Amazing place to spend the day, right in the middle of the city, makes for a great day trip that can lead to other activies as you explore the city
Great place for a quiet afternoon walk the displaying arts are of great selection.
Lots of light in this beautiful building. Gorilla Girls exhibit theme highlighted that only 1 female artist in 100 artworks are displayed, and how we are missing out on so much great female art.
Classical art was brilliant like depicting baby Moses found in Egypts nile river.
Kids section to create their own tiny cardboard houses and add to the mountain of houses.
Has a cafe but needs vegan options, does vegan hot chocolate.
Kiwis are free entry :)
Took me 2 days at 5 hours per day to read everything.
I visit the gallery about 6 times a year and am always impressed by the quality of the exhibitions. If an Aucklander I highly recommended getting a membership, to which you can add extras for $15 each. Often some workshops on for the kids (and adults).
Great gallery. Not too big, yet a great range of work. Kids really enjoyed it too.
Attend "Making Cardboard houses " very enjoyable with children
It is a great place to visit. Very large, with various exhibitions. The good thing is that 90% of the gallery is free for any visitor. Personally I loved the architecture of the place. They have exhibits ranging from classic to modern. It is a very pleasant space to visit, whether you go alone, accompanied and even with your little ones, it is a place for children to acquire culture; It is very well done and has excellent lighting.
There is a very complete cafeteria with a relatively extensive menu, on one of the floors.
It has varied accesses (stairs and elevators) impeccable and very complete bathrooms. There is an activity area for parents and children and it has a souvenir shop on the first floor, on the left side of the entrance.
There is only one paid shipment, but it's worth a look to see.
Discriminatory charging policy whereby "International Visitors" subsidise New Zealander visitors at the rate of 20 dollars per adult kept me away. Same at Auckland museum. Member of staff in reception said " New Zealand is not a rich country, and New Zealanders pay tax" . I thought about the hundreds of dollars tax visitors pay on everything.
Great place for some interesting art. The architecture is really good too
Excellent building with many aspects and spaces and various pieces of art of various quality.
Good experiences needs more signage that coffee purchased inside is not allowed inside the gallery.
great, worth a visit but don't park at rip off wilson parking across the road, $20 for 1.5 hrs !!
Get along and see the art or just sit in the cafe. I take my children there as they always seem to have something to on for them to interact with.
One of the best exhibition of Japanese art I've seen
Let's start it's a free museum. It is an old and new modern building in one. There are nice exhibitions and there is a play corner for children. Worth a visit.
It is not nice that you need to pay separately to havr access to the whole museum :(
Fabulous place. Exhibitions great. Coffee shop is excellent but needs gluten free soy milk
18Nov16 What's not to love about this city asset? Perhaps the slippery entrance courtyard when it's raining? But everything else !
Amazing place, great people helping you and beautiful and meaningful art!
Such an excellent resource and taonga. Love to visit this amazing gallery every time I come to Auckland. Needs more funding support to maintain and develop their amazing programme. Fabulous staff. He rawe!
Absolutely wicked. Just unsure of what people consider "art" these days
Bodied the Goldie exhonot with 9ntrrnati9nal visitors. It did not disappoint
Auckland Art Gallery has a most fascinating display of paintings especially Paintings depicting New Zealand's Heritage and Maori Culture.
It is most illuminating to learn the History of New Zealand through paintings.
The Art Gallery in centrally located near Auckland Central Business District (CBD) and entry is free.
Auckland Art Gallery Toi o T maki is a "must visit" destination in Auckland.
Awesome place to chill out and look at art from all around the world
Always lots to explore for hours on end, with free (Aucklanders I think) and ticketed exhibitions.
Most of the rooms are very simple exhibitions. There were only a couple of rooms that really blew me away ... I think the cost-benefit ratio is not adequate (only foreigners are charged, not locals).
Everything is great..the lights, the building it self, the gardens around
Insipiring place with constantly changing exhibitions. Also the building itself is spectacular.
Had a fabulous time there. My Grandson loved the Obliteration Room.
I had a great time. The only thing that bothered me was that the tourists have to pay like 30 dollars now its way to much.
I understand is because a new law but still is stupid considering that you are going to loose some potencial visitors for that.
I always make time to go to the Auckland art gallery when I'm in town. Lots of quality exhibitions and free entry to New Zealanders
It's a great place where you can learn about art tours are offered which you might to take or if you're from another country you can go here to be a bit familiar
Do not miss! Right now they have an absolutely magnificent exhibit. These are the portraits of Maoris.
Entrance to the gallery is free, which is very appreciable
Great gallery with some very interesting exhibits. Very relaxed atmosphere through. Everyone working there was very friendly. Added bonus that it is free for Auckland residents. Would fully recommend visiting during your time in Auckland.
Wonderful exhibition and extremely entertaining Art After Hours -
No doubt it is very good for those who know all about modern art but for ordinary people like me, much of it was not really art.
In 100 years' time, in my opinion, nobody will be displaying much, if any, of the more modern photograpic material that is currently on display at the Auckland Art Gallery - purportedly as "Art"
Fantastic art gallery is a beautiful historic building. Definitely check it out if you're in Auckland.
It was quite boring and there isn't much hands on things to do
Lovely free art gallery with some really interesting and thought provoking works. Worth a visit even if you aren't particularly interested in art.
Impressive building design. Worthwhile to visit on a rainy day.
Wonderful civic amenity. Beautifully crafted building with some fine art works. Do visit the Cafe too.
Very interesting gallery of maori art and at my time a very eye opening collection of the gorilla girls (check them out you wont believe the numbers). If you are a traveler with a working visa you get a free entrance.
Can recommend heavily
Wonderful public art gallery with special galleries that require you to purchase tickets. Check the website for free gallery tour times; the guides are volunteer docents who love art and having people to talk to art with. Also check out the gift shop, if only for the cheeky shopping bags.
Excellent exhibition on Frances Hodgkins that gave a thorough overview of her work over her life time and it's place in contemporary art.
McCahon fabulous, great Louise Henderson exhibition but suffering (unlike the McCahon) from being exhibited in corridors
I loved this art gallery. So many different styles and mediums. I especially enjoyed the interactive exhibit. There are good amenities.
They've put forward an amazing collection. I will be back.
I love the gallery of Modern Art. The Manifestos exhibition was a puzzle - sound and sight overload and the printed handout didn't explain anything.
Our hotel told us to visit the art galleries in the city, especially indigenous Maori art, we both visited the gallery in the morning.
We can not speak English. Fortunately, there was a young male staff speaking Japanese.
I am very thankful that he understood us.
He was very polite for us.
The entrance fee for the gallery is cheap.
Great space and cafe. I always feel a tad underwhelmed by exhibitions here as I'm used to European exhibitions. However very pleasant and well worth a look at what's going on. We went to the nude exhibition last summer it was nice. I went last time with school trip and the kids card board city collaboration affair was fab.
