In my opinion the gardens are better than the palace. This is because the place was ransacked during the revolution and all the original furniture is gone. When going to the gardens, go when the fountains are on. It makes a difference. You should know that the line ups for the palace are insane. The only way to beat them is to get a timed entry. Museum or Paris pass will not do that. Since we has the pass, we went an hour before open.
