Though small, a trip across Sydney Harbour to the Taronga Zoo can be a really nice experience. My group purchased a ticket through the Fast Ferry, which included a two-day ferry pass. The ferry+zoo experience is great as it includes a primer in the form of a gondola ride up the hill, meaning the visit can be organized as a leisurely walk traversing down the hillside, ending back at the ferry pier nice touch. There are places to snack and hydrate throughout the zoo.

As a non-Aussie, I especially appreciated the opportunity to see and, in the case of the walkabout attraction, interact with the local fauna.
