Single best theater in Dublin! Always showcasing great Irish talent. The Abbey also has particularly deep roots connected to Irish history; this was basically the theater that fought to help preserve Irish culture and arts during British Colonial rule. Highly recommend stopping by for a show when in Dublin!

A wonderful modern theatre staging a wide variety of performances. Every time I go here, I forget how small it is. There really are no bad seats in the Abbey. There is a bar upstairs serving a reasonable selection of drinks, though only two draught beers. Ticket prices are reasonable too. Find a show that appeals to you, and just go here.

It's not easy to just rate the theater itself without taking into account the piece we saw there. It's not the historic Abbey of the 1920s. The current building is from the 1980s, I would appreciate. It's not very pretentious or plush in the auditorium, but the acoustics are good for that. And the crew at the box office is Irish-friendly. The piece was sensational by the way ... that was not the location, but the author. It had on it. Shakespeare.

Beautiful. Our national theatre, right in the middle of the city centre. Lovely friendly staff (thank you in particular to Marie, front of house). Layout is fantastic with seating perfectly terraced for unobstructed views of the stage. Comfortable bar (check out those portraits) on the first floor. An absolute gem.

About Abbey Theatre

The Abbey Theatre: A National Treasure of Ireland

The Abbey Theatre is a national treasure of Ireland, and it has been entertaining audiences for over a century. Founded in 1904 by W.B. Yeats and Lady Gregory, the theatre has played an integral role in shaping Irish culture and identity.

Located in Dublin, the Abbey Theatre is renowned for its innovative productions that showcase the best of Irish theatre. The theatre's repertoire includes classic plays by Irish playwrights such as Samuel Beckett, Brian Friel, and Sean O'Casey as well as contemporary works from emerging writers.

One of the unique features of the Abbey Theatre is its commitment to promoting new talent. The theatre runs several programs that support emerging playwrights, directors, actors, and designers. These programs provide opportunities for young artists to develop their skills and gain exposure to audiences both at home and abroad.

Over the years, the Abbey Theatre has produced many landmark productions that have left an indelible mark on Irish culture. One such production was Sean O'Casey's "The Plough and The Stars," which caused controversy when it was first staged in 1926 due to its portrayal of events surrounding the Easter Rising.

Another notable production was Brian Friel's "Translations," which explored themes of language and identity against a backdrop of political turmoil in 19th-century Ireland. This play went on to become one of Friel's most celebrated works.

In recent years, the Abbey Theatre has continued to push boundaries with productions that tackle contemporary issues such as immigration, gender equality, mental health awareness among others . For example ,the play "Ulysses" adapted from James Joyce’s novel by Dermot Bolger ,was staged at abbey theater with an all-female cast .

Apart from producing plays ,the abbey theater also offers tours where visitors can learn about its rich history .There are also workshops available where participants can learn about various aspects involved in putting up a theatrical production .

In conclusion, the Abbey Theater remains one of Ireland’s most important cultural institutions .Its contribution towards shaping Irish identity through theater cannot be overstated .With its commitment towards nurturing new talent while still maintaining high standards ,it continues to be relevant even today .
