Berkeley Symphony: A Return to Joy with Music Director Joseph Young
Berkeley Symphony is a world-renowned orchestra that has been entertaining audiences for over 50 years. The symphony was founded in 1969 by Kent Nagano, who served as its music director until 2009. Since then, the symphony has been led by a series of talented conductors, including Joana Carneiro and now Joseph Young.
The Berkeley Symphony is known for its innovative programming and commitment to contemporary music. Each season features a mix of classic works from the orchestral canon and new compositions from emerging composers. The upcoming 21/22 season promises to be no exception, with an exciting lineup of concerts that will showcase the talents of both established and up-and-coming musicians.
Under the leadership of Music Director Joseph Young, the Berkeley Symphony will perform works by some of the most celebrated composers in history, including Stravinsky, Ravel, Prokofiev, Beethoven and more. These performances promise to be unforgettable experiences that will transport audiences through time and space.
One highlight of this season's program is Stravinsky's "The Firebird," which tells the story of Prince Ivan's quest to rescue his beloved princess from an evil sorcerer. This ballet score is one of Stravinsky's most famous works and showcases his unique blend of Russian folk melodies with modernist harmonies.
Another standout performance will be Ravel's "Bolero," which builds slowly from a simple melody into a thunderous climax that leaves audiences breathless. This piece has become one of Ravel's signature works and remains one of the most popular pieces in classical music today.
Prokofiev's "Symphony No. 5" is another must-see performance this season. This work was composed during World War II when Prokofiev was living in Russia under Stalinist rule. Despite these difficult circumstances, Prokofiev managed to create a powerful symphony that captures both the tragedy and triumphs experienced during wartime.
Beethoven fans won't want to miss out on this season either! The Berkeley Symphony will perform Beethoven’s “Symphony No.7” which many consider as one his greatest masterpieces ever written! It’s full energy throughout all four movements!
In addition to these classic works, there are also several new compositions on this year’s program that are sure to delight audiences looking for something fresh and exciting! One such composition is “Aurora,” written by composer-in-residence Anna Clyne specifically for Berkeley Symphony Orchestra!
Overall it promises an amazing experience filled with joyous moments!
