Great to experience the artworks old and new, and also have an interactive exhibit for kids.
If you're looking for a showcase of New Zealand artists, and ALMOST world famous contemporary artists...this is your place! There's even a cafe, which was my favourite bit.
Nice people but poor signage, didn't know where I could and couldn't go, guards on every door, didn't end up seeing any art
The building itself has a stunning architecture. Liked it!
I'm proud of Auckland Art Gallery. The extensive range of local and international art is punching above their weight constantly.
Make sure you visit the cafe and try something containing Fix and Fogg peanut butter - I did and loved it!
Had lunch with vistors to Akl. Great service. Great range and quality of food. Small but tasty coffees. Good experience overall.
This gallery used to be free but now it's only free for residents. I am happy that I didn't pay because I had seen everything on the ground floor before back in September. I enjoyed the exhibition of Yayoi Kusama but thought more of her work would have been nice. It is beautiful gallery but perhaps entry should be on a note donation as not everyone can afford $20.
Brilliant gallery with some wonderful New Zealand artworks. There's a nice cafe and a free cloakroom. It's situated in a pleasant park with more sculpture to enjoy there too
Had an enjoyable wonder through the gallery a few months back, pleasant gallery with good facilities.
Big building, big space but the exhibit are mostly modern arts, hard to understand.
The architecture of the place is very good, it is a very important place to visit in Auckland, if you are a student of some schools consult if you have free pass
Great Art Gallery, particularly Goldie.
Recommend.
Interesting New Zealand art exhibition on four flours where you can easily spend a few hours. There is an interactive creative art section and a nice cafe.
I have visited by myself, with family and with my students. There is something for everybody as the art is from many different genres and periods in this large municipal art gallery. There are static collections and guest collections and there is usually an interactive exhibit suitable for all ages, often using the public's input to make an installation artwork.
If you plan to bring a class, it's a good idea to call beforehand to check they aren't swamped, but a casual drop-in with a handful of students should be alright.
Entry is free to local residents, and that includes international students with student ID cards - you get a wristband on entry. (Sometimes there's a special exhibition requiring paid entry to that part of the gallery only.) Cameras are okay unless they say otherwise. You can leave baggage and valuables safely at the desk, and there is a cafe upstairs, which I'm not going to review because I haven't used it recently.
Overall, Auckland Art Gallery is a cultural taonga (treasure) that art/sculpture fans will love.
Beautiful Galleries , great exhibitions, from the classical to modern art. All in an amazing and interesting building. It's free entry, all ages friendly, and they even have free tours that are not too long, You just need to read about toure times on the website.
Best place to start learning about nz culture. They have amazing pieces of art from the renaissance to the contemporary times.
Very interesting place, changes with relative frequency and the exhibits are always good. I hear that the south American one that is happening now is a MUST SEE!
A beautiful art gallery with several exhibits for many tastes. When I visited, there were exhibits on classical, modern, and feminist art, Maori portraits, New Zealand depictions, and even an interactive exhibit where visitors could put a page of colorful stickers wherever they wanted in an originally white room. It was a great way to spend half of a rainy day.
I don't go very often but love the fact there is something different every time I've been
The gallery is the best in New Zealand. We make an effort to go every time we go to Auckland
Beautiful exhibits from modern to classical. Great way to spend a Saturday afternoon before seeing a show downtown.
Great place for a visit, bit too much of the same thing in some parts. I would recommend multiple brief visits than trying to do everything in one go.
It turns into market every Sunday morning which offer a complete daily stuff such as vegetables, fruit, fish and many things with cheap prize
The building is impressive. The guide is highly recommended
Fantastic exhibitions especially NZ art contemporary and historical. Great building .
nah aye they had a disco installation and it really took me back to my childhood. big respect. also it was free yeehaw but only if youre a citizen
Very nice new zealand art especially the maori ones
One of the best art museums anywhere in the world. The most memorable exhibit for me is the gallery focused on beautiful modern design. It evokes a sense of the pinnacle of minimalism as a lover of modern architecture and design. The other exhibits were just as fantastic with pieces from a wide range of local and internationally recognized artists. The museum and special exhibits are even available for FREE for locals and foreign visitors alike during Auckland Anniversary Day. Staff are all super friendly and willing to help at every corner.
Fantastic building chatty attendants great historical paintings of early NZ and maori portraits. The Auckland Art Gallery experience.
Never been here before but glad I did come. Some nice pieces of Artwork at the Auckland Art Gallery both classical and modern. A very cool space as well with a mixture of modern and classical architecture.
A jewel in the Crown for Auckland. Loved watching the children being creative.
I entered as an uncultured swine and left as a sophisticated tuxedo-wearing, pipe-smoking, novel-wielding intellectual ready to present my first lecture at auckland uni.
Building is historic with some nice modern features. Free to go to, with the occasional pay to see exhibition. Good art work on display
Bit disappointed, hoping for more paintings to review. Facility clean and staff very polite plus helpful with any inquiry.
Small gallery with less Maori art than I expected. The photos of the old Maori face tattoos are amazing. Also has a great little cafe that you can sit out on the balcony and take in beautiful New Zealand weather.
A fantastic gallery but odd that tourists are charged admission even if only to eat at the cafe?!
Such a lovely place for kids. So good to see our taxes being used. My son loves it and he is 4. They have a cardboard construction, they do change occassionally though
Wonderful art gallery - I just checking checked out the free section (free for NZ citizens) and that kept me occupied for at least three hours. Some stunning NZ art works and lots of M ori and Pacifika contributions - an excellent cross section of cultural influences in NZ art. Absolutely recommend.
I took my 5yo granddaughter to the animated short films that AUT students put together. Great that it was 30mins max as she was ready to rock out of there but had her captivated for the most of it. Thank you AUT & Akld Art Gallery Toi o T maki.
Very little gallery for quite expensive price (20$ for non NZ residents).
I learnt almost nothing about the Maori art, and the european collection is very limited.
This is a great gallery, housing a week curated and considered collection. The space and recent revamp of the internal structure makes it a joy to visit.
Not a fan of abstract art but 18th something century paintings and Maori portraits were amazingly realistic
Good place to spin time in there. But I don t understand the art.
Fiest time being there and seeing all the amazing artist and their work
Inter art tour highly recommended! There's also a book stand that contains a lot of questions to make the picture fun, and there's a question next to the work that makes me feel healed. It's urgent to introduce this in Korea. You can eat and keep watching!
Great for the toddler and parent to run around, water feature outside for a bit of fun and the indoor space very useful for the rainy day. The shop is pretty cool too!
Excellent gallery downtown. Exhibits change so you will be surprised each time you visit. Good presentation spaces, huge restrooms, modest fee
Enjoyed the exhibitions but the whole experience was ruined by a member of staff who was exceptionally rude. It was 5 minutes prior to closing time and we were seated waiting for my friend who was purchasing something in the gallery shop. The woman asked why we were sitting there it was closing time and told us where the doors were in the most arrogant fashion. Very odd.
One of the most supplied museums of MAORI works in the world
What a gallery! I loved the architectural ceiling and the colors and molding in each room had great character. It was so refreshing to see a museum with such a dedication to promotion NZ artists. And the Guerilla Girls exhibit was epic!
An excellent permanent collection, beautiful building, great cafe, good gift shop...
A nice free thing to do in Auckland. Staff are suuuuper friendly!
Was a pleasant way to kill a few spare hours in the CBD in the afternoon. No major displays on at the time though, so was a little bit ho-hum. Will definitely go back for the next big art event though.
Nice and interesting art, the building itself is also amazing
A good place to learn and study Abt New Zealand arts.
