This place is amazing! We stopped in while driving through WV, and loved the food. Plus they support local farmers, and the menu is unique.

Laid back, artsy atmosphere with friendly service. The chicken pot pie was HUGE and tasty
The staff and atmosphere were great but the mac & cheese was cold, the fried chicken was mostly breading, the cod was way to greasy, and the fries were cold lumps. The mashed potatoes were good along with the peanut butter pie. The staff did cut our bill in half and were very nice about wanting us to try again...they would be the reason we might, just not for a long while.
My favorite place to eat in Charleston. Food is varied, distinctive, and delicious! Comfortable setting and friendly, efficient staff.
Great service & friendly staff. High quality food. Excellent daily specials!
The place has a great vibe and friendly staff. Also a great beer selection of local and craft brew. What drags it back is the gnats after my beer and when you order fries they really over do it with the salt.
As always... perfection on a plate. Bartender John was excellent...as always.
Great food, great wine, great atmosphere. Our waitress was absolutely incredible. Just a little pricey, so we save it for special occasions.
Disclaimer, I am just as embarrassed to write this review as I hope others are to read it. Upon entering the establishment we were mildly told our group over 5 people could not sit together. Okay, your establishment, your rules. Despite arriving 50 before closing, we felt that was a respectful amount of time to sit down and eat before the kitchen closed. After waiting for two separate tables to be cleared, we were told the wait for food might be 30 up to minutes. I m not sure a crystal ball could predict what we would all order, but I don t think Miss Cleo could predict that their Simple Spinach Salad would take an hour to prepare. Although our server was polite, and kept our water full, the kitchen s commentary was Hollywood script worthy in Rob Zombie s next b rated horror flick. If you d like to tune in to their color commentary, just go to the bathroom. The coverage in there is fantastic. All would be forgiven if the food was amazing, but you might want to skip this farm to toilet establishment for your next meal.
interesting place, food was plentiful. would go back
We stopped to eat at the bluegrass kitchen while driving through the area on I77. A refreshing alternative to fast food very close to exit 99. The food was fresh and the menu had a good number of options for vegetarians. Will remember this place for when we drive through again.
This place was fantastic. Fresh food, plenty of menu variety and a great beer list. Our server, Wes, was friendly and knowledgeable and provided great recommendations. The homemade bleu cheese salad dressing and beer cheese fondue were both excellent and I loved the artisan French dip. If you're in the area, don't miss out on eating here!
Beautiful vibe and delicious big portion plates! Bar tender gets 5 stars for the amazing cocktails.
Good food and atmosphere. Fried chicken is on point. Ricotta appetizer is top notch.
We stopped here in our way through Charleston and were glad we did. The food was very good, the place is cool, and our server was a real pleasure to spend an hour with.
Great food, cool little place downtown and a friendly staff. Good choices on tap. We stopped here while traveling from outta State and we were glad we did rather than a corporate place.
Good food, few options. Sorta deceptive to list this as having vegetarian options as there are very few.
The food is always perfect, the service is always welcoming and the vibe is always chill. Highly recommend!
These guys do flavor! Everything is spectacular. Pork chop was out of this world with great mustard sauce and sweet potato mash. Za'atar chicken was charred perfectly and the chickpeas couldn't have been better. Cauliflower bread, tomato soup, everything was top notch. Great gluten free options, great environment, great music (that wasn't too loud... Just great background). Prices reasonable for quality and quantity. Come here hungry, leave pickin' and grinnin'.
Shrimp and grits were killer, the home made jam was rich, and even the coffee was top notch. Good service with nice attention paid to the kids. We'll be back next time we come through WV.
Great little restaurant with an interesting atmosphere, great food, staff, bar and reasonable prices. I had a very nice experience here as a first timer and would gladly return and recommend it to anyone. Their filet would get rid of any blues you had going in, trust me.
Bluegrass rates five stars but it's noisy and begging for some sound treatment. Pls fix!
Absolutely great food, taking a star off due to price and careful about the service time when theyre busy if your in a rush.
AH-mazing. That s all I ve got to say about this place.
I just moved here from Dallas, and was a little worried about my culinary options in WV.
I shouldn t have been concerned.
Bluegrass Kitchen is beyond any dream I could possibly have for a culinary masterpiece.
So let s break it down, shall we?
John, the Awesome incredible guy that took care of us gave some great suggestions, and steered us through the menu since we were newbies and he absolutely did no wrong. He was perfect and I am fully planning on adopting him if he s up for it!
We were going to just have one appetizer, but the ladies next to us got the house fries, so we had to do that too. They were delicious. Home made, hot and fresh, with great dipping sauce. I mean seriously, bacon aioli?? How can you go wrong there?
We also had the artichoke hearts which were superb.
I had the shrimp and grits, ole ball and chain had the pork chops.
Oh. My. Gawd.
That s all I gots to say about that. So damn good, I won t go into complete detail here but try it for yourself. You can thank me later.
And the final act? Cause you know, I had sooo much room left for dessert.
I swear on my first bite, I heard angels weep.
And I m Catholic, so I definitely know when I hear a weeping angel.
This place is so damn good, I m going back as soon as I can.
I don t know why you re still reading a damn review.
Go there now. NOW.
Cause if I beat you there, I can t promise I ll leave anything left for you.

We were traveling though the area and found this place on Google... Great food and very good service. My wife has several allergies and the worked with her to find food that she could have... Very good experience....
This is one of my favorite places. I think there is something for everyone and it's so much better than a boring chain. Great drinks too!
Amazing food, loved everything I tried. The trout is fantastic. Love the friendly atmosphere too.
The food was delicious! Service was courteous and quick.
Bluegrass kitchen is great. They dont have an extensive menu, but what they do have is quite good. Also, you can't go wrong with the brunch!
The food portions were enormous and a bit salty. I honestly would have just like smaller food portions one person could finish (they charge you to split anyway) and better quality food. They are going for upscale southern comfort but don't quite hit the mark.
Locally sourced food, creatively and well prepared; good values on wines by the glass. Relaxed atmosphere and live music at the bar. Overall very good experience
The food and service were great and the atmosphere is very nice also ..I love their hamburger sliders and they always have a special wine to try..On the top of my lost for wonderful places.
What a gem! Outstanding, attentive service and the best chicken sandwich I have ever had. The green tomato chow chow was the perfect addition to an already amazing fried chicken filet.
Nice assortment of wines and craft beers as well.
What a shockingly terrible experience! This evening, my husband took myself and our 3 daughters out to enjoy a nice Mother s Day celebration. This was not our first time visiting Buttermilk and during all previous visits the food was fantastic and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. Tonight was simply appalling. We are both in the hospitality/food and beverage industry so I will spare you critiques based on a regional preference of sweetening collard greens or not (theirs were sickeningly sweet). I am assuming that the world as a whole can agree that broken gravy and chicken so dry that it was hard enough to make a sound when knocked on the plate should not be served and expected to be paid for. I think that we can also all agree that not having a single water glass refilled until an hour and a half into the meal is also just neglectful. The truly egregious act here was when my husband asked us to head to the car so he could speak with the manager about our meal and instead of an apology, he was told that we should have said something so the kitchen could recook what we were not enjoying. I don t disagree with the concept but this act is incredibly hard when the server is nowhere in sight until we are all mostly done eating what we could/what was somewhat edible on our plates. As a side note: the chicken brick was for my 3 year old and as I m sure most moms have experienced, when your toddler is hungry you give them anything as soon as possible to eat, so waiting for our server to show thinly veiled apathy was not an option. My husband pointed out that we were not given the opportunity at which point the Manager (which turned out to be AN OWNER!!!) told him that if we are that unhappy with the meal they could comp just the child s chicken or they could comp the entire meal and ask us not to return. My husband takes me out to show his appreciation for what I do for my family and we are served inedible food and when we try to tell them why not a single bite of chicken was consumed, we are threatened to be banned.
BLUEGRASS KITCHEN: As I was not there, I was not able to voice this so allow me to say this. I will happily never return. I would love to be contacted to have our meal comped.
Your group should be ashamed of yourself for robbing my family of an evening together that we do not often get a chance to have.
Good food. Filippo bar. Usually a warm welcome. Knowledgeable wait persons. One time the rotation was more important than my desire for another table. I did not want to sit in the window but despite only one other table being used that was where I had to be. So I left thinking I'd return later. Dined elsewhere though.
Excellent food and service. I went when they were slam packed during the teacher strike and we still had an awesome experience. I definitely plan to go back
I neither disliked or terribly enjoyed my experience. The waiter was awesome though and the restaurant clean. I had the meatloaf with the green tomato gravy. I take issue with the "green tomato gravy". It was one of the weirdest things I've ever tasted. Gravy is flour and fat. This was more like a chunky warm salsa. It didn't quite mesh with the dish very well. And the idea of putting meatloaf on a sandwich with the mashed potatoes as part of the sandwich is just messy. I ended up eating it open faced. Again, service was great but the food was just a little too "hip".
The place is airy, a bit hip looking and very down-home comfortable. The wild-something Alfredo was extremely good, the selection of beer was limited but included some good choices, and the waiter went out of his way to make sure the meal met my allergy-related needs. I will come back, for sure!
Good food and service, funky decor, wish they had a few less outs, but what we had was great.
Everything was delicious and the service was lovely, we will return.
Buttermilk blueberry pie was yummy. Good service and fresh food
Bluegrass has plenty of vegetarian options, which are delicious. If you go here, you should try their "tofu wings," it's unusual but really good. The veggie burger is also fantastic.
I love this place! Food is always great. I ve never had a bad experience and I ve been eating here for year! Everyone I recommend to go, loves it and thanks me later!!
Cute and friendly atmosphere with great food and live music
Tried the brunch menu and it was great!
We had the Breakfast Potato Skins and the Deep-Dish Quiche du jour. Both were excellent.
Noodles were cold, soggy, and lacked flavor. We only saw our server a total of 3 times -- once to take our order, again to bring out the food, and once for the check. Poor service and gross noodles made for an unpleasant dining experience. Plus, the menu isn't exactly appealing to the average Joe, as it lacks variety. It's a shame because the restaurant is so cute, hip, and conveniently located. Perhaps a second chance is in order, but my first visit was very displeasing.
Loved the food ... trout chitlins grits toasted kale... Nice 3 piece Jazz band playing tonight.
Love this place, awesome food atmosphere is cool. The live music is always a treat !! Green tea is very unique, very yummy almost a trix flavor.
Met a friend here for a drink. There was a really good group playing in the bar. I tasted the fresh local chanterelle mushrooms. They'd unfortunately been deep fried and were heavy and greasy. The flavor of the deep fry fat overwhelmed the flavor of the mushrooms.
I've eaten meals here several times and have always been more than pleased, so I'll count this as a one time mistake.
Enjoyed the artistic environment. Fresh food was awesome but you have to have the desserts. Parking is around back for those unfamiliar with the area.
My first experience at BK was a bit of a misadventure.Due to some momentary lack in judgement, my dinner partner ordered tofu wings as an appetizer-not a great idea, as he does not like tofu, and I do not like wings. Basically being fried sticks of tofu, these would not have been that bad if they didn't taste like they'd absorbed a lot of pickle juice (no pickle came with the tofu). However, this did not dampen my hopes for the main course, as I felt like that was more our fault for ordering that dish. I got the veggie burger, and my company got a chicken sandwich. It tasted like they might have put liquid smoke on the fries and bbq sauce in the ketchup-which by chance happen to be two of my least favorite flavorings. The sandwiches were nothing exciting. Even with my disappointment in the food, I was inclined to like BK solely based on the friendly staff and wonderful atmosphere. The pricing is very pretentious I felt that was a bigger negative than the food, which I would have been willing to try again if it wasn't for the cost, and the only reason I gave 2 stars instead of 3.
Love it. Food is top notch. Some locally sourced ingredients combined with fresh takes on traditional meals create a fine menu. The environment is quite artsy and comfortable. The beer selection is great with plenty of variety. They have a wonderful all you can drink mimosa or Bloody Mary brunch. Service is above average. Try the blueberry buttermilk pie. It is excellent.
The place really sucks the food is old The waitresses are mean bad atmosphere
Delicious with generous portion size. The shrimp and grits was to die for and the eggs Bene too. Love local eats Bluegrass Kitchen food made fresh!
I love this restaurant and they have very good vegetarian options.
Wow. I loved my Vegetarian Burger. The place was soo interesting and informative. Postings for all the concerts in the area. Beautiful decor that fit the theme. I had a gin and tonic that was great and they have a wonderful selection of drinks to choose from. I definitely am putting this one on the must do when in Charleston list . I loved that the whole staff was friendly and helpful but not intrusive.
Kinda neat, kinda quirky but very cool. The waiter was nice, food was excellent. There seems to be a lot of what I would call old hippies there the night I was there, so that's my kind of crowd. Was a good pleasant experience. Slightly pricey but the food was delicious. One of those sayings - you get what you pay for. Well worth the trip
fun, cool and hip; a young, vibrant and energetic feel; one half is bar and the other is restaurant. lots of local inspired art is presented in this nest, old building with a stamped tin ceiling, old wood floors and exposed brick. diverse menu taking classics and putting a twist on them. salads, sandwiches and dessertsare available in the afternoon and then later entrees are made available. we very much enjoyed the food and the atmosphere. i hope that the next time we're in town we can catch some live music or an open mic night
Killer food, great service and ambience. It's conveniently located, not far at all from an interstate exit. The beverage selection is excellent; there's sure to be a match for whatever food you order. Oh, and that food? It's going to rock your taste buds right out of that little pink hole in your face which will be forever changed. Better eat your favorite foods now while you still have a chance to enjoy them, because after this, you won't be able to appreciate anything else.
Had brunch with a friend last weekend and it was AMAZING. My Bloody Mary was well made, and the shrimp and grits was a delicious and hearty portion. I tried it with the potato pancake instead of the poached egg and it was great. The restaurant had a nice, eclectic vibe and the big open windows in the back near my seat let in good natural light. Great place to go on a Sunday afternoon.
In town visiting my dad from time to time and we always look for healthy restaurants. Service is good, friendly and prompt and food delicious! Seasonal recipes with great flavor! Had a veggie burger on our last visit and would have been better if they offered gluten free buns. Hope they realize it's not necessary to make everything fresh in house. Udi's make good gluten free breads.
Very well prepared American fare at reasonable prices in a casual setting. Had pork chop which was quite tasty and bigger than most pork chops. Left well satisfied. Will go back when in Charleston, WV.
Brunch is good. Lunch is good as well. Nice people. Love that it s on the east end of Charleston. They make great drinks
Excellent food and great service. Cool live music playing. What's not to like?!
Won't be eating there anymore. They've made it clear that they associate hate and bigotry with a fundemental right.
I'll take my business elsewhere, gladly.
We liked the funky Austin vibe. The salads were nice and fresh. We had the pork chop dish and it was quite good. Once the live music started it was very relaxing. The kitchen did seem a bit challenged with the Saturday night crowd.
I was nervous about their being many vegetarian options while visiting Charleston, but this place was so good! The meatatarians that I was with liked it as well.
Excellent food every time! Would be 5 stars except that they say a rowdy group right next to us and we couldn't talk or hear what the other person was saying.
Best chow in Charleston; locally owned spot, featuring organic and local ingredients
We love Bluegrass Kitchen. The fried chicken at dinner is fantastic. Everything on the brunch menu is worth trying. Go try it! You won't be disappointed.
Great food and it was quick. Clean, quiet place to eat.
I had a good waiter and all but the food was not what I ordered and the wait for food was very long. It had nice vibes but it was hard to notice with my stomach growling. I was there for 2 hours! I hated the food and so did my niece. I may have just came at the wrong time and ordered the wrong thing!
Absolutely amazing food and service!! Awesome Sunday Brunch!!
Great place :) great music. I always love listening to music here on my days off
