I had two bonded dogs that I had to surrender to the Animal Humane NM, since I already had 4 dogs at home. The 2 dogs were from a friend of mine who had recently passed away, and I had no luck finding a home for them through close networks. So my last resort was to take them to the Animal Humane. It wasn't a guarantee that they'd keep both dogs together, but they said that they would try to and if they were separated they would make sure they'd go into good homes. Long story short, I found out the next day someone adopted them together. So grateful for this place!

BEWARE: A Surrender Turned Tragic

BEWARE: A Surrender Turned Tragic
A few weeks ago I brought in a one year old dog to Animal Humane we had rescued from a local shelter. The dog had been through basic obedience training, was healthy and not aggressive. We were told that their behavior specialists would help him get over his shyness around new people and they would find him a new home.
Unfortunately after a few days in their care they put the dog down before any training had even begun. Apparently it was easier (less costly?) to kill the dog rather than spend he time training him. Had I known of their intentions or had they called me, I would have kept the puppy and found him a home on my own.
Before you surrender an animal to Animal Humane be aware that it could be killed rather put up for adoption. They do not even deserve one star!
Animal Humane is far from a "humane" facility.

Staff there is very rude, walked In this evening at 5:10pm to just be told they closed early due to the "wheather". He walked in right In front of us and let the door slam on my daughter. Then turned us away from just viewing the dogs. You all wonder why your kennels are full

If I could give this place 0 stars I would. I waited so long throughout the entire process. My long time family pet just passed and I found the sweetest dog to come home with me. I have a family and home to take an adopted dog, but they still refused to let me take him home. This was a personal issue and the manger needs to work more professionally. Rude people I don't recommend this place, you will leave disappointed!

About a year ago, my family adopted a Brown lab pit bull mix. She was very shy and was scared. She was turned in from her family she had before with a boy dog. My daughter, lets call her R, wanted to get her. We got her because our dog , prince, was a full lab with bad anxiety. About 3 months later from the day we adopted her, she was bright eye and bushy tail, ready to play and jump on your bed! Shes the sweetest female dog we ever had. I'm so glad that we got Nikki. Thank you to everyone who help with this adoption.

I recently adopted a dog from AHNM. They care for their animals like no one else. You can view potential pets online and they offer Training classes as well.
The low cost clinic is also top.
They are always open to donations to keep the animal Care at a high level.

The old blonde lady who sits at the front desk is quite rude. As soon as you walk in the door, personal judgement profiling begins giving no chance for good families to adopt and hurts the animals in need. Our skin must not have been the right color of white, and we weren't wearing our formal wear proving we're capable of supporting a pet. I submitted a complaint, and still no one has taken the time to respond to my concerns. I don't recommend this facility if you are serious in adopting a pet in need. They are hurting their animals chances of settling into a good home.

My experience at Animal Humane has been nothing but positive over the course of my time in Albuquerque. 3 of the 4 pets my family has adopted have been from here and each one was an incredible pet that I'll never forget. I currently have 2 dogs both from the main location and the behavior staff has been incredibly supportive in helping to housebreak and train both of them.

Animal Humane runs a beautiful facility providing veterinary, boarding, and adoption services. When we decided to grow our family with a new dog friend we choose to use them. Given the reality of COVID restrictions we did not go to tour the available animals, but instead considered the availables from their website and then scheduled a time to go and visit the one we were attracted to. This worked well, as they are careful to remove animals from the website once someone has chosen to adopt.
The actual adoption process was fast and they have it set up to be entirely contactless. We were in and out in 45 minutes.
Our Razi (was Tommy) gives it two paws up!

I'm giving them 3 stars because I do respect what they do, but on the flip side I haven't had great experiences with them. I've captured (if that's an appropriate term) a stray dog and stray cat. Both times that I've given them to the Humane Society, they give me an attitude as if I'm surrendering them as MY OWN pets. Now I know why people just dump their unwanted pets on the streets, they don't want the guilt trip.

I am a first time pet owner, but I've always been determined to have my own puppy. I went in several times to look at certain dogs, but it wasn't until my fourth visit that I met "Amos", a little black lab mix with a curled tail. He was perfect. I took him home the next day. I can't begin to describe how thankful I am for him and the humane society employees. They helped me find my companion. He is always with me, he checks on me in the shower, and guards the window by my bed (much to my chagrin). I have my forever dog and the best companion I could have ever asked for. His new name is Laz short for Lazaretto, and everyone that meets him loves him entirely. Thank you for my forever dog. I highly recommend coming here to find the perfect animal for you.

I went to adopt a cat after I had lost my dog a few weeks prior. I saw a cat online that I wanted and I went in to meet him and try to adopt him. I had permission from my apartment complex, a steady income and all the necessary paperwork and funds to do so. The man who manages the cat part of the campus was rude and condescending. Treated me like I wasn t intelligent enough to take care of a cat and came up with EVERY reason in the book I couldn t have the cat. All of which boiled down to him basically saying I was too young (which I wasn t). However since I m just as stubborn I kept persisting and finally got to adopt my precious furr baby 3 DAYS after I initially went in to adopt him. I have had many friends have the same experience with this place. My cat is thriving and healthy as ever. I will never go back to this place because of how poorly I was treated for trying to give my cat a forever home.

I feel like my sister and her family were treated unfairly. They went to adopt a dog and as soon as they walked into this place the girl (I believe her name is Jess) was very rude and negative towards them. She was saying that the dog was not good for the kids and other pets. My sister was heart broken and had her eyes on this dog for a while. We read his profile and it said he was great with other pets and great family dog. Yet she told her different that she was afraid of the the kids safty. My sister was gonna try to speak to someone else to see if something could be done about this to try to get this dog. Come to find they sold him. I feel like she was saving him for someone she knows. To me people should be able to adopt a dog if they are willing to give them a good home. They are not very professional in my eyes.

Love Animal Humane New Mexico! We adopted our second dog here.

The facilities are expansive and well maintained by great staff and volunteers; you can tell they really care about the animals. We had a dog already and had to do a few different meet-and-greets to find the right fit to co-exist with her, and the staff made the process very smooth for both the shelter dogs and our dog.

They really get a wide variety of breeds that come through, as well as all sorts of ages (from puppies to seniors). If you don't see something that seems like the right fit for you, keep checking back on their site; you'll definitely find someone.

I wish I could give them 10 stars! THEIR TRAINING CLASSES ARE THE BEST IN TOWN.
They are a great place to adopt, but I really want to highlight their training classes! OMG their trainers are SO SUPER DEDICATED to helping owners and their dogs. If you need background: their training philosophy focuses on positive training techniques, so no electric collars/choke collars/intimidation techniques here. I've adopted two puppies through the humane and I've taken both of them to the Sunday puppy playtimes. This is an AMAZING way to socialize your young puppy, even before they have full shots. Then I've sent my older dog through both puppy preschool and civilized canine classes. It was amazing to see the trainer specifically bring in extra helpers because some of the dogs in our civilized canine class had special needs for training. For instance, some were really shy, some were fearful of other dogs. They turned a group class into semi-individualized instruction and really focused on the specific needs of each dog! They also kept all of the dogs separate during the CC class b/c not all dogs are comfortable socializing. They really met each dog at their comfort level. Even though it's been a year since the last time I took a class, I still can contact the trainer and ask her a million questions. They just really love helping people and their dogs!!!! Finally, even if you didn't adopt through their center, they have a behavior helpline that anyone can call for advice. The humane really deserves kudos for being so committed to finding families for lost pets and then helping to troubleshoot some of the behavioral problems that can make it difficult for people to keep their pets.

I adopted a 2 year old Pitbull "Lady Bird" someone had adopted her before me and brought her back because she would go pottie in the house number 1&2 and she would also vomit in the house. She bite one of the first people that adopted her and this is what the shelter told me was the reason she was returned (she bite) shelter also told me that the reason she threw up was nerves getting adjusted to new place. I had "Lady Bird" 4 days before i had to return her. I would walk 20 minutes a day 4 or 5 times a day. She went to bathroom outside 1 time in 5 days. I would get done walking her and bring her back in and within 5 minutes she would pee in the floor. The last night she was here she threw up all over my couch. This dog has medical issue's and shelter must know this but they are still trying to adopt her out one more time. I feel the shelter was not completely honest with me so overall all this was not a good experience. I will not be going back to the shelter to adopt anymore pets and they tried to get me to adopt a cat while i was there the first time as well getting the dog. Not happy at all about this experience!!!

MY experience was very bad Animal humane They advertise low cost pet shots but first they want to do a complete physical of the pet and charge more money as well as another 30 for the shots plus license so on and so on they dont do anything for low income people at all and just like all the other vet's offices it's all about profit besides that when they get overcrowded with animals they just turn them over to the city to have them destroyed despite what they all say that they find all dogs good homes most of what they say is a lie.

My roommates and I were contemplating for a while since we moved here if we were going to adopt a dog. This place was the best place for us to find one. They categorize the dogs on their certain behaviors and that really helped out a lot. The people that work there are absolutely amazing and you can tell that they love their job. I would totally recommend this place if anyone is looking to adopt a doggo or cat. :)

I went in to see about adopting a dog. We found the cutest little boy. He has turned out to be the best dog I've owned. The staff was really friendly and knew which dogs I may be interested in. They set us up to visit with each one and gave us time to get acquainted. I will go back if I ever want to adopt another dog. Thanks so much for Max. Just love him.

Animal humane of NM is an amazing organization. We are extremely lucky to have them here. We recently adopted our new baby from them and we are so happy with everything. We went there twice to make sure we find a life long friend and the staff were super helpful and patience with us. They have a really good record and history of all their animals to make sure that you find a perfect match. Not to mention they treat their animals so well!

We adopted Maddox (renamed Mookie) who they 1st rescued from the street then rescued from the city shelter the 2nd time. The top left photo is from when they rescued him from the shelter. It broke my heart to look at that photo I cannot believe how beat up and thin he looked. The top right photo is from after he has been with them for a couple of months, they treated him so well that he looks like a different cat. The bottom two photos are from us. He is now the new king of the house who enjoys kisses <3 <3 <3.

Please adopt, volunteer, and/or donate to this amazing place <3.

My sister and I got our kitties here, incredibly clean and our babies were wonderfully socialized. Even when my little one brought ringworm into the house, they were prompt in notifying us and offered us free treatment for my boy.

They took in my Bailee (names Jaws by the staff) after being hit by a car, and instead of putting him down they treated him and now he is the perfect cat. It was obvious the staff loved him as many volunteers came to say goodbye after signing the paperwork.

I still always recommend this shelter for anyone who needs a companion.

Horrible! RUDE! The staff is entirely rude from the receptionist to the veterinarian. You definitely pay for what you get, low cost service with mistreatment. I waited 1.5 hours in the waiting room, just to drop off my pup and the staff were so dismissive/rude. To make matters worse, after the spay, they gave (and charged) for a cone that didn't fit and my dog was able to reach her wound site. I had to go to Petco to get a correct size. I wouldn't recommend this place. I would recommend Vetco for low income care because they are nicer and just seem to be more professional all around.

I agree with a previous commenter below: they are taking advantage of people with fixed incomes!
