Was able to walk around in a hour, went during a snow storm so there wasn't many people there. My toddler loved it. Only wish it was a little bigger.
Really nice visit today! There were curators at the moose, the fox, flying squirrels answered all our questions and more
My kids enjoyed their time here so much. We went later in the evening but unfortunately it was still to hot for the polar bears . We still had an awesome experience with the other animals
Great zoo!!! Enjoyed the numerous animals...well designed...
Great place to take the family!!! Small but enough to occupy the kids for a bit!!
The Zoo is awesome, plenty of parking, and nice gift shop. Some of the animals tend to shy away from the public and hide. The wolves, bears, and musk ox is a sight to see.
Beautiful zoo all the animals and grounds were very good. A very good visit . Highly recommend
Let me start off by saying the zoo it self was a great experience for me, my family and family friends. BUT, what ruined my ENTIRE day after exiting the zoo was the gift shops employee Sam, not sure if that even her name but, thats what she told me. Now i never write any reviews and have little complaints about certain establishments, but, this seriously has to get put out there before this happens to any other family.
Where do i begin.. from the moment i walked into the gift shop and greeted Sam, i got nothing but dirty looks and not one word back. I thought nothing of it, maybe she did not hear me, but the entire time she continuously kept giving me, my family and family friends dirty looks as we walked to look at the merchandise and I noticed it quickly and can Just feel her staring at us. My friends wife walks up and buys a stuffed animal for her son, and what shocked me was she THROWS the receipt at her !! My friend did not want to say anything so they walked out and so did my family. I walked up to the counter to look at the different flavors of jerky they had, and i hear her tapping her fingers on the counter so I look up and see her just staring me down! So i give her the jerky and continue to pay, I ask how her day is going, looks at me with a face of disgust and says GOOD the payment goes through and the most UNPROFESSIONAL and DISGUSTING behavior i had EVER witnessed from an employee at a family establishment, she TOSSES, yes TOSSES my card on the counter. Writing this and thinking about it just boils my blood, I couldn't believe what she has just done . After looking at her in disbelief she just stares back and expects me to just walk away. The most atrocious individual i have encountered with!! I am not sure if this was discrimination and i really hope not i seriously HOPE this was not discrimination we are a hispanic family, or even if she was having a bad day this is no excuse what so ever for an employee to act like this at a FAMILY establishment.
After asking for her name several times and her ignoring me i had to ask the employee at the admissions section. In all honesty i hope this employee gets TERMINATED from this place, she ruined my entire day and my friends as well, we had a great time and the kids loved the animals but when something like this happens which is totally uncalled for there has to be consequences for ones actions. I called the manager and i will be following up with the manager to make sure this doesn't happen to anyone else or their families after having a good day at the zoo. I am just in disbelief and really cant wrap my head around what i experienced today at the Alaska zoo gift shop.
Clean, easy layout, clear paths for wheelchairs and strollers
Very nice Zoo. Glad to see all the animals were either orphaned or injured. No animals were kept for the sake of entertainment. Prices were good, but you cannot use a zoo pass that works for other zoos here.
It was great. Did not want to leave. I will be back. Thank you for taking care of the animals.
We visit each time were in Anchorage. It is not as large as other zoos but I love how up and personal you can get with animals. They focus more on Alaskan and northern animals . Well worth the stop.
The enclosures are horrendous for the animals.
The bear enclosure is ridiculously small for three bears. There is no place for them to scratch theirselves, no place for them to get away from visitors, and no way for them to stimulate themselves. When I went there they were all swaying their heads, a sign of stress in captivity for bears. They have no plants, no place to play in the water (except for the tiny excuse of a creek barely running through their enclosure). Its sickening and sad to think that these bears have to spend the rest of their lives in this enclosure. I highly suggest going to the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center instead of this disgusting animal prison, where they actually care for their animals.
Very nice zoo. Clean and the animals seemed very well taken care for. And first time visiting was nice to see different animals as compared to the one I live near.
Loved this zoo! We got to see feeding time with the brown bears which was amazing! Animals seem very well taken care of and their enclosures are extremely nice!
A very nice walking Zoo. Unfortunately, some animal displays were unavailable. Not sure if it was the time of year or construction that caused it.
Decent for Alaska. Small. But my kids had a good time finished within a hour.
Small zoo, but very nice. Takes about 3 hours if you take your time.
We went here yesterday for our sons first birthday and we all loved it. I adore that it is a rescue/rehab zoo and they have informational plaques that tell you the story of each of the inhabitants. Great prices and amazing people!
Lack of maintenance and seek greater attractiveness
Small but that's ok. The zoo does not receive any public funding. Most of the animals there are rescues but a few have been snatched. Overall it was a good visit.
I love this zoo. I love animals. Most of the animals were resting. It was nice though. Not very much people there.
Nice selection of animals. Good coffee shop with reasonable prices...and Irish creme to boot!
Visited the Alaska Zoo while vacationing with our family. Spent $17 ($2 more than residents) and was disappointed with what we got for our money. The Wildlife Conservatory in Portage was the same price and was a better value for the money.
Best zoo in Alaska. Maybe the only one but still a lot of fun.
It was a lovely place! Animals are very well taking carr of.
We enjoyed the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center more than the zoo since it seemed like the animals had a bit more space and a bit more natural of an environment, but I respect that the zoo seems like it's mostly animals that were rescued; they frequently have signs posted with the origin stories of their animals.
Difficult to find animals using the map and signage. Lots of walking. Animals looked well cared for. We did have fun
Nice zoo exhibits were well kept and natural surroundings
The staff was so eager to answer my kids questions and make sure they enjoyed the animals and learned something
Finally found us some parking. I did expected more animals. A lot of the cages were empty with no animals to be found. But overall experience was good. The walk around was very tiring on my leg, but that just means I'm out of shape. My second time there and will continue going back.
I like the zoo. I think I was expecting a bit more, but it was still good.
Be sure to follow the provided map, you might miss some animals if you don't.
There are many animals, but unfortunately, no polar bears have been seen. It's too hot, so hide inside
Amazing to see the actual size of the animals in Alaska!!!!
I ve never been here but I look forward to going once they lift their ridiculous mask enforcement rule
Great experience for the family. Clear view of all the animals.
It was very cold and not alot to see. Most animals where out of sight?? Xould not even get a warm cup coffee.
They have a lot of different animals. It is spread out. I actually missed a bounch of exhibits and didn't realize it until we had left. Their gift shop is nice and clean. It is a great place to come and relax or bring children. It is good for groups or solo.
Wished could have seen the Polar bear who was asleep for over two hours. Sighting of the other animals was a wonderful experience
Small zoo with multiple construction projects going. A couple of new bear Cubs which were adorable playing outside. Not a great day to go probably since most are Arctic species and it was too hot for them! The snow leopards were down close to the gravel trying to chill off which was quite cool since they were so close.
It would be a disappointment if you have visited the San Diego zoo but for what it is it's very nice
Great to get the family together and spend an afternoon strolling around the zoo.
Anyways educational and the staff is great. I miss face painting for them. I always did a froggy on this woman's face and she was always the best model
Very great place to go with grandkids very informative about the types of animals they have there
Good place to bring kids, not many animals. Facilities are basic
Great for families, very natural looking, they really love the animals and focus on public education as well as animal rescue!
Lovely walk among bears, camels, eagles, wolverine, tigers, musk ox, seals, moose and more. Great way to spend a sunny afternoon.
Love the zoo! I am local but enjoy taking the kids frequently as we see different things each time.
Honestly when I first went I thought it was going to be kind of lame but this zoo actually has a really nice layout. I do wish they had a little more animals to show but for the size of the city it makes sense. Will definitely go again
Nice place and while not big the local animals and helpful volunteers make for a pleasant day.
Very Awesome! I was so happy to see the polar bears together finally! Watching the Grizzlies was amazing. Very clean, very kid friendly, and they take AMAZING care of their animals.
Bueatiful holiday lighting throughout the Zoo. Snow leopards seemed to enjoy the cold
Very nice zoo. Exhibits are laid out with trees between them, giving it a very wooded atmosphere. A great selection of animals on exhibit.
So great, I heard it used to be bigger. Sorry I missed that, but amazing now
Neat, clean, easy access and animals are well cared for!!
Great Familly friendly zoo featuring rescued Alaska wildlife.
It is an amazing zoo that is like walking through the woods and enjoying the animals as we approach their home.
Small zoo offering close encounters with Alaskan wildlife.
The animals know who you are and come out to see ya. I think it's very cool.
This place really needs to get cleaned up. The paint was chipping, bathrooms were gross (two out of the three were working), inside tanks were filthy and I personally thought some of the animals were far apart
Excellent place to learn about the animals of alaska and the staff is really friendly , love the petting zoo also
This zoo is a medium sized, somewhat confusing maze of trails, but we managed to see all of the animals, and we were not disappointed. We watched and listened to a group of wolves howling. We watched the grizzlies eating. We watched the dall sheep eat up close. We saw many kinds of raptors, eagles, ravens. We saw musk oxen, coyotes, moose, porcupines, seals and many other animals! Many of the animals are rescues that can no longer live in the wild. Definitely consider visiting this zoo. But they look healthy though
The Zoo lights are awesome. Beautiful to experience!!!
Love that the zoo is exactly like I remember as a kid .. in the middle of the forest surrounded by animals. Love me some ools
Plenty of mammals and birds, but be aware there aren't reptiles or amphibians. Totally worth $15 admission. Great trip for both kids and adults!
this is tough for me. i think i'm growing less fond of zoos these days. i found myself fairly depressed while walking the grounds as i noticed the very small, dirty enclosures, with most of the animals huddled in the corners of their enclosures or anxiously pacing the perimeters. they didn't necessarily look neglected or in major distress, but i definitely felt like my presence there wasn't exactly doing any good for these poor creatures. while i fully understand that most of these animals were born into captivity or were in some way injured and cannot survive in the wild, it's difficult to be able to justify putting them on display. still, it was pretty wonderful to get to see a snow leopard, polar bear and amur tiger up close. go early (9-10am) or in the evening, or you risk visiting when they're all sleeping.
