You pay so much and some how feel like you didn't pay enough. Service is of such a high standard and the experience was absolutely faultless. All of the staff were so knowledgeable. This is a dining experience you have to have

This place is small, charming and bookings are essential as it is by far the busiest place in Launceston. Being a bit of a steak-phene I can certainly verify that this steak joint delivers on a perfectly cooked medium rare eye fillet and the service, ambience and the little things are done very well.

Flawless dining experience at the Black Cow. It was brilliant from start to finish and it is a must do when in Launceston (or surrounds). Book a table at this cosy, French-style bistro. Try the oysters (very fresh and tasty), the sashimi and the eye fillet. All spectacular. The truffle sauce is to die for. Desserts fantastic too. Staff friendly, welcoming and have good knowledge of their products.

One of my favourite steak restaurants in Australia and one I always try and visit when in town. Great friendly and attentive staff who know their stuff. Good wine list and amazing steak!!! They match it perfectly with a great selection of side and entrees. The dessert menu looks great too but I've always been to full and satisfied to try any of it.

So my knowledge of the Launceston dining scene was minimal so when I took a recommendation for the black cow. And what a cracking suggestion! I had one of the top 3 steaks of my life. Wine was fantastic, sides were tasty and the overall service was top notch. It s premium priced and worth it for a premium night out in Launceston.

I had the best steak I've ever had in my entire life, but the service started off well, but then drastically declined. After my entree arrived, no one checked in on me about my meal, asked if I needed more wine. After I finished eating and even moved my plate to make it clear, it took over ten minutes for anyone to ask if I needed anything else or the check. I was so disappointed by the service that I just wanted to get out of there. I wish I had had cash, so I didn't have to waste time watching servers walk by and other parties enjoying their meals and being hovered over.

The best steak you will ever eat. As an amateur worldwide steak-eater you can take my word for it that the New York strip here is the best you'll get anywhere. Wine list is brilliant. Any of the side dishes are worth a try. Ignore the prices on the menu - the quality is worth it. Always cooked exactly as you order it. Top 3 restaurants in Launceston.

Mum booked this restaurant for my 30th and was floored by the service and quality of the meals. They placed us at the most private and scenic location of the front end of the restaurant with a generous street view. The entree of the sourdough bread and Tasmanian butter was delectable. Comfort food at the very definition, toasty bread and velvety butter. The steaks were cooked to perfection, having ordered a medium rare Scotch fillet myself and mother ordering the well done eye fillet. Dessert was the topping of the experience, with a very creamy creme brulee served with an excellently tangy rhubarb pastry on the side. Highly recommend this dining experience to anyone after scrumptious steak, great wine and yummy dessert. Additionally, this joint had the best and cutest mash potato I have ever experienced. If it as offered as a main, I would order in a heartbeat. The layers of potato were hearty and sauce added the needed flavour burst.

Fabulous service and great steak! There's no vegetarian options so my partner ordered two sides which they served on one plate as a main with potato gratin (just like the steaks) - very impressed! We were glad we booked in advance as it was busy for the two hours we were there.

We were in the private room in the back which was perfectly drowning out the skins from the rest of the restaurant. The waitress was professional and helpful. The menu is limited but in the best way. The cut off meat I chose was cooked perfectly and the sides were a good match. Desert was amazing and coffee was good. Since we arrived after 530pm parking was free and right out front. Not a restaurant for vegetarians/vegans but they do have fish options.

We went here for my birthday and it didn't disappoint food wise. The meal was excellent. The steaks and sides were cooked perfectly. Kudo's to the kitchen. Wine list as normal in places of this caliber was overpriced but that is normal. Service was average. OK but nothing to write home about. Very enjoyable evening, would highly recommend.

Fantastic steak and restaurant! Staff were very friendly and knowledgeable. Knocking a star off for the misleading menu: on the night I visited the steaks priced per 100g were only available as over 500g, which limited me as a solo diner to very few options. Still recommend though!

My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed the food. Although expensive, it was well worth the price. Not a place you'd eat everyday obviously. The service was excellent too. We went with our 18 month old child and when she became cranky and loud they brought some colouring in stuff. Very thoughtful. Also, before it was time to order they explained how the menu worked and asked us out preferences before making suggestions.

A great meal. Started with a amaretto sour cocktail, great seafood entree and the beef was fantastic. The sides and desserts just made this meal fantastic. Impressive wine selection and service was impeccable.

Extremely pricy for horribly chewy, dry steak. Staff were clueless.

Best not to waste your time and money at this joint, clearly more interested in getting your money than providing good food nor good hospitality.

These guys are the best. Everything is amazing. The staff are absolutely incredible, and the steaks are as good as I have had anywhere. But, and this is hard to say for a steak lover; the sides are probably the best part... they are some world class vegetables. Amazing work team. I'll see you again soon.

Highly recommend! Amazing food and service. Steak was cooked exceptionally and Ethan was a pleasure. We were so impressed we came back the following night. He also knows how to make fantastic cocktails. If this is your first time in Launceston, make this your first stop for dinner.

Food Phenomenal, male waiter was attentive and gave great recommendations. Perfect special night out however left soured by being presented our bill at 9.pm BEFORE receiving our ordered deserts and desert wines. Flippant apology given by another member of wait staff and took payment immediately after requesting a single short black and expecting an apolgetic on house small sip, rudely happily stung $10 for a sip of coffee. Left us both with bitter taste after an awesome meal with sweets. Seems customer service is overlooked at such a high end establishment

I was looking forward to dining at this place we had never been before. Waited an hour for our main and after we finished main they took our plates away and gave us the bill. We had requested the desert menu and they told us basically that we had to go cause they needed the table we were so stunned my husband was not impressed. All I can say this will be the first and last time never again. Very rude!!!

If you fancy your beef steak burnt or non-existent...

If you fancy your beef steak burnt or non-existent service, the black cow bistro might just be the right place for you. I seldom give poor reviews, but our dining experience at the black cow was so wrong that I can hardly ignore it. We intended for this dinner to be a finale of sorts for our trip to Tasmania and it turns out so terribly disappointing.

My wife and I love beef steaks and have eaten steaks from different parts of the world. I have to say that this has to be the worst beef steak that we have eaten in our lives. We asked for medium rare doneness for both of our steaks and they turn out to be overcooked and the exterior of the steaks were burnt! I could not understand, for the life of me, how you can overcook and burn a medium rare doneness.

The service was essentially non-existence; little to no attention was given to us. Even if we were served, the waitress and waiter were impolite and impatient, to say the least. We have had many fine dining experiences and the service here has to be the most disappointing. What's even more unbelievable was that the waitress hinted for a tip at the end.

So in short, overcooked and burnt steaks coupled with poor service left us with a terrible end to our trip to Tasmania. We have no problem affording a $50-60 per person or even tipping a 10-20% if our dining experience was great. But this place is just too unbelievable. There is definitely a much better option for steaks in Launceston.

A mediocre steakhouse having what you expected. The food is nice but nothing spectacular. I had a beef tartare and told the waitress it was spicy upon being asked. To my surprising, she only said "Oh really? Wasn't it" and nothing further. If the restaurant did value the customers' views, I certainty expected a better feedback. Nonetheless, a place may visit if you are looking for a steakhouse.

I went there recently for the waygu 7 plus score steak they have on their menu. I was fairly disappointed with what I ordered. It was quite chewy and rare enough to see there wasnt any marbling as would be expected. I have had waygu steak in japan before this and was expecting something similar here. I would not buy wagyu steak from this restaurant at $35 per 100 grams unless they are prepared to show you the marbling in the steak prior to cooking and compare that marbling against the marble score in the Australian standards. Also you cant just buy from them a waygu piece of steak in say 200 grams, well for me the smallest size available at the time was a 400 gram piece, it ended up being a very expensive and unsatisfying dinner. I'm not sure what their other steaks are like, I know the service there is excellent, but dont buy wagyu until you check it has the marbling that its advertised it has.
