The steak is great and needs to be booked in advance
Way way way overpriced, no view and a dirty toilet. Never again
Food was great, if a bit on the pricey side. Didn't try any starters, but the beef, sauce, side dish, and dessert were very well done. Great list of wines and other spirits available. It's a tad dark inside.. But that's just my personal preference, it certainly makes for a very cozy ambience
Lovely meal, good service but book before you go as they were turning people away on a Wednesday night
If you are planning a special dinner in Launceston this is one of the places to go. The Cape grim beef is amazing
Overpriced and underwhelming. While the produce was nice, it was handled inexpertly. Our steaks were slightly overcooked while our carrots were way too hard. There was still quite a lot of gristle on the meat which could have been better butchered. Service was highly inexperienced, with our waiter spilling beer on our table as he poured it (and not offering to replace it) and another sloshing oil from a side dish onto the floor, and narrowly missing my partner's shirt, as she cleared the table. Apart from this clumsy service, the whole enterprise feels very corporate, as does Stillwater which has the same owners. Not recommended.
This is our favourite Launceston restaurant - impeccable service, timing of food and quality of food makes it impossible to rate it too highly. Outstanding wine list complements the experience. An absolute must do culinary experience when visiting this wonderful part of the world.
Ate a beautifully succulent rib eye tonight. Relaxing and warm atmosphere as well.
We arrived for an early dinner and were seated promptly. This was our final meal in Tassie which we had been looking forward to. We ordered a Cape Grim rib eye on the bone (to share), medium rare, shima wasabi and a glass of pinot noir. We waited about 30 mins for the steak to arrive. When it did, we were surprised at how well-done the steak looked. In some parts, it was very charred. Not sure how they got it so wrong. During our trip, we had actually bought some cape grim rib eye on the bone and King island sirloin from a deli, pan fried it with a salt rub and it was infinitely better than what we had to eat here. Overall, I would highly commend the service which gets 5 stars but the food was 1 star, very disappointing.
Coming from Sydney and hearing the hype about local produce I was excited. If you like well cooked but over priced and under seasoned food this is the place for you. 650gm steak for the price of 760gm (between 2), an over cooked octopus tentacle not well prepared well cooked calamari and to top it off an $18 creme brulle cooked the night before. I attempted to insult them with a less than $5 tip. The waitress was grateful, eep. The fact it has higher than 4 stars is bizarre!!
My favourite restaurant in Launceston. If you like steak and red wine, look no further.
Food was fantastic with the steak cooked perfectly. Desserts hit home too. A bit on the pricey side and the general ambiance was a bit flat. Save it for special occasions, but definitely give it a go.
by far the best dining experience my wife and I have ever had. everything was perfect.
We did not enjoy our meal here whilst we don't mind paying extra for quality our Scotch fillet was very fatty and the entrees were quite small for the price. Thought overall very over priced and the unisex toilets were also not clean not that staff can help that. Our waitress however was outstanding 5 stars for her service.
Black Cow Bistro the result is very disappointing beef steak, and I have to say that they become overly cooked and the appearance of the steak is burned! The dessert is general this price is unacceptable but the service is amazing.
It's a higher class restaurant in sleepy Launceston. Excellent service by Emily! We had a great time with little interruption. The only thing I wished for was greater I sight I ro their menu & recommendations by the staff. So much to choose from, but we never missed a beat, with a local white for the oysters, local pinot for the steaks, and dessert wine with their amazingly presented desserts! thank you, we will be back!
GREAT AMBIENCE! The service was prompt and the food was perfect. The Wagyu steak was Amazing for sharing. Would definitely come again.
World class food, amazing service and beautiful atmosphere.
Best restaurant in Launceston, possibly Tasmania, possibly Australia. Starting with the architecture of the building and right down to the cut of my meat to the delicious mushroom sides and the fantastic wine selection. However if you are vegetarian I don t think you would appreciate the menu quite as much as our table did.
Fantastic meal very delicious although staff member was learning english and needed a bit more help
The review can be wrapped up in three words -
BEST. STEAK. EVER.
The marbling was beautiful. The doneness was precise. The charring on top was just right. It was juicy. The steak knives sliced through it like butter. The steak just melted in your mouth. I left the restaurant completely satisfied. The service was friendly. The place was cozy. It was busy, so do make a reservation before you go. If you're in Launceston and if you like steak - don't miss out. You will regret it!
Heard really good things about this place but was really disappointed, they have awards hanging on the walls about having the best wine list in Tasmania but their wines by the glass were horrible and the wines by the bottle were overpriced. The steak was nothing amazing in the quality of meat or the quality of the cooking of the steak. Lastly the service was average at best... overall not worth it and not what you expect from an apparently high quality Tasmanian restaurant
The Black Cow Bistro, located 70 George St, Launceston, Tasmania. This relaxing modern fine dining restaurant is housed in what was an Art Deco butchers shop, sourcing the best steaks in Tasmania.
The decor of this smartly attired restaurant has Mellow wooden floors contrast strikingly with dark stain tables and chairs and the predominately creamy walls are accentuated by medium and charcoal grey accent walls that tone beautifully with a long grey marble counter front . One wall has colourful murals depicting the signature Black Cow , and the colours blend skilfully with the comfortable bench seats below, all creating a pleasing visual ambience. From the entree menu we ordered a tray of assorted fresh oyster. A bowl of seared Tasmanian scallops, a crisp skinned pork belly, a white fish sashimi. For mains we chose from an exhaustive range of steaks, with a delightful range of tasting sauces, roasted vegetables and salads. Our total experience from the food quality and presentation was superb, along with the wine on offer and table service, could not be faulted.
This was my second time coming black cow and the quality remains as good as 5 years before! Service of waiters were nice and helpful, the sauce given matches well with the beef and of course the beef was the main highlight. The dessert we tried (parfait with Riesling jelly) was intricate and refreshing to the palatte!
Excellent quality dining with exception service. Highly recommended
I went here with my partner a few years ago and I m still dreaming of the steak I had. Yes, it s a little pricey but it s worth it and great for special occasions.
The foods was amazing, so delicious. Outstanding.
Me and my partner tried to come in to the restaurant without booking, but they didn t let us in because the restaurant was full (all booked).
Then, another night I really wanted to go there and asked my partner to make a booking.
Finally, after all that drama we finally got the table and tried the delicious foods.
It s really worth it.
You guys just need to call before you come to the restaurant to make sure you get table.
A group of us were here in September after reading some good reviews. Oh my, the food is spectacular! The steak was cooked to perfection and service is very good as well. Would definitely recommend this place if you love steaks
We orderd cape grim rib eye and scotch fillet. The beef was good , and waitress are nice.
Best steak I ve ever had. 200g eye fillet with wasabi on the side was next level. Sides were delicious.. staff were very friendly, helpful and attentive. Thank you Black Cow!
I was happy with my dining experience but it was not flawless. The food was all good. I'm not sure why this restaurant doesn't have air conditioning. My partner and I walked in from the apartment we were staying at and I thought I had walked into an oven when entering. The waiter was too slow on keeping my wine glass full. As friendly and knowledgeable of the menu as he was, I can't forgive that.
Easily the best steak I've ever had in all my travels! A tad pricey at $35/100g with a minimum order of 500g - but it's common to share a 600g+ steak between two people. Yes that's still expensive but it was SO good I'll be back for more!
Easily the best steaks I have ever had in my entire life. Crispy, juicy, perfectly done and just a joy to experience. Plus, they have a wonderful selection of Tasmanian Whisky and very knowledgable staff to guide you through those and the rest of the menu too. In the 4 days I was in Launceston, I dined here twice, it's just that nice.
Menu was well designed.and the meat was delicious. Wine list was plentiful and very reasonably priced.
Excellent place for fine aged steak, do make appointment ahead to avoid disappointment
Great entrees and steaks, however dessert was a let down. The creme brulee was far too eggy and the blow torched sugar was not the expected crispy texture - was instead more of an odd soft texture.. further the service was severely lacking. Was incredibly difficult to get the attention of wait staff...
Forget about looking at the price
The food is very beautiful and very tasty
Steak was cooked to perfection
And the waiter and his wine knowledge was great
OMG the food the chef it was sooo good the steak, i drowned in my saliva!!
One of the best steaks we ve had and after been to steak places throughout NSW, Victoria and Tassie, the steaks at Black Cow remain memorable. Love the sides including the Kim Chi which surprisingly goes well with the steak.
Amazing service , high quality produce , if your looking for an amazing beef steak in Launceston this is the place to go. Highly recommend.
Bad food, bad service and over price. No need to try.
Nice steak, got the private dinning room... Only had 1 potatoe option for a side, and is quite pricey
Staff are really professional. However difficult to hear over the noisy room.
Vegetarian option (singular) is really good - 5 stars for that alone.
Wine is good, however expect to pay at least $20-$28 for a glass of the stuff.
Cocktails are cheap compared to wine $21 for a Espresso martini, however was not impressed.
The food is expensive but average, not worth the price...
The fillet was 350G and cost $ 56. The meat was delicious.
Suggest the wagyu! Perfect! And service also great!
I loved the Black Cow! The food was all amazing and the service was immaculate. I had Oysters Kilpatrick for entree and they were the best I have ever had. The steak was delicious and the side salads also. The cocktails were perfect as well. Overall my experience was wonderful, thankyou!
An oasis for two hungry travellers. Thank you for an amazing meal, fine service and warm hospitality.
Perfect food, lovely service.
The chefs obviously respect the produce and it is reflected in the food.
Everything was right. Food ambiance and the service was second to none
Well aged Rib-eye, chargrilled to perfect medium-rare, I can't ask for more.
What an amazing steak and great selection of wines. I am always so impressed. Thank you
This was one of the best dining experiences of my life. Matt was our server. His guidance and wisdom was bottomless. His service was professional and warm. The whole experience was refined without being pretentious.
Had the scotch and eye filet. Below average on both accounts.
Scotch filet was over sinewy, with an inconsistent cook throughout. Eye filet was rather dry and just not flavourful.
Redeeming was the flavour and texture of crust along with the potato gratin.
The only downside was that i could only get a full 600 grams of the premium wagyu steak cut sashimi style instead of a smaller portion.
The pork belly I had instead was divine and the porterhouse I had was decent but definitely not the best I've had.
Ideal for about 5 people to share the wagyu between.
Very pricey but the sides are amazing. My steak was poor quality but given the high praise in other reviews I'll give them the benefit of the doubt and hope it was a once off poor quality cut of meat.
Particularly delicious steak! The cheese in the front dish is delicious. The mushroom with the side dish is also a good one, the most important is the beef meat. Nothing to say, come back!
Meat and cheese Delicious! There were locals and tourists. I was able to order safely with kind customer service even when ordering.
I think this could be one of the best steaks ive ever had!!! Its crispy on the outside and just perfectly juicy. The side dishes are a little bit pricey though. So i had the crispy pork and the porter house. Which was just perfect for one. Friendly staff and nice atmosphere for a romantic dinner. Highly recommended. Make sure you book online before coming here.
Nice food to have steaks and the service is great, although a bit expensive.
Very well prepared food. I shared the wagyu and it was well worth it. Side items were enjoyed and the fondant chocolate cake to finish off was superb. I would visit again!
Nice steak. Good to share with group for different cut
Good:
Friendly staff
Great quality meat
Clean bathroom
Not so good:
Expensive wine list
Pricey but worth it. Loved every bite of my steak and potato with truffle sauce.
Are there more than 5 stars?! We need them. Restaurant. Amazing. Ambiance. Amazing. Staff. Amazing. Food. Amazing. Beverage selection. Amazing. Can't begin to tell you. Just go down there. All of it. Spectacular.
Entree was great, gin and wine were nice, sides were tasty, steak sauce - truffle bearnaise was the hero.
Steak was terrible. Extremely chewy. $54 for a scotch fillet with a block of scalloped potato. The only steak house I've been to that I wouldn't recommend to order the steak...
Delicious scotch fillet. Definitely get the broccoli. Not the best list of wine by the glass but the bottle list is amazing.
Spectacular steak with sublime sauces and sides and extensive wine options. Relaxed atmosphere and friendly service.
The place is not big but the atmosphere is comfortable and relaxed. The food I ordered was delicious. The escort was friendly.
The service was very good with a very attentive and friendly waitress.Ate here on a Monday night it was busy which was a good sign. For starters we had the sashimi and the steak tar tar both were amazing. For mains we ordered a porter house steak each one rare with truffled beranisse sauce
Excellent food and service. Steak beautiful and local wine perfect. You won't be disappointed.
We arrived Launceston late at night, only 'The Black Cow' was still open serving food! Their food + service was perfect
