We stopped at the official welcome centre on the way to Sonoma and we were surprised to find that it s actually a paid parking. Since we only wanted a picture of the bridge we stopped only for about 5 minutes and left. I would recommend you go early since the parking lot is quite small. There is a piece of the main span right next to the welcome centre with an elevated concrete slap. Picture was taken from there and it was a pretty good angle. Going back though we would definitely just pay the parking so we can walk closer to the bridge!
