A World Class Zoo - What a change from the 1950's (I grew up a stone's throw away). Bring your camera. The zoo had undergone a complete revision which has occurred over time. Gone are the cages for lions and tigers. All are now in a more natural habitat. The zoo is divided into sections: Wild Asia, Africa, etc. In Wild Asia there is a 15-20 minute monorail ride that take you through isolated sections of the park. The ride is narrated and the open air cars enable you to see the animals from the safety of the monorail while stopping every so often to allow you to better see each exhibit. A few places have remained basically unchanged - like the Sea Lion exhibit and the Reptile House but for the most part, the zoo is a much better place for the animals and the visitors. Be aware - food is relatively expensive (as often is the case with zoos and museums where you are a "captive" audience (pun intended).
