Camp Newaygo was the first overnight camp I ever went to. It was my first experience away from home (4 hours away to be exact) and I enjoyed it. I was in Tinuwen, the unit for incoming 8th graders. It's definitely rustic. Tinuwen is basically cabins on stilts without any walls, just screens. If you're a younger camper, you sleep in places that are less rustic, but as you get older, your living environment becomes more wilderness and nature oriented. So if you're an older camper (by the way, this is an all girls camp) that's maybe about 13-14 years old or older that doesn't like rustic environments or is not an outdoorsy person, don't register for this camp. I'm not really an outdoors kind of girl, so it was kind of overwhelming (especially the overnight tent trip in the woods, which every camper goes on) but I still rated it 5 stars because of everything else. The activities are great, and so are the counselors. The facilities are also really clean and well maintained. In my opinion, the food is okay. A lot of people say it's really good but I think it's average. Maybe I'm just spoiled with home cooking....? But the thing I really loved about camp was my friends. I became friends with basically everybody in my cabin. We became sisters. Yes, there were about 2-3 girls in my cabin that were sweet but a little strange (sometimes made me a bit uncomfortable) but that happens in every camp at every cabin. Overall, everyone was super nice and welcoming. If you like the outdoors, fun activities, animals (they have so many cute critters!), and meeting new friends who will become your camp sisters, go to this camp! It's worth it and you will have the time of your life!
