My daughter has attended Barnstable Academy for four years and is in her last year. Coming from a large school where gifted students and special needs students receive the most attention, I felt my daughter was "falling through the cracks." After attending BA for only a short time, she blossomed, regained her confidence and succeeded far beyond any expectation. I can honestly say this is due to the amazing teaching staff who become mentors and truly care about each and every student. They work to help students achieve their top potential and are available 24/7 for help of any kind. The school offers wonderful physical education, art, drama and journalism electives and students become like a family. The environment is one of respect, nurturing, and growth and I feel extremely grateful that we had such an amazing alternative to public school!
We switched to Barnstable years ago. The main reason was our child was having severe school anxiety. Barnstable was a life changer for us, and my child will be graduating high school from there! The staff is friendly, courteous, even fun to talk to. In our 8 years there, we've never come across an issue that wasn't tended to immediately, and with my child being involved in the solution process. I can't say enough about the teachers. My child has very close bonds with some of them. They are very attentive to each individual's needs and learning styles. My child always felt comfortable there, but still challenged academically. For us, the one-on-one learning option (cost extra, but worth it!) was a life savior when Algebra was introduced. We're grateful to have found Barnstable because of its friendly atmosphere, individual attention, close bonds among staff and students (and parents!), challenging academics with a reasonable amount of homework, and the extra guidance they receive learning executive functioning and other life skills.
I attended this school in the late 80,s. It was and still is a complete joke. If you want to achieve a diploma in Basket weaving... by all means, give them 25 grand a year.
Don't listen to the negativity of people who actually got kicked out of Bstable 20+ years ago. Its not the same school. Not even run by the same people. While it isn't what is was, its still a pretty specialized school and if your child has been referred there, chances are you should take a look and not listen to a disgruntled man who was kicked out of the school in 1990. Why so many people feel the need to negatively attack things on the Internet amazes me. And those that would even decide on their child's future based on a Google "review" maybe he's right. :) Anyway, good luck Barnstable of 2018 and beyond. You got me through some tough time and god only knows where I would be without Mr Blau, Mr Salembier and Barnstable of Glen Rock.
