This place is making 2-3 million euro each day, you'd think they could put some air conditioning on, refill the soap and paper towels each day and keep the important exhibits open. Don't waste your time in the palace, just skip to the gardens. If you come on a fountain day and are required to pay the mandatory extra 7 euro for those, make sure you plan your visit around the times the fountains are on.

If you take the train from the city, make sure you purchase the correct ticket for Versailles and don't try to sneak on with your Paris metro ticket - there is a decent trap with the police enforcement right before the Versailles station designed to catch tourists screwing up their train ticket to the tune of 35 euro a piece.

I don't think I'd ever go again, but if I was dragged there by friends I'd stick to the free gardens, rent a bike for the day, pack a lunch, and just roam around until they finished the miserable tour inside.
