My husband was admitted to ARMC thru the ER on Sept 9, 2014 for shortness of breath and pneumonia due to his metastatic esophageal cancer. He was in good spirits and was fighting this terrible disease, knowing full well that he was failing. He was able to talk, eat, laugh, etc. ALL of the nurses and doctors that came to see and treat him went above and beyond their calling in order to care for him and make him comfortable. One week after he was admitted the results of the CT scan came back and his cancer had spread to his liver as well as his spine and hips, so his oncologist Dr. Ergul (whom I have THE HIGHEST regard for) ordered radiation treatment for his back and hips in order to get him stronger so he could withstand more treatment for the cancer.
That evening, the hospitalist DR. CAMPBELL came in to see him, asking me questions about him, telling me that she knew nothing about his case. After a few minutes of talking to me, she went over to my husband, put her stethoscope on his chest (his lungs were clear and heart was strong), stood back and said that she knew all about cancer because her daughter had died of cancer. Started talking about hospice care and had I ever heard of DR. KEVORKIAN!!!!! That's when I stood up and said "I'm going to stop you right there, I'm from Michigan and know Dr. Kevorkian very well." She continued to talk about hospice and that she was going to talk to Dr. Ergul to see if they could get on the same page. Then she dropped another bombshell: in FRONT of my husband she said that her assessment was that he had LESS THAN 6 MONTHS TO LIVE!!!!! (I left orders with the nurses that Dr. Campbell was NEVER to be near my husband again.)
THAT IS WHEN MY HUSBAND LOST HIS WILL TO KEEP FIGHTING BECAUSE HE QUIT TALKING AND EATING THE VERY NEXT DAY. HE PASSED AWAY 4 DAYS LATER.
I would have rated my husband's experience at ARMC 5 stars, but our experience with Dr. Campbell lowered it to 4.
