I live in Madrid airport only for coincidences to take, so I lived it from the inside. Usually at t4 and I must say that despite being immense it is well structured. A flaw is the lack of space for the gate rows that are always found in the corridor where people have to walk. It's a pity because there would be space to organize things better, but this affects all airports a bit. For the rest, everything is fine, impeccable cleaning of the bathrooms and if you're lucky enough to have the connection in the same terminal you're lucky, because you'll have to walk only twenty minutes. Altri Among other terminals it becomes difficult if you have small connections

This is a HUGE! Airport. Be aware of where you are landing and how much time you have. The airport is beautiful but you will find yourself dropped into a duty free area that seems to have no exit. Recognize this airport has some of the least obvious signage and a Satellite terminal that may take you 30-40 minutes to get to. Designed spectacularly and a pleasure to wander through when you do not have to rush to make a connection.

Beautiful modern and large. You are just outside the center of Madrid. 15 to 20 minutes by car. Plenty of transport options. There are shuttles to and from the airport, 24 hours a day. Also taxis and metro.

Very clean and tidy, we went through this place at the beginning of August and there were many open places narrowing down the options, in general we saw few people inside the enclosure.

The airport is surprisingly outdated, but not very busy. The security needs to be updated along with the check in. But overall an OK airport.

Worst airport I have been. Staff doesn t speak English. I was stopped 3 times and harassed from security for my passport. They asked for a visa to travel from Greece to the Uk. They asked for residency cards, driving license and my tickets without being able to explain to me in English what is going on. This harassment happened 3 times before boarding. I wasn t sure I would fly. On top of that no signs, little communication and friendliness. Hospitality and communication was very poor in Madrid and the international airport was not excluded. Not to mention the extremely expensive food (had 1 portion of frozen calamares for 16.5 Euros). Will not visit again. They take tourism for granted.

By necessity I have spent dozens of times at this airport and I do not like it. The bathrooms lack cleanliness. I have found myself in bars, cafes and shops with a bravado that I have not found in any other airport in the world and that makes me feel uncomfortable. The level of service I think is not in line with what an international traveler expects. Few employees speak English. I would say if you can avoid around here, avoid it.

Queues of 40 minutes just to buy a ticket for the metro, no staff to help anyone and several ticket machines out of order.. this is at 10.16am. What a joke of a public transport system for an international airport in a capital city.. get your sh** together Madrid.

Certainly a spacious airport, it is extremely spread out. Taxiing takes ages. It is very clean and pristine; however, be prepared to have to navigate long distances if you are flying in or out of Terminal 4 the International Airport. Sadly, it doesn't appear to be very populated these days. I've only had one layover, but not due to any fault of the airport. The only strange aspect of the airport are the arrows. They point down, when intending to lead you forward. Sometimes, thus, potentially confusing you into thinking you ought to go downstairs instead of continue down the hallway. Some signage issues. Overall, a great airport.

I visited many European airports and I think this one is the worst!

- Staff don't speak English! Only Spanish
- My access to VIP lounge was declined though I was eligible because the staff can't understand what I saying
- I had a coffee with a croissant and I had to pay 10 euros
- reaching the airport from the city is very bad. I had to pay 30 euros for taxi

In 30 years of traveling in Europe, South America ...

In 30 years of traveling in Europe, South America and the US, we have never had an experience as bad as that of Barajas Airport. The design of the airport obviously made sense to someone but that person did not have the traveling public in mind. It may have been designed/renovated/expanded with the convenience of airlines, baggage handlers or buses.

You can spend hours getting from one poorly-signed area to another. The centralization of baggage reclaim may be the worst design mistake (from a passenger point of view) ever made on planet earth. Allow hours and hours to change planes especially if you are traveling on two different airlines. If you are just changing within one airline then it is only a minor headache. If you are going (for example from Iberia to Norwegian) than it's more like your worst airport nightmare.

A standard has been set and a tone sanctioned/enabled such that bus drivers, information personnel, even food servers do not feel obliged to cheerfully serve the public. The stupendously inconvenient layout of the airport is reflected in a general disregard for the traveling public.

Avoid this airport if you have a choice. Sadly, Iberia is an especially good airline but is saddled with a Madrid hub.

Large, well signposted, clean and easily accessible from any point of the city. It has many stores inside with typical products of Spain. I get the impression that there is not such a good price for the products since I bought things that cost me cheaper. Free WiFi but not fast.

Terminal 4 and 4s are very modern compared to terminals 1,2 and 3. If you transit in Madrid you ll get a good impression while using terminal 4 ! I agree with the others reviewer's, security is weak in this airport !

Personally, the signage does not seem to me, it seems designed to lose people; As for the staff, some are very friendly, but not all and it seems that if you ask them something they are not really willing to help you.

The worst airport I have ever been to. There are no signs for car rental returns so I had drive around until I finally stumbled upon it. Four seperate terminals makes it confusing and difficult to get around. Been here twice & hope I NEVER have to come back.

Recommendation: better go early. Terminal 4 is very big.
For international flights it is usually necessary to use an internal train to get to the boarding gate and all distances, both outside and inside, after control, are very long. Better to go with the margin. Anyway, once inside you will find from Zara, through Massimo Dutti and even a McDonald's ...

Huge and one of the most confusing airport in europe! There is a tragic jams and delays for the bus between the terminals even at the late evening. Confusing signs and half of the stuff don't always know what is where. Took me 15 minutes to get out from the terminal!

This airport just sucks, especially if you consider that it is the airport of spains capital. unfortunately i had/have to visit this crapport many times for stop over and transfers in the past and future. to be fair and only to be fair i rate it 2 of 5 stars although i feel like giving it a zero. why? go get yourself a picture.

Enormous airport. Depending on the airlines and flight you will arrive and departure on different terminals. I strongly recommend if possible, staying at one of the nearby hotels a day before travelling, Ibis is pretty good.

Incredibly crowded, specially if you travel on the economy class of Iberia. And yes, you are probably going to have a hard time if you don't speak spanish. Still, insist if you need any sort of help, sometimes there are fellow travellers that might help you with that!

Our wonderful weekend spoilt when we arrived home to find out our hold baggage had the brass padlock ripped off damaging the zip and the contents of the case rummaged through, they even put the padlock in an outer pocket of the case. I have heard before about any airport, if you book in early for your flight, it gives baggage handlers time to interfere with the bags.

Huge, confusing and overflowing. Regular Saturday but crazy queues, uninformed staff and left to wait for hours queueing at gate. Gate staff unaware of obvious delay (late arrival of aircraft). Very little support for those with health conditions. Shrug, "too bad". High prices. Toilets with one, weak dryer. Terrible.

Very confusing and very badly orginsed airport (terminals 1-3). The nearest airport map is after 15min walk. Very limited waiting areas resulting in overcrowding and chaos at some gates. Just one restaurant, some small shops and cafes but scattered all over the place. Many missing floor slabs, some are replaced by bare concrete. It looks like one in a 3rd world country. However, the toilets were clean and smelling nice, the boarding went fast and without problem and we took off on time.

Very clean airport with easy to navigate signs. Very clean amenities. Waiting areas could be a little larger for popular flights so we don't have to sit on the floor but that's part of international travel so not too big of a problem

This airport is incredibly too long and large. It could be comparable to getting lost int he Mall of America or maybe getting lost in the Upside Down in Stranger Things. There are just escalators that lead to random places and a sign that says "Terminal 1 88 minutes away" while you get on a train that apparently takes you further away before you get closer. You know the original WIlly Wonka and the choclate factory? This was their inspiration. It's loud, confusing, and there are short workers running around singing all the time. But nothing is candy, just hard cold seating and too bright of a place really. Good luck getting to your connecting flight.

Terrible! Ignorant employees, confused to know the gate (have to always look at the display of landings and takeoffs), there is free Wi-Fi and in T4 there is no place to charge cell phones.

It's suppossed that in COVID-19 situation facilities should be well cleaned and desinfected, not the seats on Gates door C 35,36,38..I got pictures that shows how dirty they are...please pay attention to our safe travels..

Worst airport experience!

Worst airport experience!

The airport is spacious, confusing and poorly organized.
The employees do not feel responsible for the passengers and react unfriendly to questions. Communication is difficult because the airport speaks almost exclusively Spanish. We received a lot of wrong statements on our questions and were misdirected several times, which even led to missing our flight !!
There are only a few scoreboards that show the gate numbers very late.
All in all a very unpleasant stay!
We will definitely not fly to this airport again.

Language is a barrier sometimes as most of the staff speaks only Spanish!
Clean and contemporary airport with modern styling and ambience. Public lounge areas have good seating. Neat and clean surroundings.
Bit congested at times specially during rush rours. Bagguage claim and immigration takes some time!

One of the worst airports I've ever seen. Extremely long and winding routes both for the baggage claim on arrival and for boarding on departure. Chaotic waiting areas and almost without seats. After leaving the subway we also had to pay 3 each to enter the airport as an additional fee. Unknown motivation. Really bad !!!

Cheating on tax-refund. I was at T4 and asked information desk about GlobalBlue counter. They directed me to GlobalExchange which insisted a poor exchange rate for tax refund, making us lost c.25% of our purchases (c.eur50)

Shame on such behaviour.

I had subsequently checked and this happended to quite a number of Chinese tourists. Shame for the racialism.

This airport is so convenient to the city center of Madrid, a thirty minute metro ride for around 5eu. It literally took one minute to get through customs when we arrived and five minutes to get through security when we were leaving. I'd give this airport five stars but there is zero vegan food except fries.

Inconsequentially priced food. Bought a bottle of water for at least 3 at Starbucks , nearby vending machine sells same size bottle for about 1,50. Doesn't make sense, pricing should be the same within airport. Also we came from Havana where we already went through security, transferring to flight to London we had to go to security again, we didn't leave the airport, so I don't see the logic of this. Check-in procedure was super unorganized on in and outbound flights. i am not sure if this falls under the responsibility of the airline or airport. There were 3 or 4 queues cordoned but no signs saying which boarding group should be in which queue. This resulted in chaos when boarding started. Logically Boarding Group 1 was asked to board first, however all were dispersed at the gate. This could have been prevented easily by putting up signs at the gate, Boarding Group 1, queue 1 etc. etc. Our return flight was delayed by 3 hours, due to air traffic control in France, fair enough but no announcements were made and the flight get on getting postponed. This baffled me, why leave people in mystery. The screens mentioned the delays but that's not enough for a delay this long. Would have given one star, but one extra because of nice layout of airport, very unclear which gate is where though.

Coming in from New York, heading to Morocco my layover was Madrid in the Barajas Airport. The airport itself was very desolate and confusing, also the employees seemed unapproachable, it was very difficult fingding anyone that could help you with directions, your luggage or information. Maybe the airport was going through some kind of remodeling or construction at the moment but it felt like the employees ran as soon as they saw any tourist with a question.

Beautiful airport, many restaurants. My flight layover here for 2 hours, I had time to enjoy the Spanish Ham in the airport restaurant. The price of wine is so inexpensive even in Airport, and great quality. I decide Span will be my next Europe vacation destination.

The cleaning girls a 10 have everything impeccable and the security people lovely and very nice, good communication on the screens and a lot of breadth. One of the best airports in the world.

Lots of waiting, half hour to get off plane, long walk to baggage carasol, thenbhalf hour more before 3 bags came out and another half hour for rest. Nuclear signage to hotel pickups at end another long wait. Spent half of my one day in Madrid waiting, waiting.

The worst experience.

The worst experience.

My flight was 15 mins to departure but a staff didn t let me get into the shortcut in the check point.

I ve shown my ticket, but she still ignored my request but let others who are not rush to use the shortcut.

When I came to the staff after missing the flight, this women even laughed at me!

What a horrible staff!
