outside of the shop, you'll find bargain books ranging from novels to old text books. Inside, are three floors of used, old and even older books. My favourite spot is the third floor where they house limited edition covers and book sets.
Oh my gosh it's a book store with great deals it's wonderful check it out.
Soooooo many awesome books so little time. Easy to get lost. If you cannot find something to read here, well look again. Keep coming here. It is where I will buy my holiday gifts.
Boston's best antiquarian shop. 3 floors of highly curated books for the collector inside, and an outside market of 1 and 3 dollar books for the bargain hunter
It is an amazing little-big bookstore filled with every book under the sun! It especially got a lot of old books and a whole floor of old and collectable books for sale. If you're in Boston, you have to check it out! They're always getting new books and switching them out, so if you don't find what you're looking for, come back next week.
It is a wonderful place to spend an hour just looking. Many out of print books.
For me, every time I go to Boston it is mandatory. Different bookstore! There are books that are specially used. It is essential to dive on the shelves if you want to find something interesting. Plus the prices are great and they have a lot of rare books. They also have outside shelves where everything is $ 5, $ 3 and $ 1. Great place for a book hunt!
Seems like a historical book place. They had wall showed how much each of the vintage books were sold for. I got what I wanted.
awesome out door book collection and pretty well stocked science section.
A nice store with a good selection of used books (including some rare ones). I was very tempted to buy half a dozen today realizing, however, that flying cross country would be a little problematic.
A quaint little book shop with excellent prices and top notch service.
Very cosy shop! Famous tourist attraction in Boston.
Great variety of cheap books.
Very nice quaint bookshop. It is always nice here to stroll a bit along and browse through the various books.
Whats not to love about a great used bookstore? From the $5 books in the open alley (the shelves have there own little house roofs) to the extensive collection inside and rarer books upstairs, I get my love of books fix every time I come to visit from out of town.
So fun to browse the books, and it's a great photo opp.
Open air bookstore that was a real treasure hunt to find amazing books.
Another awesome find in Boston. Books starting at $1.00. And every genre under the sun.
A great little bookshop hidden away across from the commons. It s very quiet in there so I feel like I had to be extra quiet. It s a small store so you will probably say lots of excuse mes but there are some great finds and the prices are very reasonable. A must stop in if you re in the area!
Super cool shop, has all sorts of hidden gems. Make sure to check the rare book floor.
Rest place for good books cheap. I love to hold a book still.
Nice book selection. Rare books room is open to the public and fun for history buffs. Wish staff was a little more friendly
Old school bookstore, we always stop by when we get to Cambridge.
Cool old book shop with a decent selection. Great prices on used books too!
Probably the best all around rare and used bookstore in the country!
I always find something I didn't know existed. Great store!
Great deals outside in their carts and excellent selection or rare and hard to find books inside.
Absolutely delightful. Found some real gems in the outside space, as well as some really amazing topical books about Boston and the area. For a book lover, this is a *must go*. I brought a visiting friend and loved how close it is to downtown.
A fun and interesting place to stop by, perusing used, rare and unusual books across every topic you can think of. A Boston institution!
Very wide, eclectic selection. Clean. Knowledgeable, friendly staff. Very fairly priced, most HB titles I looked @ 10$. ABE-listed.
This place sell a variety of used books. Price is alright inside the store. The good deals are the ones they sell outdoor next to the store. Usually range from $1-$5.
A very unique store and must see for book lovers in Boston!
An amazing book store, with more things than I could ever imagine.
Constantly revolving inventory. I visit once a month and always find a few new treasures!
More casual then Commonwealth Books, and a larger selection. Great place to spend an afternoon exploring for all kinds of finds. I'm pretty fond of the vintage book on North American skiing I found here.
Great place to find used books and the prices are really good. A great place to go for avid readers.
Just like Powell's Bookstore, but in downtown Boston. Great prices for great reads
Excellent selection and low prices. I found two books, like new, for very reasonable prices. Where I would have spent over $50 at a chain, I spent under $20 here. Only downside is that it is hard to find specific titles, as most of the books are pre ISBN (I think that is the correct term).
This is a great bookstore! Staff is very knowledgeable and friendly.
Good place for hardcore book readers. Not so much for casuals.
This place is a step back in time to dusty shelves, curious classifications, and that musty smell. A mixed bag of treasures and trash that spills into the adjacent lot as weather allows. Generally inexpensive though no steals.
Where else can you be amazed by the selection available. Plan to spend an hour here, as you leave realize you spent so much more.
A great locally owned used book store. A wide variety of books, both inside and the outdoor section for the discounted ones.
I believe they will do their best to to special order specific books.
This book store has been run by at least 2 generations of family.
I like this shop sometimes just to see what's new.
Not much of a reader myself, but they offer a variety of books for friends and family who love to read
Old antiquated, very rich in old books. You will not be disappointed. It's a book store out of time. Head to the top floor to be thrown out of time.
If I could give it a hundred Stars, I would ! the most wonderful bookstore in Boston and surroundings
This place makes my book-worm heart oh so happy !!!
After years of searching for a copy of Falling Angel, I stumbled across it here, outside on the discount racks. For a buck.
It's a solid little bookstore and has a really nice concept: beautiful outdoor setting with cheap books ranging from $1 to $5.
However, there is no sense of organization, so you have to browse from beginning to end to find what you want. It's an odd mishmash of books. And of course, full of people who are more interested in having a photo op for Instagram than actually look at books.
Cool outdoor display with books ranging from $1 to $3 to $5
I loved finding this book shop during one of my last days in Boston. I literally could not get out of there in time for dinner with my boyfriend. I bought an old edition of Vanity Fair for only $1 and then much more. Even though I own an ereader for travelling, it can never beat having a hard covered book in your hands. This place deserves more recognition for it does book lovers like me a great service! <3 Can't wait to go back.
This is a very good place if you are a book worm looking for a rare find. This is your place.
I found the person who answered the phone to be an elitist snob. I have several books published in the 1600's, which are in good condition and was told, it depends where they were published. Instead of selling, I am going to donate them to the institutions that will be glad to get them.
Random used books with decent prices. Got a really old play book with the music sheets in them for $10. I found Maus for $5, which I''ve been meaning to get though!
Lots of quality books but impossible to find anything there
I felt like I was in their way. I also want to apologize to them for asking a question. I'm sorry.
