It's a tourist stop, no doubt, but it's also glorious in its scope. We went to Fort Baker (Coast Guard base) and hiked up from there. You can see the SF Bay from parts of the trail; we even saw a couple of whales from one point! Eventually we reached the Bridge---at that point we could have crossed it, but opted to go to the highest vantage point and get a view of the whole bay and Bridge.
