Good place to get good BBQ. They have a huge parking lot to handle the large restaurant. This is important at lunch time when the place is full. The reason it's full? They have great BBQ. Lots of variety on the menu. Great wait staff who recognize their repeat customers. Very quick and attentive service. The food, again, is great. The last time I was there I had a sandwich plate that came with a large rib, a big pulled pork sandwich, fries, and iced tea. Their garlic bread is a very popular item because it is so delicious. This is one of my favorite lunch places in this part of the San Fernando Valley. My mouth is watering just thinking about this place.

Food was ok. I visited their website prior to visiting and thought the family meal looked good as well as a good value.. On arrival. .. I was informed it was only available for take out. Would have been nice if this exceptions were noted on their on the menu. My son's meal was forgotten until i inquired.

The best beef brisket sandwich I've ever had. Please get it with the garlic toast. I use over half a bottle of sauce cuz I love it.

We stop here every time we are in the SF Valley. I used to live close by and miss it so now that we are in OC. So much that we buy bottles of their sauce... It is that good.

My daughter gets the pulled pork but that is easier to get right than brisket or ribs. My whole family loves it here and look forward to it whenever we are even just passing by.

The service here is stupendous too. It feels like you are in the South with their southern hospitality. Some of the staff are the same people since the late 90's... Not sure if they own the place but if they do, kudos to you.

It has been years since ive eaten here... It was GREAT then with the old owners. I bet its just as good now tho based on the good reviews. Some of the reviews cannot be true as this place has been known for great food for what, 60yrs? It was recommended by an old friend who worked there when he was in high school some 55yrs ago, (Rudy Esposito) when the joint was new. And in the middle of nowhere... We went there and have always tried to go back at least once a year from Utah. Yes, its that good! And ya know what??? The food is cooked by people...and people have off days...IT HAPPENS! but NEVER have I EVER had a bad meal here in my 25yrs of knowin this place. So, to Mr Schatz, I thank you sincerely for keeping the legend going!!! and btw, for all them idiot racists out there? Black people and Mexicans are THE BEST COOKS. and the bear pit supports everyone. Love this joint. GET THE BEAR PIT SPECIAL...omg, it is allllll I get. The absolute BEST SANDWICH money can buy.

Even though they don't close UNTIL 10 the janitor was asking if we could leave so he could clean at 9:30. We were clearly still eating. If you are closing early, tell people before they order food; don't take money and then chase people out!!

I've been here once and I wasnt impressed. I'm all for finding authentic BBQ spots, and had heard that this was one of the greats. My boyfriend and myself decided to give it a try. We ordered a large plate and was told it would feed two. Lies. There were like two single ribs one hot link and two tiny sides. The prices were pretty steep so i assumef we'd be getting plenty of food. The only thing I really loved was there toast, garlicky and crisp. Luckily my bf didnt care for the toast so I filled up on that and gave him my rib.

From The early 1960's my family ate at The Bear Pit on Sepulveda Blvd. My father was an officer with LAPD, Foothill Division. The meals were wonderful. My favorite was The Bear Pit Special. Mom and Dad are gone
now. I live near Agoura Hills. Consider opening a store in the Westlake Village area, we need a GOOD BBQ restaurant out this way.

I came here recently and ordered the sliced beef BBQ and a side of beans, tater tots and garlic toast. I would say the beef bbq was bland, even tasteless with the original sauce added. The spicy bbq sauce is slightly better, but masks the flavor of the BBQ. The baked beans were delicious and I finished those, but the deep fried tater tots were just average. The garlic toast was soaked in butter and didn't taste as good as I hoped. The service was good, and attentive, but the food I ordered just wasn't very good. I really don't recommend this restaurant, even though it is a historic bbq place in the area.

First of all this restaurant has an amazing family ambiance and the service was phenomenal that alone deserve 5 stars, but sadly some of the food had brought it down to a 3 star. The "brisket" was basically chewing on rubber covered in their house bbq sauce, the pork ribs were cold and overcooked, and the turkey was almost like eating saw dust. Though not all of the food was bad. The chicken was phenomenal and well cooked, the garlic bread was delicious to the point where we had to order another round, the slaw a delicious refresher to the pallete, and their house bbq sauce has to be one of the best bbq sauce I've ever had. Overall not a terrible place, would go again.
