This place has surprisingly good Indian food. The patio is also amazing, but it can get a little smoky from cigs. Hipster bar where you will probably find insustry people in their twenties mixed with 30 somethings reading a book or drawing.
Cute neighborhood watering hole where the bartender knows everyone and they serve up a small but solid Indian menu.
Very disappointed, went with my partner and his co-workers; I went to order him his third drink of the evening and the bartender had the audacity to beg for a tip telling me that it's complimentary that people usually tip at bars and restauraunts. Thanks for the advice but I don't tip people that rudely suggest that I give them a tip, I give one if I feel necessary.
Good beers and good atmosphere, went a little later on a tuesday night but i get a feeling its busier early on.
A+ service from a neighborhood bar! I really enjoy the back patio year-round. It's covered and has heat lamps. The patio tables can get a little busy so if you want a spot I recommend arriving early. Staff and service is always impeccable. This place is going to get my business for the foreseeable future!
It's my local bar! It's my go to in my neighborhood.
Nice bar, good local beer selection. Great bartender, cool atmosphere.
the service here is nice and they have a patio both front and back you can sit at with friends
Yeah, solid like a Lucky Strike or a shot of Old Crow.
Stinky health hazard mold grows wildly inside there. Service trips hella hard off on the ID thing right when i walk in the joint #lackingmanners. Also, for a trendy bar, full of hipsters and stinky wet dog smell, you would think they would finally step it up and except cards and not just take cash. #onlycashhipstersandstinkybutt allowed.
Little over priced for a dive, didn't jive with me all that well.
Very relaxing. Had a beer with the gf before our flight and it definitely set the mood the rest of the trip.
best beer prices in the neighborhood (full on 22 oz glasses for less than other places charge for a 16). nice patio out back too.
Very awesomely divey. Great imperial pint deals, great out-front seating with umbrellas. Even better put back enclosed and heated out-back seating. I hear the curry is great, and sometimes vegan, but don't know myself.
Great dive bar with a nice covered outdoor space. 20oz pints during happy hour. The food is not great, but the beer and games make up for it.
Very friendly service. Basic games. Covered smoking patio
Best bar within walking distance of my home. Would give 10 stars out of 5 if possible.
Relax Have a drink
Laid back vibes, board games, a dirt cheap happy hour, solid cocktails, a great back porch, and the spot regularly plays top notch soul tunes on the system. My new favorite bar in Portland.
Excellent pub with superior staff that know how to tickle your whistle and put that fire in your belly.
Decent food and vegan options. Really cute patio in the back and great service.
Great ambiance & decor. Definitely worth a return visit. It has a cool interior.
Love this bar, super cool spot, kinda hidden and great for dates. Cash Only
Great spot to hang with some friends and relax. Chose between sidewalk tables or inside tables. I believe patio in back is very nice but we did not venture there on this trip. The bar is not buillt into a deep dark hole as the name implies, but rather is just a couple steps down from street level.
This is my go to spot in my neighborhood, bar tenders are always nice. Beer is cold. Happy Hour beers are 20 oz. They play great music. Great patio out back and some seating outside in the front as well. No matter how many people are in the pub, never wait long to grab another drink. They have a bunch of board game as well.
Very dark. Small aquarium. Three pinball machines. At least 8 beers on draft.
Usually quiet. Terrific spot with local art rotating, good beer selection and good food fast from their busy little kitchen. Dim and cool.
STRONG mold smell assaults you the moment you enter. How this place hasn't been shut down by health inspectors is far beyond me. It's literally in a basement and does not have a proper dehumidifier. When we went there was condensation running down the walls and again, serious mold smell. We lasted less than 30 seconds. The stench was too much, not to mention breathing in humid mold air is dangerous for your health. The building probably wouldn't even pass inspection to sell it.
Love the atmosphere, games and curry! I always feel at home when I'm here!
Wonderful drinks and welcoming staff, very chill outdoor covered porch heated when it gets cool. Board game tables inside, benches out front. Love this place
Splits the middle between hipster joint and friendly neighborhood dive. Actually it all works pretty well, depending on whose behind the bar.
Cool little joint. Love that they have all sorts of board games AND A CRIBBAGE LEAGUE!?!?! I will be signing up ASAP. Cribbage and cheap booze... What could be better?
It's a cute dive-y bar, but be aware that they only serve indian-style food. I went in with cravings for fries, assuming they served them, but it is Portland after all :)
I was in town for three days and stopped in on the third night. I wish I had been here every night! Friendly, relaxed atmosphere. The bartender is a delight.
This is my favorite bar in Portland that's not the Skyline Tavern. Such a great staff, stiff drinks and the best patio in southeast Portland.
Cute bar with tons of board games and outdoor seating.
Super chill bar, with nice smoking patio in the back.
Tasty Indian food and drinks, and a cozy dark bar. Dig it!
One word describes this place: dark. The bar is built into a historic extension of an old vintage Portland home's basement storefront - gives it a strange underground vibe similar to the basement of the Goodfoot (except no ugly carpet). Other than that, a typical Portland "neu-dive" bar, filled with your typical assortment of younger Portlanders drinking beer. Good fallback spot if Roadside is too full. They also take cards, which is a big deal if you're going to Roadside. I don't recommend the food at all, but had a good assortment of beer and pinball machines - not to mention board games, which can be a lot of fun!
Our favorite hangout for chill atmosphere, good beer and great Indian food
Really great service, wish I had got the girl's name. I got a combo bowl to go of Tikka Masala and the Bindhi; it was amazing!!
A dimly-lit, cozy atmosphere. Service was decent, drinks were generously poured, the "pints" were huge, and all decently priced. They have a covered, heated patio in back filled with bench seating, which is probably the best part of the bar. Would highly recommend if you're looking for a place with a dive vibe without dive service/clientele.
It's okay if you know what to expect but if you just wander in off the street it's not the best.
I'm not sure what to say. I like this bar, but its pretty standard. You won't be disappointed.
Local bar, great place to sit and drink with friends.
Yes, it's a dive tavern in the basement of an old house, but sometimes that exactly what you need. Good selection of beers, good snacks, and friendly bartenders.
Great atmosphere, perfect for a solo visit or a small group. Glad I stopped in.
A neighborhood pub...with Indian food and boardgames?! Hell yeah.
Cool little spot with pinball and a good sized heated patio! (Smoking ok) great attention to making their drinks, with excellent service to boot!
Clean with a good atmosphere. Fairly priced drinks.
Such a great little neighborhood pub. With awesome cheap Indian food, served hot and virtually instantaneously.
When you need good drink and a relaxing atmosphere, look no further. A great staple in a great neighborhood.
The Basement has location going for it. Close to Roadside, and uphill stumbling distance from the Jolly, it is a perfect spot for a true crawl between Belmont and Hawthorne. The place isn't as divey as it may seem, and sometimes feels more homey than the hipster feel you can sometimes get at Roadside. They also take plastic, which is a huge plus. Parking is a problem on weekends, but if you ride a bike, this is the area to ride/crawl in, just remember, they'll give a cyclist a DUII.
Basement has a great back patio, good beer selection and is always playing music I like. What more do you need in a bar?! Bartenders are friendly and you can tell they care about their jobs. This is a great place for a regular get together with your friends.
More like a sunken living room, really. But the beer was cold.
I'm in the middle on this one. As mentioned by others, it does have a dank atmosphere and smell. Friendly clientele. Makes one wonder how clean the place is.
I Like this place. Another friend and I stopped for an after work beer, little tiny place in the middle of a neighborhood. Stepped out the back door and there's a real nice large enclosed patio.
Don t put old fashioned on your menu if you don t know how to make one.
Can't speak highly enough of this establishment. If you like bars, go here. Duh.
Just a basic bar/pub, but the staff is friendly and it feels like one of those "everyone knows your name" places.
I used to come here with coworkers after a long day at work, and loved it! It's simple, has a nice patio, good selection of beers and cider, and good prices. I only wish I still worked close by, because I miss it!
