The Palace of Westminster, often called the Houses of Parliament, is the seat of the Parliament of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. At Westminster Palace, the House of Commons holds the upper house - the House of Lords and the lower house - the House of Commons. The palace is located on the banks of the River Thames near government buildings on Whitehall Street.
