While it's a bit away from the subway, the Bronx Zoo is certainly worth the trek. You'll find animals from all over in this huge grounds. I particularly love the rainforest-type exhibits, but I could easily enjoy myself walking around the monkey house or by the sea creatures. If you're lucky, you catch one of the peacocks walking around the zoo- they jump right out of their spaces!
