The Palace of Westminster also known as "The Parliament" is the place where the two chambers of the Parliament of the United Kingdom (the House of Lords and the House of Commons) meet. The palace, which is one of the four World Heritage Sites in the city of London, declared by UNESCO in 1987, it is located on the north bank of the River Thames, in the city of Westminster, near other government buildings in Whitehall. Castles as places of interest.
The palace initially served as a royal residence, but no monarch has lived in it since the 16th century. Most of the current structure dates back to the 19th century, when the palace was rebuilt after a fire in 1834, which destroyed most of the building. The architects responsible for the reconstruction of the palace were Sir Charles Barry and Augustus Pugin. The building is an example of the neo-Gothic style. One of the most notable features of the palace is the clock tower, another tourist attraction that houses the bell called Big Ben, a name incorrectly assigned to the tower clock.
The palace contains more than a thousand rooms, the most important being those corresponding to the Halls of the House of Lords and the House of Commons. The palace also includes meeting rooms, libraries, halls, dining rooms, bars and gyms. It is the place where important state ceremonies are held, of which the most important is the Parliament Opening Ceremony. The palace is closely associated with the two Chambers, as evidenced by the use of the word "Westminster" to refer to the "Parliament." Parliamentarians' offices are located in nearby buildings, such as the Portcullis House and the Norman Shaw Buildings.
