We are shocked to see this is a 5-Star Hotel . After researching Waikiki hotels for some time before choosing The Royal Hawaiian, we chose this hotel based on the overall great ratings from multiple sites. The check-in was nice and they brought us a bottle of champagne, but the actual property itself, rooms, and service are not what I would call upscale.

The rooms are small and remind me of a chain hotel vibe. No upscale finishes or decor. That s all fine, because you didn t come to Hawaii to sit in the room.

The reason for the low rating is the service. No one says hi or even acknowledges you when you come or go. The complimentary breakfast and happy hour are nothing to write home about. The pool is very limited in seating and hardly any are in the sun. There is no music or servers to bring you food or drink. A lot of the disappointment could have been ignored if there was any attentiveness to the guests or making sure we were taken care of while here.

I hate to be negative or even write bad reviews, but just really confused on how this can be a 5-star hotel or why other people have given them such great ratings.
